TOWER HEIST Post-Release Discussion

Anyone else catch this yet? I found it to be... decent enough. It has its moments (Murphy's initiation challenge to the rest of the gang), and the actual heist is pretty imaginative and exciting), but I was surprised how few laughs there were. I'm not sure how much value Ratner really gets out of his leads: For the most part, a rather serious Stiller keeps his usual schtick under wraps, and likewise, while Murphy's funny, he's given surprisingly few opportunities to showboat.

I heard that Murphy is back on form in this one. Any truth to that?

It doesn't make you want to drink heavily while sobbing and watching Raw afterwards, so it's a least a step up over the rest of his recent comedic efforts.

I'm of the opinion that Eddie's never stopped being funny, he's just had a non existent approach to quality control. But yeah, I reckon it's safe to say that this is his funniest role since Bowfinger. It's a very unselfish performance, too: despite him sharing above-title billing with Stiller, he's very much part of the ensemble.

I actually thought Murphy was the weakest part of the film.  He was just doing a pale, 10th-generation version of Billy Ray Valentine.  Broderick and Pena steal the move completely from him.   Even Tea Leoni, who I usually find annoying, was pretty great here.

It's very mainstream and slight, but I enjoyed it.  It's a solid matinee.

Fucking Broderick steals the movie from Eddie Murphy?!

One of the year's most boring movies. The first twenty minutes convince you that this movie's going to have some class rage, and some interesting story dynamics. Then it's just boring connect-the-dots, and there are ZERO character revelations after the first half hour. The heist has one sorta nifty stunt that's botched by Ratner's complete lack of understanding as far as building tension and creating on-screen geography. It all ends in a weird compromised shrug as well, somewhere between "We won!" and "There were real life consequences!" Five minutes after it ended, I had trouble remembering ANYTHING that happened.
