The Zooey Deschanel backlash continues to baffle me

She's always been an excellent actress, so this recent backlash of hers from the Internet confuses me. Is it just because she keeps getting cast as Manic Pixie Dream Girls (though not all the time, it must be noted)?

 

Also, I've heard she actually gets to deconstruct that Dream Girl thing a bit in 500 Days of Summer, though I haven't seen it yet (want to, though).

She is a really good actress but I think it might be the "precious hipster" routine coupled with her steadfast refusal to be anything close to naked that sets the Zooey dial to "obnoxious" in most people's minds.

...I think Gabe and I might differ on "good movies". Yes, she's been in some crap (The Happening, Yes Man), but she's been in good stuff like Elf or Bridge to Terabithia. So it goes with any actor or actress.

 

And people really bitch about her not being naked in movies? That's incredibly shallow even for the Internet.

We're wading in the ankle deep pool of celebrity image here, of course it's shallow. But it's also entirely likely true.

I don't think anyone reasonable would slag on the star of Yes Man and the limited singer of a gimmicky throwback band for not flashing her minge.

 

Clearly very few of you suffered through her "best friend" turn in "Failure To Launch."

Yeah, I skipped Failure to Launch after Ebert's hilarious review of it. He mentioned Deschanel's work there, but only to contrast it with her apparently much better work in Winter Passing, which had also opened recently.

I like her, but then Deschanel kinda makes me really swoony for reasons I can't help.
