MANY IMAGES FROM JOHN CARTER WITH STUFF IN THEM! [UPDATED WITH POSTER] - Page 2

He can fucking act.  You know?

As for the high percentage of leading men from Australia - probably chalk that up to the White Australia policy.

You know who likes Taylor Kitsch? Bijork. And Kate Bush.

But seriously, stop being such an unbelievable snob.

Ooooh, relevant - rocking me with a historical reference from the fifties! Hell, why don't I chuck a few slavery barbs your way while we're at it and we can really get with the historical putdowns.

I'm not talking about whether he can act Subotai - I'm talking about him as a leading man in the movies - different beast all together.

Hell Toby Jones is a fantastic actor - does that mean I want to see him play John Carter? What do you think?

Even if the guy can act, does anyone think he'll be given a script that makes out he's anything other than the broadest of character sketches anyway? People keep throwing Pixar and Stantons name around like its a guarantee of quality - this is a big budget Disney blockbuster first and foremost kids, none of that is assured in the slightest.

I'm sorry I'm coming off as so negative here, but come on guys, we've been here before, we've seen this path taken by big blockbusters that shat the bed at the other end, how long does hope have to spring eternal exactly?

For every Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, we get half a dozen Cowboys & Aliens and  Green Lanterns. How long do we have to keep ignoring our instincts when they usually turn out to be correct?

The second season of Friday Night Lights in particular shows that he's absolutely a leading man. If not this project, some other one.

Who remembers watching Clooney break out on ER? That's Kitsch on Friday Night Lights, albiet on a show nobody watched. But there are moments -- more than a couple, enough to matter -- where he stops being a good "tv actor" and becomes a big fat honking movie star. My hope is that between John Carter, Savages, and Battleship, he gets a chance to show everyone else what he can do. Oddly, I have the most faith in Battleship.

[groan...]

You win an A for effort, though.

I'm hoping that he knocks it out of the park with SAVAGES.  It's a great fucking book, and I think that he's perfectly cast as Chon in it.

Give FNL a chance, RD!  Not for Kitsch.  But for Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton!

I have many problems with that adaptation (starting with Oliver and ending with Stone), but his casting isn't one of them.

Alright fellas, I'll be fair here and hold off on any particular view on Kitsch as a leading man until I've given this film a try. I've been wrong on seeming pretty boys before. I'll be happy to be wrong again.

I don't think you're wrong to be skeptical of Kitsch: MOVIE STAR.

The guy had the time and room to really grow into the Tim Riggins character.  Who knows if that same charisma will show up within the productions of 2 separate movies?

If I hadn't seen FNL, I'd feel the same way as you, because nothing I've seen in the marketing for John Carter or Battleship has me seeing much of anything in anyone yet.  That and it's not as if he stole the show in Wolverine (because after all... it was Wolverine).

Having seen FNL, I know that the potential is definitely there at least.

Thing is, will Tim Riggens be the making of him or his downfall? The girls may love him, but I've not heard one person outside of this forum refer to Kitsch by his actual name, anyone who's a fan of his I know, isn't really - they're a fan of Tim Riggens. In other words sure, he could be the next Harrison Ford - but he may be the next Tom Selleck.

We'll see I guess, lads got a big year next year and we'll know within twelve months if he's a going concern or another failed attempt at crossing over from one screen to another. Vince has his James Camerons Aquaman - now lets see what he does with it.

Wayward_Woman, I would definitely get Paul Verhoven to direct, as he seemingly  loves films with plenty of...GOR!  I would see it in theaters as well.  I used to read the GOR books in high school.

Only if Jon Heder plays Tarl Cabot.

"So, Cabot, then."

It's not like I think this is a guaranteed home run, but yes, I think Pixar and Stanton are a pretty good indicator of quality. Stanton knows how to construct a solid, engaging narrative, something that a lot of blockbuster directors have no idea how to do, and you know they're not going to cheap out on the effects.

Ugh, I hate this practice of sneak peeks of trailers being used to promote the debut of a trailer.  But I'm liking the footage I'm seeing as a balance to the more modest stuff we've seen in the teaser.  Looks like marketing is going to try to pump up the action and the speechifying.  And now I see that this could basically be TIM RIGGINS of MARS.  The moment Kitsch says "Ma,am?"  Swoooooon.  Hahahaha

(I'm not going to link the footage yet out of respect to the site.  I'm sure we'll be seeing a story about it on CHUD soon)

mcnooj82, Dejah saying you're...John Carter Of Earth! Priceless!  Finally some cool footage!  I cannot wait to see John Carter.  Also, I...Loved reading the...Marvel John Carter TPB that Dark horse

released. Really?  Tim Riggens?  Before Taylor Kitsch was John Carter, he was...Remy Lebeau aka Gambit, in the...Awesome...X-Men Origins Wolverine!

He was Tim Riggins first, duke!

mcnooj82, Sure.  But Kitsch's first...good role, was as...Gambit, in X-Men Origins Wolverine!  Now with...John Carter and Battleship, 2012 could be...Taylor made, for Mr.Kitsch, to shine!

I really dug that trailer.  Hopefully we'll get the actual piece itself uploaded soon, as opposed to having to tolerate interview silliness and that ridiculous camera zoom up to the trailer on the videotron.

Was the sky on Mars "blue" in the books? That distinctly un-alien look of the planet is really dowsing the fire of my interest in this thing.

it's been years (many, many years...) since I read the books and I can't remember the specifics....but I do know from what is shown in the trailer; it doesn't match what I remember in my mind...but such is the case with books > movies, so no big deal. Lucas isn't involved so.....I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

something recent I do remember...the verbal hate being thrown at 'Avatar' prior to it being released....and it turned out to be a fun movie.

Here is the thing though: prior to AVATAR's release, I was literally the only person on CHUD to declare it would be the new highest grossing movie of all time. I look at JOHN CARTER though, with those same eyes, and I see what could be a misfire

yeah....hollywood's record with "pulp" material isn't the best....  "The Shadow" and "The Phantom" are 2 that jump to mind.

That trailer is an improvement. This has been bumped up from "probably won't see in theaters" to "will definitely see in theaters if reviews are decent".

Based on the new trailer, Taylor Kitsch is no Sam Jones, and Lynn Collins is certainly no Ornella Muti.

Thus, I am disappointed.

It's going to be as big as a misfile as Cowboys and Aliens. Cool concept, just failed execution. I was bored just watching the trailer.

MoonBaseNick, I...Loved the new John Carter trailer.  "You're...John Carter...From Earth?" Dejah Thoris!  Also, Cowboys vs Aliens is at least to me...Less Interesting, than say an...Alien with incredible leaping powers.  Also...Lynn Collins as Dejah Thoris, a...Martian Princess in Breast Plates and other...Space Clothes!  Space Ships, 4 armed aliens, giant beasts etc.

I am perfectly fine with it being TIM RIGGINS OF MARS.

I don't think the movie itself will be a failure creatively.  I have no problem believing that a good film is one the way.  I just think they need to up their game if they don't want it to bomb as badly as Green Lantern and Cowboys & Aliens.

To be fair, I think it looks better than Cowboys & Aliens and what Green Lantern ended up as.

I have no doubt it will be, but I'm not the one that needs convincing.  I like what I've seen,  I like the talent involved, and I love the source material.  If they want to avoid a huge box office embarrassment (given the MASSIVE budget), they need to bring their A-game from here on out and start wowing the hell out of the general public.

Yeah, that was a pretty sweet-ass trailer. I actually rather liked the Kashmir remix myself, the scale looks great now, and Kitsch looks like he might be a good leading man and not just a Garrett Hedlund-esque blank slate. The epic tone is pretty cool too; I have no problem with pulp taking itself seriously if it turns out well.

Also, check out Willem Dafoe and Thomas Haden Church voicing some aliens!

Man, those Tharks look very Pixar. Well-animated, but cartoony as hell.

I don't get the hate, looks like a fun little flick to me.

They kind of remind me of Geonosians.

Ken Savage, The...Tharks are...Awesome!  I am grateful to Pixar, that there is some color, by way of the...Colorful Willem Dafoe as Jeddak Tars Tarkas.  I have been a fan of Pulp Science Fiction, since Glen A. Larson's...Other Classic Sci Fi series...Buck Rogers In The 25th Century...Blasted onto tv screens in...1979!  Buck Rogers, and Flash Gordon (the classic film as well as...Filmation's Animated series.)  Now if someone can produce a...New Buck Rogers, and a New Flash Gordon, the Silver Screen would be served a healthy portion of...Pulp, to go with it's Superhero Smackdowns!

Trailer makes it look like not a disaster. Maybe it won't be completely humiliating.

What a minute, you wouldn't love to see that? Shirtless, aged, and doughy, Jones leaps through the air chained to a thark, landing his Mars spear right in the white ape's blue-blooded chest. It may win over the glass skiff pilots, but what of the beautiful human/martian princess? Toby Jones would rip that shit up.

What's the music in that trailer? I know it's showed up in a lot of previews, but I can't remember what it's from.

Also I didn't realize Dominic West was in this movie. This pleases me.

Sounded like KASHMIR to me.

It's Led Zepplin's Kashmir.

edit: YOU BACKSTABBING JUDAS!!!!

Love you too, nooooooooooj. smile.gif

whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV.

I'll see it after this newest trailer, I still think it looks dumb, but dumb fun.  Disney got away with dumb fun with the first pirates, so here's hoping this is in the same vein.

I think Kitsch is a fantastic actor, Tim Riggins to me was the reason I kept watching Friday Night Lights.   Duke, Wolverine was a shit film, and even though Ktisch did all he could with the character of Gambit, the writting and directing made it so that even Daneil Day Lewis would have looked like shit if he played Gambit.

I was encouraged by the more enthused responses, but very little of this still looks good to me.  I can't help but feel like this seems to be the Prequels mixed with elements of Prince of Persia in terms of its presentation (the hero fighting a boring-looking creature in the arena, the weird choreography, the costuming, etc).  Design-wise, everything is just a little too dull, with the armored humans near the end reminding me of something out of SyFy in particular.  And while I do not confess myself an expert of the source material, meaning that I've no idea what powers the main character is in possession of, but the wonky leaps Kitsch was doing throughout the trailer look like cliche choreography from a purely visual standpoint.

I'm actually pretty tolerant of Kitsch too, but nothing from his performance seemed a standout here.  Grumbly, loud line readings and some inspirational shouting at the end?  Yawn.

NickP, We will have to agree to...Disagree about...X-Men Origins Wolverine.  I think it is...X-Cellent, and there is no one that could change my mind about it.  I am not a fan of Friday Night Lights, so I will always think of Kitsch as...Gambit, and wish he was in a spinoff film about the Rajun Cajun.  Hopefully there will be another incarnation of Rogue as well.  I would prefer the comics version.  John Carter should be an...Awesome Film!

1st - the QT version of the trailer is up over at Apple.com

2nd- I saw this over on iO9....I know it's a fantasy film and it isn't quite the the Barsoom I envisioned when reading the books, but this might add a little 'reality' to how Mars looks in the movie.

After seeing that video, I'll have to change my opinion on the film's redness.

IT'S TOO RED NOW!!!!!  GAH!

how much of FNL the series, have you seen?

I like how, from what little I saw, Kitsch's Carter is both a traditional Modern Movie Hero Cipher Guy, but he's also added a bit of swagger. I have no problem if the movie doesn't spend a whole lot of time exploring his character, his identity, all that stuff, in favor of him being a heroic, suave, badass ladykiller. Contrast that with Jake Sully, who starts to get an attitude as he learns about the Na'vi, but still has shades of that Gary Sinese "It Hurts To Breathe!" heroic grimace.
