CHUD Watch-Along - Save a Date for November!

Thread Starter

So a small group of us just finished up a watch-along of Starship Troopers and had a lot of fun with it.  We'd all love for it to happen again, so I'm gonna go along with this momentum and try to set one up for November.

Here's what this thread is for:

  • Setting up another date and time for November.
  • Finding a time that works for more Chewers around the world that are interested in participating.
  • Picking the movie.

For the DATE

  • We need to figure out which day of the week is the best compromise for everyone considering the sheer discrepancy in time-zones.

For the TIME

  • Same thing goes for the time.  People have jobs, family responsibilities, and a healthy sleep cycle to maintain.
  • To give you an example: for Starship Troopers, I started the movie at 4 pm (PST).  Justin Clark started it at 7 pm (EST).  Stelios started it at 2 am the next day (EEST).
  • Tricky.

For the MOVIE

  • Just to keep us on track, I'm going to limit the next choice to the following that were suggested before.
  1. Starship Troopers (repeat)
  2. Rocky IV
  3. Commando
  4. Batman & Robin
  5. Galaxy Quest

So we'll see how it goes.

I vote GALAXY QUEST and my preference is for no morning movies, at least not on Saturdays since I work till like 4 30 PM EST on Saturdays

I vote for a Wednesday evening viewing.

Commando all the way.

Thread Starter

Because I don't think anyone will vote for it, I want BATMAN & ROBIN!

But I'm cool with anything.

I'm pretty cool with date and times as well.

I'm on PST, so if it's a Sat. or Sun viewing, I can participate.  Weeknights are probably hard for me as I don't get home until 7:00 PM most evenings.

Having said that, Commando or Rocky IV.

YES!

But I simply cannot do a weekday except for special circumstances.

Weekday evenings are best for me. Sorry to be the buzzkill.

I can do Saturday or Sunday mornings, Eastern time in the US, with the caveat that I can only do every other Sat/Sun morning, since I have my kids every other weekend. This weekend, for instance, is doable for me, but next weekend is out.

But a 7 or 8 PM start time, weeknights, is ideal for me, with enough advanced warning.

All of those movies sound like great watch-along candidates, though watching B&R again, all in one sitting, sorta fills my heart with dread.

I have a giant block of time off from November 3rd to the 12th that would be ideal, but past that, just about any day after 7pm, I'm free.

My heart wants to go with Rocky IV, but my brain says Commando since--brace yourselves--I haven't seen it since I was 8 years old.

They're all good candidates.   I suggested Rocky IV in the other thread due to it being a completely sincere (if horribly misguided) attempt to bring understanding between East and West so you have the unintentional comedy covered but then you have the montages which would be fun to riff on.   B&R has the makings of a classic but the one time I saw it, it felt like a so bad it's really bad kind of movie instead of circling back round to so bad it's good.   It felt like an endurance test to me.   I haven't seen Commando since I was a kid and only remembered that it had my childhood crush in it and not much else.   I'm down for seeing it again.

Tally me banana...

  • Princess Kate

  • mcnooj82

  • Judas Booth

Damn... trying to find a good date and time is going to be REALLY tricky.

'Commando' all the way. All are good suggestions, but 'Commando' will be epic. Saturday or Sunday mornings work best for me.
Additional suggestions for future installments:
'Flash Gordon' - it's a repeat, but the first go-round was entirely too much fun.
'Highlander 2: the Quickening'
'Airplane!'
'Pee Wee's Big Adventure'

I'd vote for COMMANDO before I'd vote for ROCKY,

and just FYI: I'm OK with any night time watching, as long as it's not before 8 30 PM on a Wednesday

I think it's safe to say that we'll be going Commando in November.

Justin wants us to do 'The Brown Bunny'.

BAMAAN.

ps I'm in.

I've got to get in on one of these, and I'd definitely be on board for "Commando." If we do a week night, I'll be available after 7 PST. I'll be out of town on November 9th, though, if we're aiming for a Wednesday screening. My weekends are wide open.

I'm totally in for any watchalong that happens at the same time as the recent Tranformers CLASSIC. I don't mind what movie, I just can't do weekdays because of the time zone.

Nooj's gif gave me an idea.

How many of you can get your hands on Spaced?

Thread Starter

My hands are always all over Spaced.  UK DVD and the US DVD!

I'm on board for Commando. Other than catching parts of it on cable, I haven't actually watched the film since I saw it in the theater, though I've loved reading about it here at CHUD.

(On board assuming I can get my calendar to align with the viewing day and time.)

I'm going to need some advance notice for this, a week or so probably, so I can order it from the library

Other suggestions for future watch-alongs:

'Monty Python and the Holy Grail'

'Monty Python's Life of Brian'

'Monty Python's the Meaning of Life'

'Big Trouble in Little China'

Maybe it's just me, but a watch-a-long for a comedy seems kind of redundant, no?   It will be a bunch of posts saying "Great joke!"

Yeah, watching intentionally funny films with buddies is fun because you share a bunch of laffs, but for any kind of commentary track it doesn't work very well. The best films for this kind of thing are your campy and/or kitsch and/or so-bad-it's-good type of fare.

I'm in for Spaced or Commando, or anything really. These things are always a blast.

I think this is true for straight out comedies, but something like BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA would be a blast. It's a film best watched in a group, anyway, and I think there's enough there for us to enjoy and comment on without it being just a "Great joke!" sort of session.

Dudes, just playing "Spot the reference" would be a ton of fun with Spaced. I could pass a full episode just talking about how brilliant I find the editing of the beginning of episode 1.

But I'm more than game for Commando. Or, Raw Deal.

Valid points on the Python films. I stand completely behind BTILC, though.

I say we stick with COMMANDO for November in order to keep up the momentum.

Spaced would be a lot of fun to save for next month!

Then see a date for COMMANDO already! Dammit!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Alright!

Ok, I'm just gonna shout one out and see how people react :

Friday, November 18th

COMMANDO

(I haven't taken in anyone's preferred schedules into account due to the fact that they all conflict in some way)

I'm a West Coaster, so weeknights are probably out for me, unless you all want to start at 10:00 PM Eastern time.

Try to do it a bit earlier than the Starship Troopers time and I'm in like Flynn.

Ehh, who am I kidding? I'm in either way.

Hmm... it looks like people in the US will be going back an hour on Sunday, November 6th when Daylight Saving Time ends.

I wonder if that'll make this easier or trickier...

Yeah, Big Trouble would be great. That's exactly what I was talking about with "campy and/or kitsch". Anything with ridiculously macho elements is totally fair game.

I'm out on the 18th. It's a weekend I have my daughters, and I can't justify blowing them off for two hours for this, fun as it'll be.

Sorry.

Good to know.  Let's try a different date then.

How do people feel about Thanksgiving weekend?  Probably not, right?

From a purely selfish point of view, Saturday mornings work best. I don't have to worry about any time conflicts, and the wife won't bitch about missing out on a date night.

Saturday mornings are probably my best slot, too.  They are my laziest of lazy mornings.

I do like Saturday mornings as well, but that leaves Kate in the dust.

What do you say, Kate?  I know you still read CHUD while you're at work!

The needs of the many... hahahahah.

Saturday's good, Saturday's good. I can hang out, you can show me around...

It also starts your weekend off just right.

Saturday morning works for me, unless I'm fucking up my international times again.

So for you East Coasters... what time do you consider 'Saturday morning?'

I'd be rockin' like Donkey Kockin if you guys/gals settled on (your) Saturday morning.

Thread Starter

How, let's try this again.

Sorry Kate.  I know you have work on Saturday mornings, but... how do people feel about:

Saturday morning, November 12th

COMMANDO

or...

Saturday morning, November 26th

COMMANDO

This is to stay away from MichaelM's weekend with his daughters.

And I ask again:  what time are Chewers on the east coast thinking for that morning?  Like 9 am?  10 am?

Well obviously I'd prefer a time where I can participate, though I understand the needs of the many. I'd simply point out that other than STARSHIP TROOPERS, I've already been excluded from these in the past due to Saturday morning time scheduling

Up to you

Thanks for understanding, Kate.  Maybe you could brush up on Commando before the watch-along and then just participate from work?

Saturday seems to have the most momentum.  I don't want to lose it.  This stuff never seems to really happen when the momentum dies.

Of course, unless anyone else has an issue with a Saturday morning (EST)...

Keep in mind that a comfortable morning start time on EST is a pretty early morning for PST (which I don't mind, but other west coast people might).

And I'm not entirely sure how this works out after Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, but:

10 am (EST) on Saturday would be

7 am (PST) on Saturday

5 pm (EEST) on Sunday for stelios... I think.  Give or take an hour.
