Cannot remember...

I distinctly remember growing up, I had seen this old looking space movie where I think an astronaut goes to some planet and I'm not sure if he's lost or just the only one left, anyway he encounters some creature and for the longest time you assume it's male, but then it gives birth and the creature dies but the man raises the creature baby and it speaks english and everything. Definitely and older movie maybe 80s?

The film you're thinking of is Enemy Mine from 1985 with Dennis Quaid and Louis Gosset Jnr.

 

...and it's actually very, very good. A real under-rated gem.
