In the interest of keeping this place going, I thought i would start a Lively discussion here on the forum (no, not Blake har har har). It was a couple of years ago that I originally read this on the site, but there was an idea put forth that we could see 2 or more directors tackling the same material and their films being released side by side. If this idea ever did get put to use, what do you think would happen? Would it spark a renaissance of positive, spirited criticism of film, or would it be relegated to a box office dick measuring contest? Personally, I would like to see one instance of it out of morbid curiosity, but I'm eager to hear what other people think about this or whatever else. Let's light this bitch up!

I was very excited to see the American Reunion movie. I saw American Pie just after college and remembered it was quite funny. Jim, Michelle, Oz, Heather, Stifler reunite for their high school...

I've definitely considered this idea before, but I thought that the ONLY variable would be the director. That would mean the same script, same cast, and same crew. Of course, this approach is fundamentally flawed since SOMEBODY has to direct in that situation first. Whoever makes the film afterwards would be contaminated with the previous director's choices!

what if they took it further and had completely different casts and crews? i think it would be interesting to see how each director saw the material and who they felt would bring the best performance to the table. i do wonder if the fact that if the directors knew that pretty much the exact same movie was being made, would it free them up creatively or would it turn into oneupsmanship?

Well yeah. I got what you were saying. But the reason that I pushed it towards the director being the only variable is because I'm not sure how different this situation would be from a remake if all other things weren't equal.
That said, going along with your idea... I don't think it would result in one-upsmanship if the two productions were well separated from each other. But that would also depend on how aware the directors are of the other's previous work.
I think any self-respecting director would just make the film they'd want to make. Whether or not they're upping their creative game, they probably wouldn't be aware of it.
But then again, how much creativity would they bring to something that was started like a horserace? They'd probably just treat it as an opportunity to push their technical creativity as opposed to expending any real creative mojo on this. Who would want to bring their A-game to a feature-length movie contest?
Basically what I'm saying is... I have no clue.
