NEW HOMEPAGE DESIGN DISCUSSION - Page 9

The grid system is 100% my creation at this point in time, so creating templates to accommodate larger screen sizes (and mobile sizes) will be happening very soon.  But I am a busy student, so that won't be happening until AFTER Finals.

I still think you should take the background colour down for absolute black to something between #131313 and #171717. Also, I really don't think the tiled background on the header works, when minimized on an iPhone it kind of looks like tartan. I do think the logo at the top of the forum works fine, but any of the older ones do too.

Responsive mobile stylesheets coming soon.

On Nick's Piracy article, the quoted material is so dark gray that I am having a difficult time reading it. Tried it multiple computers, both running Firefox 20.0.1.

Brad could you try this? I'm certainly no longer married to black.

Not that I have anything against interracial relationships.

Yes!  I think the new site layout is great and certainly makes things a lot clearer, nice work guys. I think I'm now more exposed to some CHUD stuff that just passed me by before.

My only criticism would be on the appearance now - it feels a lot like a basic 'out of the box' CMS template, mostly because of the gradient backgrounds and simple text links.  I assume you're probably waiting until the layout is finalised before adding shiny new graphics?  I kinda miss the old tentacles logo as well, but I agree a smaller one is far neater.

I don't understand the need for the tending keywords myself, it feels a little tacked on at the top there but that may just be because I don't really have any use for them myself.

Good stuff anyway, I look forward to seeing it evolve further!

Edit:  The new design is also much more phone-friendly too :)

Yeah, I'll add some contrast to that situation.

Honestly I don't see what's wrong with the smaller logo at the top of the forums, it's pretty cool and tasteful. The main problem with the old front page logo was that it was so absurdly huge.

I think having the two headers be "the very latest" and "news" feels a bit, err, shall we say tautological? Wouldn't something along the lines of "Movie news" and "Features" make more sense? The blocky white font isn't the most aesthetically appealing choice either.

In general though it's a significant step back towards the world of coherency after that long front page dark age.

I just want everyone to know that we are aware of hyper-inflated reaction counts, and we're not sure what's causing this.  DISQUS has been notified, and a resolution should be occuring soon.

Let's not jump to conclusions; I'm pretty sure that at least 11 million people were fascinated by me slagging off The Following at length.

MY SIDES!

When someone quotes and responds to something I say in the forums I should be notified immediately. It would foster much more real time back and forth and increase visits.

The subscriptions are good for keeping updated but when things get active you may not notice someone replied or the conversation has moved on by the time you see it.

Just a thought

I get instant notifications about the threads I choose.  You can activate that in your forum settings and after every post.

I agree. They're too close for casual distinction.

Yeah, but I don't want instant notifications on all threads. I can wait to check them out but if someone engages me I would like to know instantly so I can respond.

I'm just saying if you add code to the quote button that notifies people when someone responds to one of their posts you will definitely increase traffic and activity.

I can live without it but for site visits and forum activity it is a really smart move.

I wish I could help out with that.  This side of the operation is all Huddler.

I like how this went from a discussion to a demands list.

Actually can CHUD help me cleaning my own ass?

Actually if there was a print option for CHUD toilet paper...just get Nick Offerman to do the instructional video of how to print your own CHUD toilet paper.

Now I'm picturing Nick Offermann materializing in my bathroom to wipe my ass everytime I take a shit.  The thought of this doesn't disturb me as much as the fact that I'm seemingly not bothered by such an idea.  I need to lay down.

If you're referring to me, I would like to point out that I have been making SUGGESTIONS in this forum for the past 2 years. I've never been a dick about it and I have always made them with "help Chud get more visits" in mind regardless of what I do or don't want.

In 15 years of trafficking the site, this is by far my least favorite layout yet.

It looks jumbled and unfinished.

Love the page, just throwing my personal take out there.

Sorry.

Some comments here are perfectly valid, yet there are posts here not in topic.

Yeah welcome to the Internet.

Looks great, well done!

I want to be able to post comments to articles using my CHUD login, not google or facebook or any of that crap.

Absolutely..

Facebook and Google.. the ultimate in stupid mediocrity

The problem here is that when they went back to that, the amount of comments below articles dropped drastically.  Things have picked up again with DisQus.  The decision to switch to it was a good one.

We can use CHUD's login system with Disqus, but the cost of integrating Disqus' SSO platform is prohibitive at the moment.

You guys should consider 2 things - dark text on a light background and the blog-type format.  Both would make reading the site more pleasing to the eye.  Something like Badass Digest or The Chive.

I miss having the main stories across the top of the main page. When they where just pics to hover over and see what they were. It made it much more intriguing and I'd take my time checking each one out. Now I visit this site half as much because of the "new" format and read about a quarter of the stories.

And as a side note I miss having the dripping sewer at the bottom with the floating links. That added a little atmosphere that I enjoyed. Hell I would add that back and a echoing dripping sound effect. But that'd get on most peeps nerves.

 Still a fan!
