Great job Sean. I think the most important part about all of your designs is that you gave examples and really got some discussion going on some very basic ideas. Slide shows, different size thumbnails, positions, content... all of the information is here now for Nick and Co. to sort out and decide what is right for everyone.

Edit: This isn't as good, VERY different. I'm not sure even I like it, its not really 'Chud' but, eh - you can see anyway. Also I stole the news feed from bleeding cool because its the only site I could think of that had the news displayed similar to how Joshua had done it, but with a white background and the logo wouldn't have stood out so much if I had a transparent png

I don't see how changing from a black background to a white background will help the site.  There are tons of great looking sites with black backgrounds out there, and it's one of the things I liked about CHUD back in the early days.  Take a look around and get inspired!  In my humble little opinion the white makes it look like every other movie blog out there.  If you're going that route you might as well just find a decent blog template and use that instead of building something from scratch.

Same here. I'm all for keeping the black.

I wish more sites would use it actually, it would reduce power costs like crazy. Seriously!

I know, I don't like the white either, but I was just putting it out there for people. I wish I could afford proper time on this, as it is, I'm knocking these things out in 15 minutes, if the site ever gets a full redesign, I'd love to take a crack at it. But for now, my hasty muddles will have to do. Its all about trying things out and seeing what people like.

Over the years I've been a really strong advocate for this site amongst people I know IRL.  With the very rare exception the response has been along the lines of "The colour scheme hurts my eyes"  which kills me because I know most would love it if they'd give it the chance.  Personally, it's never bothered me but I do think a new colour scheme could only help... although as good as Sean's work is that white mockup isn't the way to go.

The trouble is, this is only a tweak, a full redesign would afford more flexibility, but as it is, there's a slow back end, laggy loading time and because of wordpress I'm designing things that work in a very old fashioned HTML kind of way. So yeah, it could be a whole lot better, but with so many limitations, its a bit difficult. 

What do you mean "because of Wordpress"?  I'd assume this site has it's own content management system.  I'll admit that load times here are painful, but I forgive them because they're usually worth the wait!

As far as I'm aware, Chud still uses Wordpress, I may be wrong though. But there are reasons, as pointed out earlier in this thread as to why the design can't stray too far from whats kicking around now.  

Great looking stuff. I know I'm in the minority but I really like the white background.

Why not just have a simple design like the SuperHeroHype boards. They're simple, yes, but that's all you need.

The white background is definitely easier on the eyes, but it does feel like the site loses a bit of personality. Maybe that's just because I'm used to CHUD having a black background. I bet after a week or two, it would feel just as much like CHUD as the current design does...

This must be some biological thing to do with the eye because for a lot of people the black background is easier on the eyes. As if when there's less light there flooding out of the screen there's less work for the eye to do, but for other people they need more light coming out of the screen. I have no idea what the ratio is but I prefer the mellower vibe of white text on dark backgrounds myself.

I agree completely. For me the bright glare of some white backgrounds is overwhelming, like I'm staring at the sky.

But as the other Josh M said earlier in this thread, there really isn't much reason for people to debate it here. They're just doing a tweak of the main page, not the entire site.

Keep it black, some of us with LED monitors will have the eyes blown out the back of their heads if you want with a white background.

So, when are we gonna do this then?

Is this dead?  I was so excited.

I'd rather it wasn't. I'm still happy to do any work for free as long as it's enacted.

You know where I find the latest articles..  Lastest Post in the Forum sidebar.  Just now ....  THOR 2 SETTLES ON A DIRECTOR AND DATE, RDJ TALKS UP IRON MAN 3 that looks interesting I thought as I scanned the page looking for the direct link.  Eventually, I realized it was in the film strip.  I mean for FFS I'm not going to see the story if I have to hover over that thing.  This is why I've probably gone from consuming everything on the old site to reading only one or two items a week now, nothing stands out.  If it weren't for the discussions in the forum I'd have given up at this stage.

Anyway, I've done this, taking a leaf from the previous designs. See what you think, I imagine the chewers will like it, but I don't think casuals will, I still think the best way to go is the slideshow. I'd be wary of new people thinking it looks 'old'. Graphically, I don't like this, just because it ruins the shape of the green lines, breaking them up by with the ad. Oh and from a graphic design position, new youtube is horrific.

Seconded.  As a newer chewer (July 2011) I can honestly admit that even though I had visited the site prior to settling on it, I was normally turned off by the setup.  I would read a few articles and the I was off not really checking to find items that weren't listed in the film strip or the recent news.  I gave it much more thought after going to the Don't be Afraid of the Dark screening, meeting both Renn and Nick there, liking their attitudes and started getting my movie news and gossip from the local community.
