What about a Draft?

Thread Starter

So, what with all the interesting times going on here at Chud, I was thinking a Draft might not be a bad idea. They get people talking and focus the conversation, and they're fun. It's been a while too.

I'd be down for whatever, but my proposal is, simply, a Movie Draft. No decades, no genres, the only stipulation is that it's a movie.

For all the time I've been here, I've never participated in one of these.  So how do drafts work?

A bunch of people pick movies in a given category and some poor bastard has to keep track of all of them.

You go in a particular order, and then the next round it's reversed.

Ah, well, it's basically like Fantasy Football with movies. Everyone gets a draft time, then they pick their first available choice. Some people attempt to put together a cohesive theme, like they're scheduling a festival, while others prefer to pick the best available, regardless of how they match up together. The spur really intense conversations in the threads about such topics as Great Movies VS Favorite Movies (which is always less clear cut than you might expect), what is underpraised or overpraised, and where everyone's particular aesthetics overlap (excessive threats of physical violation are fairly common). And there's always some seriously obscure titles pulled out of it. Drafts tend to add no less than a dozen titles to my netflix cue. The 70s one made me add over fifty. They're fun, and you'd be a fucking beast in them, Nooj.

And you get bonus points if all the movies you pick feature characters who died and then got resurrected.

I've never done any kind of draft, so I may need some handholding... but I'm in.

Just imo, I do think you need to limit the choices in some way.  I mean, there is something to be said for personal themes built in to your picks, like programming a mock festival, if you will (e.g. the resurrection one)-- but cast too wide a net you're rarely going to get people snatching your pick right before you choose, which is part of what makes it fun.

Yeah, I could see that. I'm amenable to whatever.

That resurrection draft was mine, and I'm emboldened by you remembering it.

I'm in.  I was just thinking about this.  What about picking an era, like the '80s or something, rather than general movies?

In the old Innocent X days, didn't we post one draft pick per day?  And then kept a separate thread for complete lists?

There's a whole bunch of drafts in the archives somewhere. A search should turn them up. I remember the Horror Draft being particularly fun and wide ranging.

I think, as far as the decade drafts were concerned, we were due for the '50s or a re-do of the '00s now that the decade was complete.

I'd be all for just about whatever period or genre folks want to do. 00s was one I missed, so I'd selfishly be down for that. I was just testing the waters here, but I'll go ahead and say I'll do some moderate organizational running of the draft, i.e., coming up with a schedule and opening up the thread in the morning. But that's only if enough folks are interested, and we get an interesting Draft Topic. What's necessary to do a proper one? 20 or so?

I have no idea what any of you are talking about, but I really like watching internet punch ups, so I'm in.

I still think a one-hour television drama draft would be epic.  Everything from Gunsmoke to American Horror Story is eligible.

I don't like the idea of a basic "Movie draft" because I like arguing over who got better picks. So we need a hook.

Best sports movies?

Actor/Actress Draft?

Best Picture Winners Draft?

Or we could do a decade draft where each person gets a pick. Let's say twenty people participate. First pick must be something from the fifties. Second pick must be the sixties. We go until the '00's, and then snake it, and the seventh pick is also 00's, eighth pick is '90's, and so on, and so on. Did I explain that?

Also, I think we did a horror draft a long while back, would love doing that again.

I think what makes a draft fun as a game, rather than as just an exercise in list-making (not that there's anything wrong with that), is not only that there is some limitation set, but that everyone is basically drafting from the same group of things.  So, while a genre draft sets certain limitations, given the ambiguous boundaries of any given genre, not everyone is necessarily drawing from the same pool.

I love this.

That could be interesting.

Did we ever do a straight Comedy Movie Draft?

I feel wary of doing a decade draft not hosted by Kirby, but I'm in. Just let me know the theme!

Kirby's the master.  I would love it if he'd do one.

I'm up for another draft.

May I suggest a draft consisting of English language films not shot in America. Basically any film with English dialog not shot on the North or Central American Continent. (Canada, USA, and Mexico are out of bounds)

I have never participated, but I have read them. I would like to give her a go.

God, I would love if Kirby would show up and do it. But barring that, I think a simple theme is the easiest, and I like the dwindling quality, so I'm hesitant on the 50s/60s/70s one.

Since the original one was in 07, and some great films got left out, another 00's draft would be cool. However, I'm down for whatever you cook up Arjen.

Holiday movies, all encompassing. It's coming up on Christmas, after all. Don't limit it to Christmas, though...allow Easter, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Arbor day, 4th of July, etc. I'd omit Halloween as that's already been covered by the Horror Draft.

You keep practicing Quick Draw.

[See above as an example of the joy of talking trash in a draft. Where "Fuck You!" is a compliment.]

I'd be interested. My original Aught's draft leaned heaviliy on the early years. I think 3 out of my 5 picks were from 2001. It'd be interesting to see where I go with it given the amazing output in the end of the decade.

Why don't we do the Aughts again to sort of ease us back into drafts, esp. for folks that have never done it?

Thread Starter

Let's call it for the Aughts. Everyone cool with starting the Monday after Thanksgiving?

By my count, that's thirteen participants up in here. I'd like to set it at twenty unofficially.

The Aughts? I'm in.

Now I have a week to think of a theme only to watch someone like Chris or Justin pick Suspiria or Snatcher and fuck me up for life.

But we're cool.

Sure, I'll do it, though I'll probably be posting late every day. Five movies, right?

Yup, and usually a bonus pick.

I am so in. The 90s draft was one of the best experiences I've had here. Plus it spawned some great discussion.

I am intrigued and would definitely participate.

How does this work?

I'm in.  I like the opportunity to pick an entirely different list from the last time.

Do we need an official sign-up thread?

I'll keep the master list, if need be.  I think I did that last time.  One time, anyway.

I'll make an official Draft Thread/FAQ/Sign Up/etc. My plan is to keep this as simple as possible.
