NDA lifted today.
I have a single code that will work to get into the stress test beta weekend over Thanksgiving. I'll offer it to Bob first, if he doesn't want it I'll put it up for grabs.
Anyway, last weekend I played quite a bit and got my Sith Inquisitor to level 16. This was enough playing to get through the starter planet (Korriban in my case), through the faction center and to get my ship and have the ability to fly wherever I wanted at that point. Unfortunately I barely got touched down on my 3rd planet when the beta ended.
The good: The "prologues". Every class has a background story. If the Sith Inquisitor is any indication then these will all be a treat. My story was really ramping up in a big way when the beta ended.
The communication. Yes, it's basically KOTOR or Mass Effect style communication. Yes, it's amazingly fun and your dialogue choices are a treat.
Companions. Great way to allow players to "solo" content that their class might normally have issues with. Glass cannon? Bring along a tank companion and let him take your beating. As an added bonus your companions will react positively or negatively to your conversational choices. Luckily my big alien tank seemed to think there was nothing better than me being an a-hole, and I agreed with him. We both seemed to enjoy me telling people how awesome I was.
Space battles. Really, getting your ship is a really fun change of pace but I enjoyed the additional change of pace of accepting space battle missions.
In general this game was in the best shape of any beta I've seen at this stage of development.
The bad: I've been removed from WoW a couple of years. I can imagine people who are still playing/recently playing it might feel that the missions (quests) are too similar in structure.
Hopefully this will be fixed at release, but in beta it was a nightmare finding your advanced class trainer. Frustrating, not game breaking.
Minor graphical bugs. Again, I anticipate these being ironed out.
Skills for the first 10 levels do not give a good indication of how the advanced classes play out. This was probably my biggest gripe. You go through 10 levels as a Sith Inquisitor and can then choose to be a Sorcerer or Assassin. However, lots of the major skills (like healing) don't exist before level 10. This can be especially frustrating if you do a Flashpoint (instance) where nobody seems to know who should be tanking or healing or what. The Black Talon flashpoint is the main offender here as groups of level 8-10 folks are lining up to get their heads bashed in by content just because they don't really have class defining skills yet.
Anyway, in my opinion the positives were much more than the negatives. I've preordered the game and am excited to see it hit release. Balance didn't seem out of whack, and people were raving about each of the classes. I have high hopes.
