Lifted from C&VG

• GTA V "evolves nearly every mechanic, features the biggest world in series history and introduces a new technology that radically changes the way players control the game.
• Three main characters are called Michael, Trevor and Frankie.
• A quick menu can be called up to switch characters, the camera pulls away into a Google Earth-style vantage point and then drops into wherever the chosen character is
• Trevor is described as having a "maniacal personality"
• Trevor is in Blaine County, a barren, rundown desert region filled with bikers, meth heads and other people from the fringes of society
• Characters can "flick off" people and people react differently depending on the area. In a rough-and-tumble
• neighbourhood the reaction will be different from someone in a posh boutique store
• Rockstar's playtester pours a trail of gas away from a vehicle and drops a zippo lighter on it, the flame travels back and causes a huge explosion.
• Franklin is seen on Vespucci Beach looking for a car he's to repossess
• Waterfront activities include a muscle beach gym
• He drops the top of the car once he gets in
• Ammu-Nation is back
• Each character has his own personality motivation and skill set
• They go about their daily business when you're not in control, so you might find them in surprising situations when you take control of them again
• Each character has a fleshed out story arc
• Complicated, multi-tiered heist missions inspired by GTA IV's Three Leaf Clover are "peppered" into the game
• Heists are a big theme
• Rockstar is addressing mission diversity in pairing characters, it showed off a mission involving all three characters
• The trio need to perform a snatch-and-grab to get the FIB off their backs
• Trevor berates security agent guarding a chopper, Michael urges him to calm down but he keeps running his mouth, he only agreed to do the mission in exchange for help springing his friend Brad out of jail.
• Franklin isn't to comfortable with Trevor
• The three change outfits and rapell down the side of a skyscraper, when they arrive players take control of Michael rapelling down, the mechanic is reminiscent of Rainbow Six Vegas
• The musical score seems to react to the action
• They extract the target by holding him hostage with one arm while pointing a gun at interrogators with the other, at that point an icon appears giving the player the option to switch character
• You can stay as Michael and try and pick of the enemies or select franklin, switch to his perspective and snipe them from afar.
• Transition is smooth and camera angle helps you adjust
• During the chase through Los Santos the player can switch to Trevor to pilot the getaway, snipe the other pilots as Franklin, or fire an assault rifle out the back of a chopper as Michael
• Rockstar is leveraging cinematic tricks learned from Max Payne 3

I find this very hard to believe, but that would be incredible.

ETA: nm, appears to be true.  Strange that it's the largest yet but is confirmed only one city.

There's a "flipping the bird" button? It's about goddamn time.

Saint's Row has had that for 2 games now.  But you can also do a Rick Flair style taunt if you like.

That being said, the idea of controlling 3 characters concurrently is intriguing.

Quote:
Switch between three protagonists at any time
Concept of doing iit like the Liberty City Episodes - three charas
Multiple perspective - clear advantages
Constantly switching - not rotating 5 missions as one character, then 5 as another
Allow them to create more diverse style of lead protag, tie certain behaviors to certain charas
Gameplay side - if charas lived apart, players could experience more of the qorld more quickly
Rockstar eliminate flat spots during missions - allow players to switch perspectives press of a button
Lets you play as both protagonist and antagonist - Dan Houser
Less wide-ranging characters "a lot of the time, the people you're not necessarily fighting with, but bickering with, are your other lead characters"

Michael
[Retired, Early 40s, livesin Rockford Hills, Nice Clothes]
Houser: idea was for an older, successful guy getting sucked back into the game
Voiceover character in the first trailer
retired bank rober living more lavish life than most people in witness protection thanks to deal with FIB
Demo opens with him resting comfortably in a pair of flip-flops next to a pool in the neighborhood Rockford Hills (Bev Hills)
Distance: his private tennis court
Smoggy horizon: Los Santos downtown
Isn't content with life, wife spending his dough (he hates her), doesn't know how to communicate with his kids
Kids: Tracey (teenage daughter), we see her playing Just Dance-style game, son named Jimmy
Wife: Amanda, we see her heading out the door on a shopping spree - shopaholic
Wife drives Sentinel XS sports car
Michael hops on bicycle rides down the street
Neighborhood has "manicured lawns, sprinkler systems, rolling hills," and luxury cars

Trevor
Rockstar tester calls up menu to switch charas, camera zooms out in Google Earth style thing, and drops to "ramshackle trailer" in "desert region" of map
Michael's longtime friend
Trevor is first seen fighting a battle with toilet
Hops in Bodhi large truck (looks like Jeep Wrangler JK), drives down the road
Lives in Blaine county, region filled with bikers, meth heads, walks of life on fringes
Trevor drievs down road, parks, and flicks off building loiterers
Rockstar suggests you do this in various cases to see different people's reactions
Teseter grabs gasoline, douses a parked truck, pours a trail away, drops a lit Zippo, and boom - flame travels towards truck, sets tires on fire, then chassis, then finally the gas tank, and explosion

Franklin
Cruising Vespucci Beach (Venice Beach) looking for car to take back for his boss
Waterfront filled with activities: muscle beach gym
Franklin finds his target: a 9F (Audi R8), gets in, drops top, rides off
Los Santos familiarity: Ammu-Nation is back

Each chara has own personality, motivations, skillset
When not in control of one, they go about their daily business
You may be surprised what situations they're in when you switch back to check up on them

"The contrast between three different experiences, geopgrahics, and vibes to eeverything should be really strong, and I think it's something that gives the game a unique feeling when you're visint gthese people's lives and seeing what they do," says Houser. "Within the story, you're going to know information about a character before they know what the other people know when you play as them."

SUNNY LOS SANTOS
Idea of a proper Los Angeles
Thought San Andreas was very small and sketchlike
Hollywood, the porn industry, marijuana, immigration battle, gated communities, luxury pockets, homeless people, bankrupt government - enough topics for Rockstar signature style
Largest open-world playground to date
Interior and exterior spaces together: bigger than Red Dead Redemption, San Andreas, and GTA4 worlds combined, with room to spare
Enviro includes: beachfronts, wine country, large wilderness area, Salton sea region, military base, suburban hulls, urban center
Scuba to explore detailed ocean floor along Los Santos coastline

More vehicles than any GTA to date: BMX bike, mountain bikes, road bikes, dirt bikes, huge amount of cars and trucks, helis, planes, ATVs, jet Skis
Trevor is former war vet with flight experience, so he can fly a plane at any time - dont need to wait until endgame

Characters come together
Pursuit of mighty dollar
Each chara has full story arc
Peppers several complicated, multitiered hests in vein of GTA4's popular "three Leaf Clover" mission across narrative
Heists are a big theme
People love bank jobs, especially when they feel prepped
Rockstar addressing mission diversity to leverage different pairings of the protags
"We want to move from having one character in a mission to having two to having three" - akes missions feel more distinct, high in action, diffeerent tone depending on who's on them

Making the switch
Playing as Franklin, GI meets up with Trevor and Michael, who have already reunited. Mission: perform a snatch-n-grab to get the FIB off their case. Meet at a helipad to pick up civilian chopper FIB is supplying. Trevor is talking to sec guard with Mike pulls up, how he's just standing there while everyone is out having fun, Mike urges him to cal down, but Trevor doesn't listen.
This appears to be Franklin's first encounter with Trevor.
Everyone hops in choppper.
Arrive at IAA HQ (CIA), Franklin is ready with sniper rifle at nearby building, ready to react. Trevor hovers overhead. Players become Michael, who rappels down the side of the sky-scraper to locate the correct office. See into every office, where people are going about busiess. Music ramps up as Michael goes downward.
Michael locates target, smashes threw window, grabs him, holds hostage, points gun at interrogators, then ICON appears to switch
You could either stay in the same role as Michael and wait for Franklin to snipe these guys, or switch to Franklin
You're now Franklin, after a smooth transition, and can snipe the targets
Trevor picks up Michael and the target, helocopter chase ensues, players can either pilot the plane as Trevor, snipe other pilots as Franklin, or fire assault rifle from the back of the chopper as Michael

KILLING TIME IN LOS SANTOS
GTA4: Bowling Strip Clubs Live Stand-up comedy Interenet Cafes TV shows
Greater degree of variety in GTA5: different side-missions, more sophisticated mini-games
Will use characters and the rest of their lives "Michael's family, Franklin's crazy franks, or Trevor out in the desert with access to planes very early on"
Each protag will have unique hobbies only they can participate in "one or two key minigame activities per character" to separate one from another
Customization like San Andreas (RPG traits, gain or lose weight) impossible, but you can customize with diff clothing
TV returning in GTA 5 - "funny new stuff that's pretty odd to do in a game"
Outdoors: yoga, triathlons, jet skiing, base jumping, tennis, full golf game on full golf course
No romance because of nature of characters
Each protag has own cast of friends they can hang out with: Lamar is Franklin's crazy friend; Kimmy is Michael's lazy, pot-smoking 20-year-old son; Ron is Trevor's best friend and a paranoid conspiracy theorist; Amanda is michael's wife who he can't stand
Familiar faces from GTA 4 will appear, but dont expect Niko or anyone for the PS2 games - they never existed in this world
Economy: "very vibrant and fun economy", no property, but loads of other stuff to by
Cell phone concept still there, but no calls from friends all the time, phone will surface some of the acitvities, phone will be "more contemporary," use it to acces internet, activities moved to map
Occassionally bump into pedestrians you could interact with. In demo: Jesus-looking preacher with white robes encountered by Franklin, has more to offer than one-liner
Dynamic Missions: drive around, see broen-down car or hitchiker on road, you can pull over and see what happens. Go off road in desert, maybe you'll come across two parked cars and a bunch of dead bodies. In Los Santos, if you seee a cash van, you can steal it and make a quick score. Or, catch the mugger who knabbed granny's purse.
Multiplayer: it's there, but reveal at another time. Rockstar pleased with direction.

ALIVE WORLD
clouds roll over the sky
helicopters fly about
birds fly
cars drive
pedestrians hang around
dogs jump against fences if you walk too close
sprinklers wet the grass
puddles gather around carwash hoses
neighbors lie in the sun by the pool
dodgy guys hang around outside stores
inside 24-7 store: everything on the shelves are modeled and textured

GAMEPLAY EVOLVED
Cars hold to ground better - not "big and boatlike in GTAIV"
More physics to cars, feels more like racing game
Racing game itch will be scratched
shooting has evolved in terms of core mechanics of how you play
melee is better than past - but will never be as big a deal as shooting
post #307 of 1202

Missions inspired by Three Leaf Clover? YES PLEASE.

I like the idea of improved driving, but it does need to stay somewhat 'arcadey'.  Still, does this snippet:

"dogs jump against fences if you walk too close"

mean they're introducing animals?  PETA is going to love that.

I hope you can bust out your driver-side window and flip fools the bird instead of shooting them to death. The car-handling is the biggest deal for me. I hated the handling in IV, it just wasn't fun. Hauling ass through the city with cops in hot pursuit is what its all about.

The trailer looks good. Hopefully the game itself will share the somewhat lighter tone of this trailer as opposed to the "Why so serious!?" tone of GTA4.

It'll probably be the same tone as Grand Theft Auto 4.

The tone of the trailers between the two is very different, and this trailer (thankfully) focuses on some of the crazy mission set pieces that they've obviously focused on this time around.  Even if the tone is serious it makes a big difference when they give you enough over the top crazy missions to break up the constant low ebb of emotion in the story.

It'll probably be somewhat close to The Ballad of Gay Tony in terms of missions.

I just wouldn't get my hopes up of Rockstar looking back at earlier games in the series and saying "Yup that's what we want to do" since they've clearly been going in a different direction for a while now.

Yeah looks more in line with The Ballad of Gay Tony.

I'm also looking forward to the Multiplayer stuff, GTA4 had the basics and can be rather nutty. RDR's online was terrific fun. They mentioned in the Game Informer interview they want this multiplayer to do what GTA3 did for Single Player...

I'm gonna mess around with this game soooo much.

I'm trying to consider all the magical possibilities of RDR's ambient system in GTA's world, and it's delicious. See Grandma getting jumped in an alley, you pull over and pop the crackhead in the crackhead. As you trot back to your vehicle, you hear "Thanks for takin' out that mugger, mister. [she's jumped by a mountain lion] AAAUGHGHGH"

Rottweilers are obviously the new mountain lions.  *shudder*

Will have to watch the trailer when I get home, but liking what I'm hearing so far. It's good to hear that they've followed RDR's lead with the ambient stuff. now, if they can do the same with the shooting and checkpointing, I may finally get a GTA I'll actually play through to completion. There was a lot about GTA4 I loved, but having to replay the same 20 minute stretches of clunky shooting every time I died just killed it for me.

That's the thing, Rockstar's problem has never been cutting a great trailer, and this one certainly delivers the goods on the visual/story front. It's really going to come down to the gameplay improvements, and having had a spat of great open-world games recently (Saint's Row, Sleeping Dogs, their own RDR) the pressure's on to execute on the mechanics end.

IGN just did a little speculation on the 5 new images.  They know as much as we do, of course, but it's still fun to anticipate different scenarios.  I really hope they implement hunting like Red Dead Redemption.  I would love to shoot/harpoon some sharks.

3 playable characters and still not a woman? Another missed opportunity.

You do get the opportunity to shoot women though, so that's a plus.  (Not being serious, just thinking about my nagging wife sometimes).

Dear all

Today, we have an official release date to share with you: Grand Theft Auto V will arrive in stores on September 17, 2013.

We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time. GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.

To all Grand Theft Auto fans, please accept our apologies for the delay, and our promise that the entire team here is working very hard to make the game all it can be. We are doing all we can to help ensure it will meet if not exceed your expectations come September – we thank you for your support and patience.

Yours,
The GTA Team

aaaaww...

I never get pissed at game dates being pushed back anymore.  Get it right, then charge me $60 for it.

While this is probably the ONLY game I'm actually anticipating, I feel kinda ashamed that I never even knew there was a release date previously given.

Honestly though, this works out in my favor. Work is a bit more calm during September so that will allow me more nights of 2 a.m. MP missions. I've already decided that I'm going to dust off my Xbox just for this game.

This. I know not every developer has the luxury, but I'm totally down with the "it's done when it's done" attitude.

Yeah, especially a game of this size, I have no problem waiting a couple of months for that extra polish. Between this, Darksiders 3, Dragon Age 3 and how many other awesome games coming out this year, I'm gonna be broke and my girlfriend is gonna hate me for never wanting to leave my house.

Considering the rights are currently in limbo and the studio dissolved, not any time soon I would think.

Yeah, take your time Rockstar.  I have plenty of games to keep me entertained.  Delay it until you feel it's perfect.  This is such a big and important (important for having fun, anyway) game that they need to make sure it's not rushed.  I like it.

Sort of glad it was delayed (sorry to the folks who wanted it early). I wasn't super psyched for it and this frees up my budget to get Aliens : Colonial Marines and Bioshock : Infinity. Also, the game will be of better final quality when released.
