THE DEATH OF FLASH

It's being heralded around the web: Jobs was, once again, right

Jobs, from THOUGHTS ON FLASH:

New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind.

Adobe today:

Quote:
"HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively," wrote Winokur. "This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms.
Tech blogger Dan Frommer argues that Adobe's move "ultimately signals the end of Flash."

From Frommer's blog:

Quote:
And it’s a big strategic/emotional loss: The fact that Adobe’s ownership of one of the web’s most popular platforms is declining in importance. And that it looks bad — like it lost a war of words with the Apple camp. (Steve Jobs would have enjoyed this, no?)

People mocked Jobs, and his insistence that FLASH would be left behind. Now Adobe has conceded defeat, and iOS's lack of flash can only be seen as an incredibly forward thinking innovation on APPLE's part

Dick-riding Zombie Steve Jobs!

But yeah, he was totally right. Of course. I can now make the webmaster at my work eat crow once again. Poor PC-using fool.

I'd love to see the anti-APPLE folks respond to this one. IMHO, not only did Jobs predict this eventuality, he brought it about. APPLE sells an iPad every 1.5 seconds, and the iPhone has a huge market share of full mobile web browsing phones. If people wanted their sites to get out to that market, they had to abandon FLASH. Adobe also totally failed, as Jobs said they would, at getting FLASH to be more stable and less of a battery hog

I'm doing quiet little imaginary cartwheels of joy right now. The schadenfreude is so fresh I can taste it

From the interview with Walt Mossberg at D8 2010:

Walt: What if people demand Flash. What if they say the iPad is crippled without Flash?

Jobs: We’re just trying to make great products. We don’t think Flash makes a great product, so we’re leaving it out. Instead, we’re going to focus on technologies that are in ascendancy. If we succeed, people will buy them and if we don’t they won’t….And, so far, I have to say, people seem to be liking the iPad

Here's a good article on why Android users like me should be pleased:

He's got a point. The BBC app is awful. It stutters and is completely out of sync. Youtube works fine though. And flash takes up a chunk of memory and won't move to sd card.cool.gif

Kate, read your own article "Adobe Halts Flash Plug-in for Mobile Platforms"

1. Halt and dead are two different things

2. Its just on mobile devices, in fact Flash 11 was launched recently

Flash will hang on for another five years or so, but with this news, it's coming death is assured. The future of the web is mobile, and flash just gave up on mobile web. As of today, everyone needs to start building their sites for a future where HTML5 is the standard

That is the opinion of the tech community, not just me

How about this, you obsessive mouthbreathing troglodyte:

I don't own an IPad. I don't own an Iphone. I don't give a shit about Steve Jobs. All I care about is that my computer (a fucking brilliant little piece of Pc goodness) works, that things work on the computer. Your little cartwheels of joy make me sick to my stomach that I-

I can't. I just can't. I just can't do this. You make me want to do bad things. Kate, I'm sorry - I just can't handle it. I have to put you on ignore.

If Adobe is such a smart company then why aren't they called Apple?

I honestly feel Steve Jobs just places targets and feels the need to jump ahead of them. His 2 targets, flash and blu-ray, are known for not having full support on his computers and/or iDevices.

To him it's really all business, and the opportunity to create a need for something different.

If Flash was great on a mobile device, there would be no need for the app store. So leaving it out, and then creating an outlet by having people create apps and he takes 30% is just shrewd business. In terms of Flash, it's pretty resource intensive, and he tried to move the industry to move onto things that are more efficient. So props to him on that.

Blu-ray?! Well until bandwidths can catch up, physical media will be here to stay. Also he doesn't want a format to eat into his iTunes HD money. Once again, nothing personal, it's just business. Downloads are the future, and I do take advantage of them more, but only as a secondary option.

Blu-rays still look better than an HD streaming. But for most people the jump in quality from dvd / standard def streaming to HD streaming / download is enough. Bigger than the jump from HD streaming to Blu-ray.
