MUCH ADO ABOUT JOSS WHEDON’S (SECRET?) MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

Joss Whedon did Shakespeare and didn't tell anyone!

Wait, they just completed principal photography? Isn't Whedon still balls-deep in The Avengers? Weird.

Still, I support his small, experimental, offbeat work over his attempts at gigantic mega-blockbusters. And doing Shakespeare? That's quite the left turn. Does this mean there might be THREE Whedon movies in 2012? Or is Cabin in the Woods supposed to arrive this year, finally? I've lost track.

I love that half the cast of Dollhouse is in there.

Yeah, part of me is thinking he should really be focusing his entire being on The Avengers right now.  Another part is just impressed that it's possible to complete an entire project with relatively well known people without the internet finding out.  Another part is going yay!  Alexis Denisof is in something!

Love The Bard, love The Whedon, love The Denisof.  And Much Ado is one of the few Willie Shakes comedies I can stomach seeing performed more than once a decade, so... HUZZAH!

Press release with the cast list and a few Whedon touches.

Shot in 12 days and it seems they're looking to take it the festival route this spring. Very curious about this.

To be fair, the dude can multi-task like a motherfucker. He was juggling three TV shows and some movie script work at the same time at one point.

Yeah, and weren't all those shows off the air within a year or two?  And the films didn't set the world on fire either from what I recall.

Not that I'm knocking his abilities (Firefly and Angel certainly weren't canceled for poor quality).  I want Avengers to succeed as much for Whedon to get further opportunities as for the thing itself.

Much Ado is frankly, a perfect choice for Whedon as far as The Bard goes. Very excited to see this now.

Cabin In The Woods has an April 2012 release date....................but Whedon didn't direct it.

True, but I still consider it a Whedon movie. He's as much as or more about the writing as he is the directing.

I'll go one further and say that this kind of material to me fits Whedon much better than stuff like the Avengers. Much Ado About Nothing is filled with great lines and in the hands of someone like Whedon, with his penchant for funny witty dialogue, seems like a sure thing.

I'd also love him trying to adapt some boulevard comedies. I bet he'd be great at that.

Well I'm sure Branagh was available for a quick chat if Whedon needed any pointers, I'm very interested to see how it compares to the earlier film. On the one hand Sean Maher has got to do a better job than Keanu, on the other Nathan Fillion has Michael Keaton to live up to...

Judging by the cast list they're sticking pretty close to the play so it will be more Luhrmann's "Romeo and Juliet" than "10 Things I Hate About You".

I was thinking about this and I'm not sure I agree. Whedon writes great dialogue but he also likes to do ANGST. While Hamlet is supposedly in his early 30s, he's written very much like a precocious teenager dealing with familial and existential issues whilst the chaos of war reigns in the background. He's also very quick witted, verbally running rings round the wordsmith Polonius. I always thought Hamlet was like a protagonist from one of the Comedies dropped into a Tragedy. I'd love Whedon to have a crack at it, perhaps next time!

Also, Mark Shepard for the gravedigger.
