Twists that never came

Thread Starter

So, on a whim, I popped in Superbad and besides being reminded at how funny it is, I also remembered that the first time I saw it in the theater, I expected that Seth (Jonah Hill) would confess to Evan that he was gay. At the time, I thought he was trying way too hard to make Evan and McLovin think he was into sex with girls and his thing about vaginas looking gross just by themselves in porn and his obsession with drawing penises made me suspicious about his sexuality.

So, how about you? Did you ever think a twist or revelation about a character would come but never did? Am I alone in thinking that about Seth in Superbad?

Yes! In MIAMI VICE I was convinced that Ciran Hinds FBI agent was the much talked about mole, and that Farrell and Foxx would have to return to deal with him before the movie was over. I'm still sort of convinced that was the case, something about his performance and the way he gave them the assignment. Anyway, I was very surprised when the movie ended before Hinds and the main head drug dealer were handled. Was it being saved for a sequel? Or did I just have unreasonable expectations?

EDIT: and Cameron, I thought the same thing in SUPERBAD, I now remember

Cold Creek Manor. I remember paying to see that in the theater (!) and hoping that something interesting would happen. But no, just Stephen Dorff acting crazy.

By the way, I'm new to the boards but I've been a fan of the site for a while, so hello everyone.

ALIEN

When she trying to escape, she drops the carrier with the cat in it.  Remember how the alien stares at the cat?  Yeah, it must have done SOMETHING to the cat, right?

Guess not.

Couple of prequel comments here, not meant to start yet another Star Wars argument:

After watching The Phantom Menace, I swore for years that Padme's double was a clone and that would somehow tie into the Clone Wars.

After watching Attack of the Clones, I expected some revelation about Sifa-Diyas. Anything.

Before Revenge of the Sith I swore up and down Palpatine would admit to having created Anakin via the Force. He all but does, but no dice.

Dunno about it being a twist per se, but after seeing Contagion,

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

After it became clear Soderbergh wasn't going to the route I wish SOMEONE would in a movie like this, and let the virus win, I kept expecting the vaccine to not work or cause some sort of side effect, like Jude Law says. Never happens. It kinda hurts the ending, really.

I have to echo all those prequel mentions. It's bizarre that those ended up as red herrings with no pay off. Really speaks to shoddy construction that plagued those films on every level

My nine year old self was certain that the shaving cream can in Jurassic Park was going to play a huge role in whatever sequels might have followed.

Ah, but I believe a new video game is based around that can.

Watching Law Abiding Citizen recently, I could swear the Sarah character was the accomplice working with Clyde. She kept talking about a boyfriend, Chester, that's never on-screen. Even after her death, when Chester sends Nick an e-mail, I thought it would turn out to be Clyde...

You didn't and I'm pretty damn sure Foxx & Farrell were signed for sequels that we will obviously never get.

The fact that the early trailers made it seem as though it might have a supernatural element to it didn't help things.  Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I'm pretty sure I got a strong haunted vibe from the trailer to that piece of shit.

I've seen cats scare off dogs, snakes, foxes, bobcats, deer, and even a bear.  If anyone was molested or abused off screen, it was probably the xenomorph.

THIS!  I was dead certain that she was in on it and for awhile I even believed that she had faked her death.

I thought it (amongst other deep philosophical and plot-related truths) would be revealed in MATRIX part 3 that the Merovingian was a previous "The One", considering the subtext of his name.

And that Darth Sidious and Emperor Palpatine were NOT the same character. "Can't any of the Jedi see the future? Senator Palpatine = Emperor Palpatine!!! It's too obvious!!! Lucas has to have something up his sleeve. A clone maybe??? Why hide his face??? WTF?" Ackham's Razor.

And before credits rolled on THE HAPPENING, M Night S would have stopped the film, Gremlins 2-style, to confess how dumb even he thought the flick was. Whatta twist!
