So happy that others are coming around to the "Ratatouille is Pixar's best" camp.
But on the subject of Dreamworks, I dunno... they're getting better, but Megamind fucking SUCKED.

Well, for what it's worth, Merida does appear to wear dresses all through the film, and also be a tomboy who uses weapons.
It's also just a trailer too which is why I still attempt to think positive thoughts for the most part.
It's a shame it looks a lot more trite and girl-rises-above-traditions cliched than first thought. The Disneyfied cutesie celticness is kind of irritating me too, like the designers simply watched Braveheart a bunch of times then nicked the viking character designs from How To Train Your Dragon and stirred.
See, that "Ooh they're ripping off Dragon" annoys the hell out of me. They're not the same damn designs. If you actually look, there's a different style and sense of detail to them.
Yeah, I made the obvious Dragon jokes when I first saw the trailer, but beyond the accents, there really isn't a lot of similarity.
I think the color palette is pretty similar too with certain scenes.
But there seems to be a lot more variety to the styles of human designs in Brave (a mix of roundness and sharp angles). All of the human characters in Dragon were pretty similarly rounded.
Glad to know I'm not the only one...
I dunno about the color palette, though. That might be reaching.
Sure - to you - do you think the average punters going to notice that, or do you think they'll see funny shaped medievil characters and Billy Connollys voice in place of Craig Fergusons?
I dunno, I was hoping for a sense of wonder and awe, a touching beautiful haunting visual tale. I'm obviously a naive idiot. I should have realised I was getting a film that's really Disney first, Pixar second. So we're getting a 'girl power' celtic spin on Mulan - woohoo.
I may just have to watch The Secret Of Kells to clear my palette.

*rolls eyes* Yes, let's judge the tone of the entire film based on one schizophrenic trailer.
That always ends well. Interestingly, Craig Ferguson is actually in this movie too, which I know doesn't help the Dragon comparison. But hey, maybe it'll be a different type of character.

You forgot *groans*, *sighs* and *being a condescending jerk* to go with your "*rolls eyes*"
This is a thread about a trailer - not a film, a trailer - obviously I can't comment on the film as it hasn't been fucking released yet.
So just so I'm clear, would you rather no one comment until the film is in full release (that'll make for an exciting pre-release thread and info announcements) or are you only interested in views that align up with yours at this point? Let me know so I can update my Chrispiderpedia.org for future reference.
Guys, relax. Calm yourselves with some Trey Songz.
I'm surprised the trailer didn't bust out Clannads Theme From Harrys Game in the first half and end with the Dropkick Murphys I'm Shipping Up To Boston. Ugh.

OK, I'm sorry. I just get a little defensive about Pixar sometimes, as they're easily one of my favorite film companies. Your opinion is your opinion, and you have the right to it.
*extends olive branch*
I thought Mulan as well on first viewing, but we'll see. The trailer does seem very cagey about giving away too much of the story, and the snippets about the plot posted earlier definitely sound interesting. It felt to me that since the original teaser was so full of mystery, this trailer's more an attempt to say to people 'Look! It'll gonna be fun, too!' to keep the mainstream audience engaged.
Either way, as a few people have said already, it's way too early to guess too closely. In Pixar we trust, I say.
...and accepted sir.
Look, I'm one of Pixars biggest champions myself, always have been - I just get a little cagey of the cutesie celtic cliched vibe I simply got off the trailer, I loved the teaser.
I get a little funny when celtic mythology gets adapted to things like this as well, as its not only a historical culture I've always been fascinated by, but I'm even using it as inspiration for my own creativity, so you're not the only one who might be a little over-sensitive here. Mea Culpa.
I really do think the trailer's partly at fault with more than a few reactions here, including mine. You hear about an original property from Pixar, get that really atmospheric teaser, and it creates a certain amount of expectations on what the film looks like. When you go from that to a trailer that's obviously showcasing the humor*, and commerical aspects and it just seems weird. Despite the fact that Pixar's as commerical as it is artistic and all of this should be readily expected from them.
Note: And I'm not saying I'm some dour person who hates the idea that there's supposed to be sections of the movie you laugh at. I just figured it'd be less faux-celtic, and Mulany.
Apology exchanged and accepted, Rain Dog. Anyway, they definitely made a smart decision replacing Reese Witherspoon with Kelly Macdonald as the voice of Merida. Not only is Kelly actually Scottish, she's definitely a more interesting talent.
I don't think it's the mere presence of humor, but that, in this case, it feels anachronistic. All of Pixar's other films have been pretty much modern (save for the flashbacks in Up), so this kind of humor doesn't elicit much of a response, even if it's being delivered by toys or bugs or fish. But transpose it into what is clearly a pseudo-medieval setting, and it's bound to raise more eyebrows than normal.
double post apologies.

It didn't feel like Pixar it felt like Disney - and not in the good way. The teaser felt pure Pixar.
...and I find her voice kinda hypnotic, it gives me goosebumps sometimes. That lilting yet strong female Scottish brogue, gah, kills me.
Kelly MacDonald has the best voice ever, it's true.

Though I feel the need to point out that the Dreamworks movie this most resembles, How to Train Your Dragon, was great and pretty much Pixar-worthy in ad of itself, so there's that. I really think Dreamworks has earned the right not to be used as a pejorative at this point.
I'm completely confident in Pixar, but it's a bit of a muddled trailer is all. I'm pretty much convinced it's the marketing people trying to make it look like Shrek or a Disney Princess film, when there's more to it. But who knows. The first bit is actually excellent.
Pixar HAS produced some weakish trailers in the past. The Finding Nemo teaser was incredibly lame. Monsters Inc. I remember being a bit blah. I can't remember if Ratatouille's second trailer was particularly good, at that point it was more of the usual Pixar momentum (and Ratatouille is arguably my favourite Pixar movie).
I will say this, there is a bit of a danger here that Disney buying Pixar might have a negative effect. Back in the day, when Disney was knocking hit after animated hit out of the park, they suffered from a dogpile of producers, all trying to "make their mark" on these sure-fire winners, and that's what slowly turned them into chaotic, formulaic jumbles. Animated movies tend to be decentralized productions, without a single strong viewpoint they can be subject to meddling from the suits, even when they have a proven track record. I'm hoping we're not about to see the same kind of "death by a thousand cuts" that chipped away at the classic animated Disney films.

Some of my initial feelings expressed above, but I'll remain cautiously optimistic. It still feels unconventional for a theatrical animated release, despite comparisons.
Accidentally spoiled myself on, of all things, a Disney World forum [a pretty major spoiler follows]:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
So yeah, looks like everything we've seen so far was from the first act. That last comment makes me think it will be even more Shrek-like, tho.
