ABC's Once upon a time

Anyone watch Once Upon a Time last night?

Not horrible, but that was some of the worst digital effects for a cricket that I've ever seen.

That was a painful, painful pilot. I expected a better, more lively (and better acted) pilot from the guys who made Lost. The premise is good and Robert Carlyle/Jennifer Morrison/Ginnifer Goodwin is enough to make me watch at least one more episode, but it was very rushed, cramming in so many elements, yet also slow as hell. I kept looking down at the clock and realizing only five minutes had passed while they powered through this plot point and that plot point.

Basically, what I'm saying, just adapt Fables and be done with it.

Fairytales the new vampires?

Whoa whoa whoa, they did not "make" Lost. Let's get that out of the way right upfront. They were staff writers and mostly did filler Hurley episodes.

Kitsis and Horowitz, right? I think they were fairly major writers on Lost, but yeah, they were staff writers. Actually the presence of Jane Espenson on this was the only thing that had me interested, and apparently the pilot stunk on ice, so unless I hear great things about later episodes I won't bother.

The funny thing is that I don't really care for Fables and don't have any particular outrage about it being blatantly ripped off, other than the fact that it's, y'know, a shitty thing to do.

Ok, finally saw this thing. I can't help shake the feeling that I was watching a miniseries because the way they were trying to pack in so much into the pilot. My wife was asking how are the writers supposed to stretch out this show beyond even a season? Here's another question: what's up with the evil queen doing some sort of warp-walk forward between the wedding crowd as she made her way to Snow White & Prince Charming? And if it's bad for Rumpelstiltskin to know a person's true name, why is it then OK two seconds later when he's saying the names of SW & PC?

Ugh... The fantasy scenes are SOOO cliche and cheap looking. And why do they make EVERYTHING including the silly dwarfes and fairies look like live-action Disney, instead of something edgier and more interesting?

The present day scenes are much better. I'll watch an episode or two more, but I am not expecting much.

....I sort of liked it.

In all seriousness, I think there's some potential there in the concept. What, not entirely sure, but I want to be wowed.

Two episodes in and I'm digging it more than Grimm.  It's certainly got grander ideas in play.  And what is it about Wicked Queens that's just so damn hot?  Not morally ambiguous homosexuals (well, for me, anyway), the ones like in this show.  Damn, she's smoking!  In both universes.

Oh it's definitely better than Grimm. But I can't tell if it's because of actual quality or just because I have the hots for Jennifer Morrison.

Yeah, Jennifer Morrison is generically pretty (my wife asked if she was the blonde from Happy Endings *chuckle*), but Lana Parrilla is ludicrously hot...in HD closeups no less. So much so that I have to wonder if the Evil Queen has an ugly manifestation to balance it all out.

Yeah im actually kind of into this.

You. Me. Outside. Now.

Was it just me or are Jennifer Morrisons pants REALLY REALLY tight? I'm not complaining but the girls I've been with wearing pants that tight could barely put their asses into my car. They had to "slide" into the car. How you supposed to kick evil's ass when you have a camel toe cutting off your circulation when you attempt to lift your leg?

I'm really not sure if I like this show or not yet but I love seeing Giancarlo Esposito as the Mirror! What a contrast from Gus Fring! Think I actually did a double take.

Caught up with episode 2 and that had me intrigued for episode 3 which was a pretty good back story on Snow White and Prince Charming.  I think I might be hooked.

This is TERRIBLE. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Boo!

(runs out of town hall meeting)

This show is bad but has entertainment value. What really sucks is that it casts a pall on "Grimm" which is actually shaping into a.fun genre show. The second episodeis a major improvement over the pilot.

Worst. Looking. Trolls. Ever.

Really. Does this show go out of its way to look low budget even for SyFy?

The cast has its charm, but the fantasy elements of this show are just sooooo unispired and plain bad.

What was with their Leno chins?  Seriously odd.

Apparently one of the producers/writers on this show went to my high school, so... that's cool, I guess.  Doesn't mean I'll be tuning in next week, though.

This show could wind up being like Burn Notice where Emma goes around helping her fairy tale clients get out of precarious situations. There would just need to be more explosions.

I actually think im liking this show. Ratings?

well this shows continues to get more interesting. I was hoping Prince Charming was going to remember his fairy tale life, but I guess that was the non-twist. Yet the previews for next week tells us that someone is actually going to remember their other life. I think I'm officially hooked.

Side note: Some of the green screens are terrible and then the CGI for the Dragon was actually pretty darn good. *headscratcher

Yeah I do enjoy this thing, how is it doing?

I know I got a slap earlier, but I'm digging it. Can't wait for the next episode! (And no stupid three month hiatus deals)

Well that was another solid episode. Now that we the audience know that the evil queen truly remembers her past, I hope we see her start doing more fantasy things in this real world setting.

The teaser for upcoming episodes look pretty darn good.

I don't know if they actually clarified that her powers came back - just that the objects are there, you know?

Anyone know what was at the bottom of that mine? I couldn't see but I thought I was missing something.

The fact Sheriff Hot Irish Guy lived for 28 years literally without a heart implies there is some magic going on in the real world.  Will probably be used to explain how the Queen ended up with her stepgrandson, as well.

He did have a heart - they felt it. Don't take her magic so literally. It was a magical artifact to control him.

It was Snow White's Glass Coffin. Think there was also a spinning wheel.

Honestly, I feel that Storeybrooke is....not quite in the real world, you know? I mean, it exists, obviously, but it isn't quite connected. Fairytale Land is another dimension, and the town is an island connected to our world by a road, like a prison of sorts. Haven't seen Lost, can't make the comparisons though I hear they're there.

But WRT the magic: Magic doesn't transfer over, like hyperspace says - however the objects do. We see her go in and crush the magic heart. We don't see her cast spells or anything - otherwise, why is Emma around if she could just magic her away in a setting where she has complete control? We have all the living characters, we have all the 'artifacts'/objects there (some in plain view, like the yard gnome, others that are hidden like the room of hearts, and others that are buried like the coffin, and others that are in that pawn shop...)

Anyone willing to take the bet that Regina Mills is actually the Miller's Daughter (who learned Rumpelstiltskin's name and turned straw to gold) turned Evil Queen?

Damn how did you see that? 60 inch high def and I completely missed it. Anyway yeah I basically agree. She has to abide by the rules of her own spell which means no magic. I think the objects are loopholes of some sort. Not to mention part of the spell is that all of the same relationships carry over. So what she used to do with a spell she still can do but with real world means such as a position of authority ect.. Rumpelstiltskin though may have figure something out.

Yeah. I mean, I don't know how Rumple figures into all this.

But it sure aint no damn gardening he was doing with that shovel.

Rumple's back story was pretty great. It offers a bit of sympathy for his character, but clearly puts the new sheriff in town between TWO EVIL BADDIES.

ONCE has become a breakout show for me this year.

Yeah im really enjoying this. Grimm is going to get cancelled any day right?

Nice seeing Emma Caulfield as the Hansel and Grettel Witch. Very creepy. What was more exciting was the last 5 minutes of the episode where we get a new character that rides in on a Harley. I'm surprised how consistent each episode is becoming.

I was watching the episode as regularly as normal up to the point where Gretal handed the satchel over to the Queen, at which point I went from normal guy to drooling, hollering "DAMNLOOKATTHEMTITTIES!!!" guy.

That woman is insanely gorgeous.

wow. So there was an 8th dwarf named Stealthy. Shame he wasn't very good as his name implied.

Stealthy the dwarf.

Heh heh heh heh heh. So dumb.

Finally caught up tonight on all the episodes. I'll admit that this show is getting better as it moves along. It helps enormously that they have cut back on the annoying kid. I could watch a show with the Mayor/Queen and Mr.Gold/Rumpelstiltskin battling it out. Get rid everyone else I say. I was a bit disappointed that they made the Queen a bit cliche in wanting to kill off her husband. I was sort of hoping that they would flesh it out a bit more and maybe say that she wasn't always wanting him dead, but the way he harped on his dead wife sort of snapped her. I'm still curious as to what Snow White did that the Queen is so hateful towards her about and Snow White feels guilty about.

On another note, since I read Fables and I know they sort of used it as a basis for the show, I'm getting a real sense that the new guy who showed up in town is the father of the Literals. If so, then the writers may be planning on expanding this series in a big way in the next season (if there is one).

Yes and we have confirmation now that Rumpel does in fact know who he is. I kind of figured but I must admit to cracking a smile when he looked at her dead on and said his name, she was shocked.

That was a great part. I'd still like to get more of a reason for the Queen doing what she does other than, SHE'S BAAAAAADDDDDD!!!!! Plus, has anyone else noticed that the women on this show tend to be portrayed in a slightly more negative perspective than their male counterparts, IMO? We have Rump being shown now as redeemable even though he's down some fucked up things. The Queen is simply shown over and over again as being "eeeeeee-villllllll" for the hell of it. Prince Charming is being painted as if he's mentally challenged while Snow White's is all about being the other woman until recently. I know there's more, but that's all I can up with at the moment.

Lastly, how is it that Emma couldn't tell that the mirror guy was lying since she's said over and over again about her special lie-detector ability?

Really? I thought the show was kind of targeted at women and I was one of the handful of guys watching it. I don't think the women are portrayed any worse honestly. She is the evil queen who manipulates everyone around her. And Rumpel is still ya.....evil. There may be some redemption for him later though. Remember though that the woman prince is married to is supposed to be a semi crappy person right? In fairytale land she was portrayed negatively. The show really is about the battle between 2 women, everyone else is kind of a pawn that the queen uses.

Anyway it must be nice to live in fairytale town. If someone wrongs you the ENTIRE TOWN turns on your enemy. I mean really that was amazing, and who even knew that woman? I would think the school teacher knew more people in the town but wow guess not. Im still waiting to see who this mysterious motorcycle man is. I figured he would be the golden knight but nope.

Which one? She had a light one and a navy blue during her marriage days, then a variety of black ones during her dark days. Personally, regardless, she looks good in ALL. Hands down the best looking woman on that show. I keep thinking that she is the way she is because of how good she looks and everyone's hating.

well we now know what those skeleton keys are for.. I guess the Mayor has keys to everyone's houses and hearts to all of the inhabitants.  This show keeps getting better.

All of them! I think there was a crimson one wit ha red corset that was pretty bitchin.

Though Snow White/Blonde Chick Sirens were pretty hot too.

She and Gold are so much fun to watch.

gotta love bringing Amy Acker and Emile De Raven on the show. I also love that the CGI/green screens are getting better.
