By the time the inventory dries up it will be about time for the Mega-Holyshit-Ultimate-Yeeeeeeah edition.

I'm not the target audience, but as long as this doesn't upset the fans, I don't see a problem. I expect Potter mania to die off eventually (though I've been wrong with that prediction before), so the idea that the films are one day going to be hard to get doesn't strike me as an eventuality anyone should worry about anytime soon (especially since, as Renn points out, this is mostly just a slow down in production)

In a weird way, I miss this kind of thing going on. I’ve long theorized that a big part of the reason Star Wars had such a huge resurgence with Gen X back in the 90s wasn’t just to do with the Special editions but the fact that the films were rereleased on VHS for the first time in years.  When we were growing up getting to see those movies was because they showed them on TV at Christmas or someone had a tape copy (either bootleg or hideously expensive wholesale copy), and actually being able to go into a store and buy your own copies was a major thing. It added to the mystique of those movies when we were growing up. It was a time when limited runs were actually limited, not ‘Kinda limited but we’ve pressed so many copies shops will be buried in the fuckers for years’

Cut to nowadays, where I’m not buying the blu-ray box set because I can’t justify paying for these same movies for the THIRD time in a decade.

I mean, Disney still profits very well from limited runs, not least because when these movies are rereleased it’s an event. We’ve had potter movie after Potter movie thrown at us for the last ten years or so; slowing down the supply now gives people a chance for people to take a breath, let them process the whole saga. Let the movies sit in their memory a little while, let them get nostalgic for them… Then bang – huge rerelease, mega boxset, the works.

I’m totally aware that in the age of torrents this idea could never realistically work, but dammit, it’s a nice idea…

I'm all for it as long as it gets us "Ultimate Editions" that rival the LOTR extended releases in material-depth. If not, don't bother.

And in packaging, too. The EEs have some extremely classy box art IMHO
