I just read a post about the new Shakespeare movie, "Anonymous."  I am a Shakespeare movie fan and have wanted to see this movie. The post that I just read made my eyes roll in my head and reminded me of how LDS church members are often asked the same questions that have been dealt with over a hundred years ago (vis a viz polygamy, Negroes and the Priesthood, etc). The same with the premise of this movie that maybe Willian Shakespeare was not (or could not have been) the playwright for his plays. This too I though had been dealt with some time ago. It is what most high school English students and college English majors have learned about. To the best of my recollections, there are documents attesting to his birth, who his parents were, his marriage to Anne Hathaway, the baptisms of their children, his association with such people of the time as: Alexander Hoghton, Sir Thomas Hesketh, Robert Greene, Christopher Marlowe, George Peele, Thomas Nashe, Henrye Chettle, Philip Henslowe, Henry Wriothesley (3rd Earl of Southampton), Henry Carey, Will Kemp, Richard Burbage, Ben Jonson, John and Jeanette Davenant and their son William ; as well as records from the Globe theatre, and various property records.   There are various deductions and speculations that because there are minimal records of his schooling at the local grammar school, and subsequently not having attended Oxford or Cambridge universitiies, that he was considered incapable of being the prolific writer  he was. It is unfortunate that there are scant records today of William Shakespeare, and of other notables from the world's history. Similarly, many speculations have been made about Jesus of Nazareth, and others, their birth, and what sort of people he (or they) were, or seemed to be. Nevertheless, for those of us who have studied his plays, Shakespeare, beyond doubt, was very quick witted, well read, and extremely articulate. I am sure he would have been a member of MENSA if he was alive today, and like many of its members, despite their raw intelligence and preference for self education, do not find the need to attend institutions of higher education and be required to regurgitate the ideas of others. My wife and I will still go today and watch the movie, "Anonymous" and hopefully will enjoy it. (Paul M. Anderson)
