Is 120gps fast enough for you?

I'm still on 8mbs. Grrr.
http://www.techwatch.co.uk/2011/11/24/swedes-switch-on-120gbps-connection/

And while British companies are trialling pretty nippy 1Gbps connections, the Swedes have blown this – and even the South Koreans – out of the water with what’s claimed to be the fastest net connection in the world.

The 120Gbps pipe is going live at DreamHack over in Sweden around about now, and quite frankly, that sort of speed is, well, almost ridiculous.
DreamHack is a large scale digital festival with around 20,000 people expected to attend, all of whom will be able to get on this pipe, with the aim being to “beat the world record in capacity utilization in the network”. And to get some pretty tasty frags with an extremely low ping.
50 Cisco and Telia staff put together this monster 120Gbps affair which has been under development for a year or so.

The connection runs from Stockholm to Jonkoping (the festival site), around 300km in length, and will allow the entire population of Stockholm to stream music simultaneously with no sweat.
Alternatively, it can download a full movie in 47 thousandths of a second, the blink of an eye.
Cisco provided the hardware, including two CRS-3 routers, Telia the fibre network, and the gamers will doubtless provide the drool when they get playing on this connection.

Not too shabby.

I wish the US were experimenting way more with this kind of thing. We're still practically third world as far as internet.

This just makes me embarrassed to be an American. Ugh. The telecoms have such a stranglehold over the government they have no reasons to improve anything, as they can make more money gouging people with high prices for shitty connections

Anyway.. Is this fast enough? I don't know. I don't yet know what I'd use such a speed for. I am sure there will be wondrous applications down the line, but by then even 120 GB per second might not be a wide enough pipe for streaming neural VR from Mars (or whatever). So I will say its an improvement, but there is clearly more work to be done. Ultimately, information should be able to travel instantly and all at once in giant chunks at the speed of light. Anything less is a failure of imagination

My hard drive doesn't even go anywhere near speeds of that magnitude!!!

The speed of light, Kate? Umm, that might be asking too much.

Isn't that what quantum computing is about, to some degree?

Meh the United States is so behind in innovation when you have a Congress that is out of touch as is a paraplegic, and as corrupt as umm well actually I use Congress as my ultimate example, so I'm really at a loss.

Sadly a lot of political candidates are only about fixing America, and not having a vision of what to take it to. With a clear goal in mind, then the nations infrastructure can be tailored to it.

Since no one has been here since September and I am a techie I have to bring it back up on the scale.

All I have to say is Verizon better kick into gear, I thought my 135mb FiOS line was fast...

And about the porn thing... You could host your own network on this kind of line, make others pay for your habits... just saying... hahaha
