BENICIO POSSIBLY CLINGING ON FOR STAR TREK 2

Is Kirk battling The Wolfman in Star Trek 2?

Let the baseless speculation begin! Who does Del Toro dress up as in Star Trek 2?

Let's make the most of this, since the deal might be done before the weekend's out. Before our fun's spoiled, I nominate Harry Mudd as the villain in the next Star Trek.

After WOLFMAN, it seems likely to me he is to portray a Klingon

I think anything's in play at this point. The klingon look would be tough thing to nail for the next one, since there's such disparity between the klingon appearance between TOS and TNG. But I dig the klingon design from the deleted scene in the last one.

I'd love for them to do an entirely new Klingon look, 1) to exercise some creativity and 2) to make the purists' heads explode.

TNG, shmee NG, this is in the time of Kirk and co. Nailing the klingons will be easy peasy if that's how they want to roll.

I love that Benicio's on board.

MichaelM, I would love to see Benicio Del Toro as...Klingon Commander Kor!  The Klingon originally protrayed by...John Colicos!

Who doesn't want to see that Del Toro scowl under updated Klingon makeup? If that's what he's being lined up for, I approve.

I hope Benico isn't playing Khan. I accepted the time traveling just to work in Leonard Nimoy. Seeing him interact with the new Kirk and Spock gave the new cast credibility. I hope the next film tells new stories instead of just redoing old ones.

I'm pretty sure they stated quite awhile ago that Khan would not be appearing in this film.  Granted they could have changed their minds, but I doubt it.  I'm sure they will inevitably give into temptation at some point in this reboot series and use Khan.  I think they are smart enough not to do it just yet though.

I'm of the opinion that they shouldn't just rework things for the sake of reworking them. The later Klingon makeup is an absolute home run, and it doesn't even clash that badly with the original show. Is going back to guys with fu manchu mustaches and spray-on tans really necessary? Unless they can find a really brilliant new look for the Klingons, why muck around with it?

The first thing I thought of when I saw this news was: "Oh no, not Khan", because Del Toro and Ricardo Montalban have the Spanish connection (even though the character was supposed to be Sikh). I hope my suspicion will turn out wrong. I also don't like the idea of these movies following that tired old formula of just trying to find an accomplished actor to play a villain and pitting him against the crew. That sort of thinking didn't help many of the '90s Star Trek movies (Christopher Plummer was good, but he was absent for much of the movie, so the movie's success didn't depend on the villain, while Malcolm McDowell and F. Murray Abraham were wasted in movies with shitty scripts).

Eric Bana was completely extraneous in the last movie. His performance was fine, but like Tom Hardy in "Star Trek: Nemesis", he was just an excellent actor, doing a terrific job of intensely playing a shitty, poorly written character. These movies work best when the foundation is a smart idea for a story that has emotional weight, not when everything is built around your standard menacing villain. I hope this casting doesn't signal another dull villain-of-the-week story on the horizon. Benicio's acting style seems too low-key to play a Klingon, since Klingons tend to be loud, bombastic, larger-than-life characters (although there are exceptions like Kruge and Worf), so if he's not playing Khan, I have trouble imagining what other established Star Trek species he might play. I could see him as a Romulan, but I don't think they'll go back to that well so soon.

The Prankster, To me the Klingons of Star Trek TOS are far cooler.  I liked the redesign, but this is back to Kirk's time, so that is the design they should use.  Maybe there could be a look that...combines the TOS and TNG Klingons!

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

Not to re-visit known places, to seek out characters we've already seen a dozen times and the same old civilizations, just to boldly go where promotional marketing will be easier.

OMG! DelToro as Mudd would be awesome. He can be a manic actor and not all scowly.  But his scowls would make Harry Mudd a real villian and not a cartoon. Pimp with a heart of gold, or a first class slaver... of Orion women.

I thought Eric Bana was fucking banal in the last movie. He seemed to be playing the role hammy but didn't know how to have fun with it and came off more awkward and annoying, combined with terrible writing he's the worst antagonist of the films (not counting non-corporeal beings).

Also, bumpy foreheads isn't a TNG thing, that was all done in the TOS films before any of the spin-offs. Get the facts right people [adjusts specs].

Wasn't there Klingon footage from the first J J film that got cut? Is that what some of you are referring to terms of the Klingon makeup or only the Star Trek movies/Next Generation and beyond TV Series? Or are they more or less the same?

The Klingon make up in STTNG in my opinion is the "real" Klingon look. Plus, it looks fantastic. I love Worf's forehead!

Here's the deleted scene with the Klingons, in case you were wondering. They keep the helmets on, so we don't really know if they've kept the ridged foreheads (though they sort of suggest it).

Given that Trek 2009 keeps stuff like Admiral Archer and the Cardassians (and apparently, in a script line that was cut or revised, the Borg), I don't think they're allergic to the idea of incorporating post-TNG ideas. At the very least, given their redesign of the Romulans, I'm sure any new Klingon design will be fairly elaborate.

It'd be a shame if they went back to the "yellow peril" characterization of the Klingons from the original show, though. Again, post-TOS Klingons are way, way more interesting, one of the few elements of Trek where I think most people would agree this was so.

Archer was mentioned in TREK 09?

Yup. Scotty was exiled to the ice moon because he transported Archer's dog...and it did not end well.

I agree..Making him as Khan would just be a boring out, one that I don't want to see.  I'll watch the other Star Trek 2 if I want a Khan fix.

Kor appeared in the 2009 film, during the deleted "Klingon-cruisers-capture-the-disabled-Narada" sequence at the film's beginning, but he was played by some other guy. That said, they could still recast the part (or any of the other TOS Klingon-roles) with Benicio, if they wanted to.

I'm curious if The Borg will ever show up. They're the most popular Star Trek villain, but if they show up, that'd really mess with Trekkie's heads about continuity.  I know if I was a producer of this series, I'd push for The Borg. (I think Abrams could do a really cool take on them)

Princess Kate, The Prankster, No way.  TOS Klingons are far cooler than the TNG era ones.  I prefer TOS and The Animated Series with DS9 third.  Benicio as Harry Mudd though, that would be cool.

The writers already said quite awhile back that Khan would not be appearing in this film.  As I've said before, I'm down with Benecio as the villain.  While I'll certainly take his brooding scowly self these days as a villain, I'd be lying if I wouldn't rather see this guy show up.....

I wish I could find some more examples, but Benecio was fucking electric as the henchman Dario in Licence To Kill.

They could use that line too directed at Spock concerning Uhura.

An article at AICN says he's to play leader of the Gorn.

At least the film is being shot for 3D, not like I'll see it..but it'll look far better then the converted crap.  Also, it'll be interesting to see what JJ does with 3D.

I'm pretty sure that is just AICN trying to start a ridiculous rumor for fun.

Something fishy coming from AICN? Surely you jest.

They were making a joke.

But I really wanna see Chris Pine make a home made cannon.

Oh man, that's it: cast Clint Howard in the EXACT SAME ROLE he played on the original show. Bald cap, Tranya, the whole routine.

Wait, are you guys saying Clint Howard doesn't normally have a facial deformity?
