What's better?

Spoon's Underdog

Or Sly and the Family Stone's Underdog?

Spoon Van Morrison meets Thin Lizzy is neat but Sly blasts it out of the water with their energy & melodic dynamicism.

Result: Sly > Spoon

What Thin Lizzy song sounds like THAT?

I think this is the one that I'm hearing in my head.

I don't know. I kind of see the resemblance, but the feel of the two songs is completely different.

Personally, I like Sly and the Family Stone. I think it has more energy, the chorus adds that extra punch. Could be my love of 70s Soul and R&B.

No contest.  70s funk beats 90s acoustic whining any day.

I definitely don't feel right placing Spoon above the Family in any way, shape, or form, but I'm pretty sure even Sly himself would acknowledge that their "Underdog" is a goddamn incredible pop single.  I keep listening to their other stuff hoping that another song will grab me the way that one does, but it just won't happen (not that they don't have other good stuff, just nothing that great).

I always thought the original's accordions made it sound like a Jewish folk song.
