Tintin pre-release

Couldn't find a thread for this so here we go.

Saw this last night in a PACKED theater (900 seater on a monday night and the premiere was last week!!) and judging by peoples reactions throughout and afterward, I'm not the only person who loved it.

Just a great roaring adventure sprinkled with some very funny moments and really creative action sequences. Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock once again steals the show, and the movie really picks up once he is introduced.

On a technical level the movie is spectacular. If you have read the comics you know that Hergé painted all the background stuff with incredible detail and left the characters be very simple lines. In the movie the characters are more realistic while still "heightened" but the background models and landscapes look amazing.

But skip the 3D. I wish I had done that. The colors were too dark and a lot of detail was lost.

Look forward to this.

I wasn't impressed with the first teaser, but the most recent trailer was a vast improvement and gave a better idea of the movie's tone. Loved the gag with the rocket launcher. The sad thing is that Tin Tin looks like it might be a better Indiana Jones movie than Crystal Skulls was.

Well I was an early defender of Crystal Skull, which in hindsight was a mistake. I still enjoy parts of it but as a whole it doesn't hold up.

Tintin is by far a better movie than Crystal Skull.

The Marketing for Tintin has not been good. After watching the movie I really don't understand the stuff they put in the trailer as there is so much better stuff to pick from.

I'm in Turkey right now, so this is probably the only movie coming out this year that I could see before most of you. I was going to automatically skip it because I hate mo-cap (did not enjoy "The Polar Express", "Beowulf", or "Avatar" very much at all), but the positive word of mouth has me considering giving this one a chance.

There's also the fact that it's directed by Steven Spielberg and even though I haven't enjoyed some of his more recent work, I can never completely write off a guy who made movies like "E.T.", "Jaws", "Schindler's List", and "Catch Me If You Can".

Its appeal is also increased by the fact that it was co-written by Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish. Didn't love "Hot Fuzz" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World", but "Spaced" and "Shaun of the Dead" are near and dear to my heart, and "Attack the Block" just thoroughly rocked my world as the most consistently enjoyable new movie I've seen in years.

The pedigree of this movie is damn impressive, even if I've found the work of its creative team inconsistent. That's why despite my aversion towards mo-cap, I'll probably give this one a look and check it out next week when it comes out here.
