What are the whistle-blowing laws in your state like?

No ones saying you should nail him publicly Nick, and I know you feel like he helped you out, but this guys sounds like he needs to be put out of business just on general principle. He may have helped you a little (sounds like he buys people so he can abuse them to me but whatever) but what about everyone else he feels impugned to treat in such terrible, terrible ways?

If he applies his unique brand of social interaction at home as well, he should be anonymously reported to police on those grounds as well.

Hell at this rate you may be doing HIM a favor, guys sounds like a prime candidate to turn up as a random body bound and gagged in landfill.

He helped you out, by giving you a job that doesn't even pay you fairly, works you like a dog, and brings you literally to tears?

Seriously, there is loyalty and then there is delusion.

That uncle is bad person straight up. He is helping no one out, he is exploiting plain and simple. I would whistle blow for all you got. File complaints were ever you could. Don't be all batter-wife-syndrome. Plus you hint that he is an even worse person out side of this ? Yeah screw him.

Stop making excuses and saying probably. What he is doing is 100% illegal and immoral. Even in a "Right to Work" state there are still laws protecting workers.

This guy is a monster and trust me, there will be no one crying at his funeral. Which really should be happening any day now.

How vindictive is he?

If it was me reporting him my biggest concern would be about the worst case senario. If your Uncle places the blame on one of the workers and goes after the guy, is the worker just going to get fired or is he also going to get his brake lines cut?

You know, you're right. 100% right.  I think he does exactly that.

Still waiting on hearing back from the WFD Department.  Nothing so far.  If I don't hear back today, via email, I'm going to give them a call on Monday.

That's some shit you're dealing with.  I remember when I was putting my wife through law school I was working two jobs, busting ass all day laying brick, and then jockeying a counter at night at a convience store. Getting maybe 5 hours of sleep a night if I was lucky. The physical, mental and emotional toll was grueling and I did it for two and half years. But I had a good work experience so that helped.

I can't begin to imagine the hell you're going through but I will say this: Nothing is worth what you're going through. My advice to you would be to blow the whistle and bail. The economy may suck but this asshole deserves to be taken down a peg.

This. On your deathbed, you're not going to be saying, "Gee, I wish I could've stomached taking even more abusive shit from my asshole uncle."

Life's short. Don't give the assholes the slack to keep rimming everyone else with a broken beer bottle.

There, I fixed that for you.

Nick, does your wife know what's going on?

Ha, I like that.

She does, and doesn't.  She knows about the BS hour deductions, but she doesn't know about a lot of the other shit.  I just found out today from a guy I was talking to about this, to tell the DWFD, that he FINES workers who work over 70 hours a week.  Now, think about it, your on a job site, and you have to work as long as the foreman tells you, if you happen to go over 70 a week, isn't that the foreman's fault?  Nope, not in his world.  I guess he fines the workers $100 is you work over 70 hours a week.

One thing that he did awhile ago, that still bugs me to this day.  My wife never met him, until AFTER we were married.  He didn't come to out wedding, which was fine, but sent us a check.   It was for a large amount but when my wife my filling out thank you cards for our gifts the next week, she only addressed him in the letter.   She had no idea he had a new wife.  Like I said, she never even met him before.  The card was signed by just him, and the check was in his name.  Well, he called a few days after she sent it out, and told her to write his wife an apology letter.  Didn't ask, but told.  My wife felt terrible about not putting his wifes name on the thank you card, but she didn't know she even existed.  I never told her, because i didn't realize she didn't put her name on the card.  i just thought, "the balls to call up and TELL her to write her an apology letter".

Having been in a bad job or two in my time, I can sympathize with your plight NickP.  However, there is a duty you have to yourself to see this asshole get busted to the fullest extent of the law possible.  Predatory dickheads like this deserve nothing more than a bullet in the head.  You HAVE to bust him for your own good.

So, NickP. What's the status of things?

This is like the kind of thing that went on in the 1920s.  Situations like this are exactly why big business wants rid of unions for good.

I don't know what state you're in but I found the following on the North Carolina Dept. of Labor website:

Quote:
The time an employee spends driving or riding as a part of their job may or may not be hours worked based on the circumstances and under certain conditions. Regular home-to-work and work-to-home travel is normally not work-time. Travel from the employer's office to a worksite and travel from the worksite back to the employer's office is work-time for the driver of a company vehicle. Travel from the employer's office to a worksite and travel from the worksite back to the employer's office is not work-time for a rider in a company vehicle as long as the following conditions are met: (1) the riding to and from the worksite and office in the company vehicle is optional and not mandatory, (2) for the trip to the first or only worksite, the rider does not help to load the company vehicle at the office, and (3) for the trip from the last or only worksite back to the office, the rider does not help to unload the company vehicle once back at the office. The travel-time between worksites is work-time for both drivers and riders regardless if using a company vehicle or an employee's personal vehicle.

The only advice I can give you is to document everything.  If you haven't already, start keeping a journal and marking times and dates of when these things happened, as well as details, then email it to yourself to put a time stamp on it.  Good luck.

I emailed the department of workforce development.  NOTHING.  I called them, and they basically gave me the run around and acted like they didn't care.

So, when this past Friday came, I called up, and quit.  I'm not done though, I'm still going to pursue this thing and try to right stuff for my friends that still work there.  Least I can do.

Besides the Workforce Development department.... what else is there?  Who can I contact?

I GUARANTEE you that a local news station would LOVE this story.  Fucking LOVE it.  You say this is the biggest company of its kind in the state, so that makes the story even better.  It's fucking November sweeps--they love running those kinds of stories because they rope in the viewers.

Now that you've quit, you cannot stop in exposing this guy. He can't get away with it. This is some serious feudalism going on

I was thinking the same thing: a media expose is the way to go, be it print, online or TV. Exposing fraudulent businesses is something field reporters fucking live for.
