Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol Pre Release Thread

So, watching the trailer, I think I figured something out:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Brant is Holloway's character in disguise. The franchise wasn't being setup to hand over to Renner, but to hand over to Holloway.

Also, I have to wonder if the bad guys aren't some kind of old Soviet version of the IMF.

Really, I kind of love the two trailers and the behind the scenes feature. I am trying to not get overhyped for this one, but really, the idea of Brad Bird doing a live action spy film is pretty damn exciting.

Probably my most ancitipated movie for the rest of the year. (Sadly?)

The action looks great. GREAT. On one level, it's so beyond the original television series that it's a joke. On another level, action movies are too needlessly complicated and/or marred by the need for "continuity" so I am all for a blank slate action franchise like this to go somewhere new every time.

The more I watch the trailer, the more I get a feeling of old school spy film to it, especially with that rocket launching out of the water.

I don't think I've ever been as excited for the 4th film in a franchise as I am for this, much less a spotty franchise like M:I. And this includes X-Men: First Class.

With the shots of the rocket and the Brad Bird connection, it makes me think of a live-action Iron Giant!

Exactly! And that Jeremy Renner fall is more Time Tunnel than Mission Impossible TV series

So from what I've seen from the trailer and the bit of news about the plot with them having to operate without the back up from the rest of the IMF organisation, how is this different to every other movie in the series (except maybe 2 - though the less said about that the better) ?

I was thinking maybe a film about how such an elite organisation seems to end up with so many traitors and agents turning bad might be interesting though. It definitely seems to happen an awful lot.

The fact that Simon Pegg seems to be playing such a major non-comedic role in this makes me happier than even Bird directing.

That's the one disappointment to me right now, that fact the plot seems to re-use the same as the previous three films: the IMF betrayed from within. But I am having faith in Brad Bird right now.

The fact that this pre-release thread is getting so little activity so far in itself speaks volumes.

Brad Bird talks about shooting on IMAX.

Everyone who saw the preview bits all seemed to be wowed by them from what I read. And they were pushing this hard during the Sunday night football game.

I am looking forward to this, but the plot looks to be a ripoff of the first movie.

If any franchise needed a reboot it's this one. Tom Cruise should have bowed out gracefully and let us have someone else like Tom Hardy.

I think people are now just throwing around the word "reboot" without actually thinking about its applicability. These films are all vehicles for Cruise and his image (one of the most tiring things in the world is listening to his co-stars dutifully blather on about how "he does all these crazy stunts", "has so much energy", etc), outside of that, these films are little more than exercises in FX and stunt choreography.

Actually, they work wonderfully as Tom Cruise workout videos. There's that whole chunk near the end of the third film where I couldn't help but think, "Wow, this guy is in FANTASTIC shape."

Yeah ! the promo is really great.I am quite exited to see this movie.Hope it would be an amazing bang by Tom.

What, the one great one? I have no problem with this.

Brian DePalma is my most favorite Director and I LOVE his Mission : Impossible because it wasn't Bondian spy bullshit with people shooting machine guns at each other through walls. Don't get me wrong, I also love Goldeneye and Casino Royale but one of the things that made the first M:I a classic was that it was played as a SUSPENSE-THRILLER as opposed to an action movie. M:I-2 was fucking garbage and Woo was basically parodying himself by that point. M:I-3 was TV movie level trash, typical of Abrams.

Now, I know that everyone here likes to slobber Brad Bird's knob for his animation work but he's never Directed a feature before. It also doesn't help that, ONCE AGAIN, Ethan Hunt is framed for something while the trailer shows buildings exploding and missiles heading for some city. This does not endear M:I-4 to me nor does the stupid "Ghost Protocol" subtitle or Jeremy Renner who I can't stand. To bad they didn't make him Ethan's secret long lost brother Mike Hunt. I have no idea why Cruise hasn't courted Steven Soderbergh into doing one of these as his Ocean's 11 movies, well, at least the first and third, are EXACTLY how a M:I movie should be.

He's... never... directed... a feature... before?

How the fuck do The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille not qualify as "features"?

Oh. I see. A "animation's for kids, nyeh!" snob.

Live action feature! Happy now? Not the same thing as making cartoons, in case you didn't know.

Oh this guy, in the last hour, has carved himself out as the worst fucking poster on this board. I know you're new, but there's nothing worse than people being totally ignorant, yet still pushing on as if they know everything. Gabe might have his odd moments, but at least he knows what he's talking about most of the fucking time.

Yeah, Bird has displayed no understanding of how to frame an action sequence and obviously has no understanding of the subtle nuances of compelling characters and likeable plots.

He's just made 'cartoons' after all.

I do know, actually. I've been an animation fan since childhood, and I've actually STUDIED animated filmmaking to a certain degree.

Yeah, it's different, but animation still requires a lot of the same skills for a live-action feature. Bird has shown time and again he's got those chops.

Sigh....... in a medium where EVERYTHING can be controlled down to the second. The reality of shooting a 150 million dollar, live action spy flick where you've been hired by the star as opposed to generating the material yourself, is kinda different. Furthermore, since you're going into semantics, I'm a fan of Ralph Bakshi and although I love Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic, very adult oriented material, I still consider them "cartoons" because that is what they are.

Is it just me, or has PK found her soulmate?

Bakshi is not at all comparable, you're fighting the wrong argument on whether this will or won't be good.

Again, I realize that. But I still say Bird has enough pure skill and talent to successfully transition into live-action.

And wow you could not have picked a worse example than Bakshi. I fucking hate that "ZOMG CARTOONS WITH BLOOD AND TITS AND SWEARING!" hack.

You know, this is the reason why CHUD has the reputation of being filled with a bunch of elitist assholes. As per usual, someone comes in with a different opinion, argues their position in detail and is first mocked by shitheads (that can't make a constructive counter argument) who think that their post count adds inches to their dick or invalidates everyone else opinion before instigating a flamewar and then banning that person. I can't wait until this shithole closes down. The only drawback is that you'll then flood AICN just like those two pedophiles Beaks and Nordling.

The argument is that you think Bird will do a great job based on the fact that he's written and Directed a few animated movies while the REALITY is that he's never made a live action movie let alone one of such a huge scale not to mention the fact that he didn't write it. My argument is sound, you're just being an obtuse cunt.

Do you get that Sean??? Do you???? This guys rockin "REALITY" here man.

You can't argue with it dude, it's science.

Wow, calling people who disagree with you cunts REALLY gets us on your side!

And another person gets the "Ignore" button...

I think I may keep him off ignore until the eventual meltdown - that'll be too good to miss methinks.

I think if this film turns out to be bad, its because of the script and the weight of its star. Not with his direction, which I imagine is going to be solid. He knows action and characters, which, in a film like this, is about all you can do without collapsing inwards. The production concerns on a film like this are huge, not playing it safe would be the stupidest thing he could do, as I imagine this is something he wants to pull off with enough success to finance other more personal films.

Edit: You've already called me a cunt in the Transformers video game thread, so you've ruined the impact of it.

Did you see him ranting about Tom Hardy being overrated over in the Dark Knight Rises thread? Methinks the meltdown has already happened.

How am I supposed to respond to a piece of shit who's done nothing but attack me? I'm here to talk movies and if you can present a compelling counter argument, great, but if you're going to make snide remarks then you can fuck yourself.

You could start by being less of a blow hard and not toss around your misinformed opinions as fact. From your behavior in the mere hours of signing up, you can across as a thoroughly unpleasant person.

Talk ABOUT movies. Don't talk AT movies.

18 years to finish school? Things are making sense now.

Catholic daycare, E.C.E., Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, Grade 1 to 8 and then four years of Catholic High School. Until I was 18. That's the system we have here. You wouldn't understand this, being a fucking moron and all. But you live in a former penal colony and you're ancestors were most likely the dregs of society and mentally degenerate, so your incomprehension is understandable.
