187. The Roger Moore BOND films

images.jpg

"Slide whistle" can only be appreciated by kids and the Moore BONDs were all about "slide whistle".

If you grew up in the 80s, you'll remember that Saturday nights on ABC belonged to BOND & the perfect entry points into the franchise for kids under 10 are the Moore BONDs. For myself at that age, the earlier films felt a bit starchy & slow & Connery came off a bit too cold & adult, something that I couldn't appreciate until much later. But Moore's warm & easy-going Bond, combined with the 70s sci-fi Q tech & the goofy, action figure ready rogue's gallery & bad guy bases made Bond easily accessible to my Star Wars addled brain. For the under 10 set, the Moore films' "Saturday morning cartoon come to life" tone is gold.

188. The Secret of NIMH (1982)

For one hot minute Don Bluth was kicking Disney's ass. Exciting and vibrant animation makes the classic children's story come alive. I showed this one to my little cousin and I was overjoyed to see her fall for it in the same way I did as a kid.

1989

Budget: $46m

Gross: $8m

Arguably Gilliam's best & most accessible film, this thing tanked hard but quality had little to do with it's failure. I saw this recently & it's fun as hell. The rare Gilliam where everything clicks.

Your son's new favourite movie. "Carousel" might be a bit much for kids under 10 but for those older than that, Logan's Run is a great step up into slightly more mature sci-fi, removed from the Star Wars sandbox.

Definitely another one of those "determine your child's sexual orientation" films:

191. Monkey Business (1952) d. Howard Hawks

A silly Screwball that plays great for kids, as an accidental mix up has chemist Cary Grant and his wife, Ginger Rogers both drinking water laced with chemicals - chemicals that, with hilarious results, revert them to their younger selves.

192. Bringing Up Baby (1938) d. Howard Hawks

If the kids dig MONKEY BUSINESS, next it's time to show 'em Hawks' masterpiece. Just a perfect comedy.

193. Duck Soup.

The Marx Brothers' comedy was often described as 'anarchic', but the this is the only film where they actually destroy a government. There's no love story to bog things down, the music is unintrusive, and the pantomime is universal:

195. Matinee (1993)

John Goodman is an all-star in this tribute to the William Castle movies of the 1960s. Another gem from Joe Dante.

196) Nanny McPhee

A sort of darker and modern Mary Poppins, this movie is actually funny and pretty sweet and Emma Thompson is great as the title character.
