EDDIE MURPHY QUITS OSCAR GIG ALONG WITH RATNER - Page 2

Crystal is a good choice, he's a good host.  He gets it.  He's the safest possible desperation move they could make at this point, but it's also a shame.  I would prefer Hugh Jackman.  He has a charm and enthusiasm that's the same sterile thing as Crystals, just fresher, newer.  Honestly my first choice is Gervais.  He's HILARIOUS and would absolutely kill the gig, and I think every body knows it and that's why it will never happen.

Nice call Freeman, Gervaise would kill. His turn on Curb was the highlight of this past season. But his performance would be judged harshly for the same reason Letterman's was.

Crystal's greatest asset is his ability to work an audience. That skill really helps a show flow and if there's a train wreck all the better cuz it gives him something to work off.

The only time I ever enjoyed the Oscar's was when Letterman hosted. He was on to  the the absudity and the ridiculous amount of ego in the room. That is why he was vilified. Billy Crystal is loved by the Oscars because he plays into the ego of the crowd. He treats them as royalty which they feel they are.  Hugh Jackman is the perfect host for the Oscars, he is congenial, talented, and good looking. The Academy would have him every year if the ratings were good enough. Too bad most people cant sit through 3 hours of his breathless enthusiasm without going into a diabetic coma. Maybe they can get Andy Samberg to host the awards as Hugh Jackman, that might be worth checking out.

As for Billy Crystal, the last things I remember him being entertaining in are When Harry Met Sally and Running Scared. His selection only illustrates how desperate and tone deaf the Academy is at this point.

Are you a troll? An Oscars host is good because he is "good looking?" I think, like, a hundred years of Oscars hosts who aren't traditionally attractive completely invalidate this retarded opinion. Hugh Jackman was entertaining and all -- in a good way rather than how Franco's profound indifference was entertaining -- but this is stupid. The Oscars are what they've always been, and if you think they suck now then you must necessarily think they have always sucked. It's a pageant, and you need to get behind the fact that it is a big self-congratulatory shallow circle-jerk if you're going to enjoy it. And if you can't, I don't really think you like movies anyway, since so much of what they are is epitomized by the Oscars.

I feel like this is a profound overreaction to the post you're commenting on, which I happened to agree with 100%. Jackman would make a good host for all the reasons he mentioned. For the record, Gervais would make a good one too. I'm of the opinion that the Oscars do suck, and I don't even watch them anymore. Additionally, outside of PRINCESS BRIDE, I've never found Crystal funny

To question someone's love of movies because they find the Oscars shallow and insufferable just is bizarre

Or you can just not watch them at all like I do every year. It's not the Oscars themselves that ultimately irritate me, it's my Facebook feed that night. Idiots who have no real comprehension of film who tune in and fucking gloat when their picks (and these are always the really obvious ones) win. "Jeff Bridges won. Called it. lol. Work tomorrow. Night everyone!"

Thanks Kate, you pretty much said what I would of. Yes I do love movies, and yes I pretty much do hate the Oscars.

I do have favorite actors, directors and movies. I do want my favorites to win. I just cant sit through the ceremony where the awards are handed out.

...but who exactly is making you sit through it in the first place?

Fair point, I am taking your message as 'if you dont like the oscars, why the fuck are you in this thread?"

I guess the reason would be because I do like movies, and I am actually interested in who wins, but I find the actual show intolerable.

So I end up enjoying the hell out of everyone's year end lists, and the movie discussion that those generate. I just wish there was an awards show that I could enjoy.  Since I feel that there may be people who feel the same way I do regarding the Oscars reading this board and perhaps even this thread I thought I would throw my opinion out there and see if it generated any useful or interesting discussion.

eh, my last good memory of the Oscars was Robin Williams singing Blame Canada. That was brilliance. Now-a-days I usually just end up here the next day reading the winners/run down.

Apologies 3nnui, that was a bit of an overreaction earlier. Don't know what came over me.

The show is a spectacle. It's worth watching just for the blown-up excess and the melting pot of famous personalities it represents. And the little moments, the ones that are unscripted and spontaneous, are almost always funny or memorable enough to keep me watching. I remember last year one of the Oscar producers was doing a brief backstage interview before the show started, and as he was talking Spielberg suddenly dipped into the frame and jokingly dabbed his forehead with a cloth, as if to remove sweat, and then disappeared again right after. I suppose something like that is amusing since it shows us a little bit of the reality, the humanness, behind the insular and image-oriented Hollywood. In a way, maybe watching the Oscars makes us feel like we're more a part of that world, which is certainly a seductive one.

I have a hard time envisioning any other reasons why someone would watch the Oscars, actually.

I watch the Oscars (sometimes) because it's like watching a freak show.  Bunch of delusional elitists with too much plastic surgery.  Joan Rivers is their leader.

Sounds like you're describing Bruce Campbell in ESCAPE FROM LA

I would love to see many other people/pieces of felt host rather than Crystal, but I'm still going to watch because I'm a film fan & that's the biggest night every year.  I thought Jon Stewart could have been a viable option (awards show experience, recognizable name, etc.).

Realistically, Crystal is the perfect host for the Oscars. He's well-liked in the industry, has old-school hosting chops and nails that cheeky-but-inoffensive tone that lets the celebs laugh at themselves yet still keep a tone of general reverence about proceedings. Sure, it's boring as batshit for the audience but since when has this whole palaver been about us?
