Paranormal Activity 3 Post-Release - Page 2

Stuff that deal with pacts with the devil (or whatever) sometimes hit me in a horror sweet spot.  It worked for me with PA3, but I remember it really hitting a nerve when it came to The Ring (Verbinski remake).

One of the elements I really liked about the remake was the mystery behind Samara's origins.  Naomi Watts' character delved into it and found vague hints of sinister rituals that Samara's parents must've participated in in order to have a child.  I think it was Martin Henderson's character that found an old box full of random objects.  One of the things in there that freaked me out back then was a sheet with Chinese characters.  It was just such a 'foreign' object to find in that box, it took me by surprise.

For whatever reason, the coven stuff in PA3 worked for me in a similar way.

I guess I just don't see this as crossing that line yet. There's still a lot left to the imagination at this point. So I definitely agree that they shouldn't push it much further, because it will totally stray into SAW territory.

Sequels in general overexplain shit and kill the true horror. You go home from 3 and you're like "Well, that's not gonna happen to me, I don't have some weird coven and no-male-children thing in my family." You go home from 1 and you freak out at every creak because the seeming randomness of it is still intact — it randomly picked Katie (as far as you know) and it could randomly pick you too.

I agree with all of this. I think the overexplanation really becomes a problem when it starts to go off in a direction that actively works against the established scariness. For me it's not just that by part 3 the threat is locked to a specific family, it's that the nature of the monster has changed. PA1 has this invisible uncontrollable entity that cannot be bargained with, that does what it wants, and takes what it wants. Now with PA3, it appears that certain humans can work together with the demon (in fact it almost seemed like coven granny had the demon in her thrall). That's just less scary. It's like they neutered poor Toby. Another thing, don't call your demon TOBY.

90% of it is a really well made horror movie with some undeniable scare sequences, but there is some classic bad decision making for sequels going on here (though at least it's not [Rec] 2 I guess).

I must say I am excited about the potential for this series. I like that they may be trending towards using up and coming directors for the future films. The Catfish guys brought some great performances out of the kids, based on their previous work with child actors.

I think this is as good as the other two. Again, there's a lot of tension and again the shock scenes are quite effective. It's really fun to look for early clues or guess when the entity will strike. When it does, it works. Loved the babysitter scene. Sure, it's only as scary as those GOTCHA youtube videos, but that's one kind of horror and they pull it off. I also didn't mind the new story revelations and although the end turned out to be The Other Last Exorcism, it fit. Naming the entity Toby sucked though.

Don't bother if you didn't like one of the others. This one is a near copy of the others.

As much as I have enjoyed these movies, there doesn't need to be anymore. We know why Toby has been haunting these two sisters. Sequels would be just more of the same. I like the idea that possessed Katie and Hunter are out there doing God know what. I just don't need to see it. Quit while your ahead.

Maybe, i wouldn't mind one last one. Just to wrap things up. Maybe somebody could save baby Hunter?

Toby got his male child. It is wrapped up.

They save Hunter by sending him back in time. He's adopted by the Thompson family. All the talk about acid and ether is bullshit. He really sees demons and lizards.

So your true sequel to PA2 is The Rum Diary.

Tune in next week when I somehow pull "Pam Halpert is Katie's long-lost twin sister and that's why she talked about seeing a ghost in this season's Halloween episode" out of my ass.

I can actually see Pam and Katie being sisters. They both have the sexy girl next door look down.
