Justified Season 3 - Page 3

"...Well, I think I might need a spot."

Also:

"The fact that you're not dancin' around the parking lot makes me think there's a 'but' comin'..."

Just the way Boyd said "I'm done" after his conversation with Raylan at the beginning. But really, as always, there was a wealth of great lines and exchanges. Winona gets flack from a lot of fans but I love her banter with Raylan.

And Art using the "old book" to deal with that guy. Holy shit. Great thing about this show is a scene like that is badass but also troubling and they won't just let that go.

I thought it was a slightly uneven episode and somewhat strangely paced, but I still loved it all anyway. Just because it wasn't as flawless as last week doesn't mean it still wasn't great.

The episode wasn't great, but we got:

-A fine introduction to Limehouse.

-Boyd vs. Dickie

-CARLA GUGINO

So I really can't complain.

Art's actions were the big thing for me tonight.

Pruitt Taylor Vince next week.

And goddammit, how many people is that now from Band of Brothers? McDonough, Speight Jr., Gomez, and Frank John Hughes tonight?

We seriously need some Ronald Speirs up in this bitch.

we'll need a time machine in order for it to occur but how about a "battle of the butchers"

"in this corner, from Justified...Ellstin Limehouse....and in the other corner, straight from Boardwalk Empire.... Manny Horvitz"

:)

You could make it a three way and throw in Tywin Lannister from GAME OF THRONES.

Also nice to see Raylan getting back on his game by figuring out Boyd's plan.  Loved Boyd realizing that Raylan had tried to hamstring him from getting to Dickie.

I do want to see where they take things with Art.

The stuff with Art was really interesting.

And I loved that they get around the Karen Sisco name problem by giving her a marriage and quickie divorce. Clever of them.

Interview: 'Justified' showrunner Graham Yost on villains, arcs and life without Mags

Quote:

Q: Goodall has a resemblance to a character Carla has played before that you don’t have the rights to. What can you say?

Graham Yost: Well, the whole rights issues was a confusion. We would have loved to call her Karen Sisco, but it was just going to be too hard to work out and the fact is that we just wanted her on the show playing a female Marshal. Also we liked the idea that she’s someone who Raylan knew when they were peers and now she’s in Washington. She’s a deputy director and that’s a fun thing to play with a little bit.

Where can I watch the first two seasons, or can I just jump in and start watching now?

I was going to check Netflix, but weirdly, since I cut my account  back to DVD's only, they no longer even try to get me to sign up for streaming, or show me what's available.

However, I'd say that while you wouldn't have much trouble with plotlines if you jump in now (most of this year's threats apear to be coming from newly-introduced characters) , it'd be a shame to miss the way the relationships among the cast members have grown over the course of the three seasons, and the development of Walt Goggins' Boyd Crowder in particular. If you reasonably can, watch the previous two seasons first.

Start at the beginning. Rent or buy the DVDs. You will have no regrets.

Don't be a cunt, start from the front.

Go Art! Some old school, illegal, police work right there. I wish there was an episode every day.

Did people really think Art was gonna kill that guy? I sure didn't.

Really liked Limehouse. Just the kind of character I want to see on this show.

Nah, I didn't think he'd kill him, but he sure was going to extreme measures to get him to talk. Understandable, but not something I would automatically think of when it comes to Art as a character.

The problem with Art's behavior is it is some of what he gets mad at Raylan for. I like that we see that side of Art, but I wonder if this is going to come back to haunt him later in the season.

I certainly hope so: it seems an obvious setup, but with only 13 episodes, who knows how much time they can afford to give it?

I think that is kind of the point wrt that scene.  Art is the boss, and that was some some sketchy stuff he did.  Traceable sketchy stuff, I might add.  I don't think they just did it to show that Art can be old school (it was a friend of his that was killed after being tortured), but rather to explore his character a bit and maybe give him more sympathy for Raylan's situation - he is surrounded by that personal policework in Kentucky.

Of course it's the point of the scene.  It's not like it's a coincidence they had Art musing that Raylan was his penance for some of his behavior in his field days at the top of the episode.

Yeah, I was a bit shocked by Art killing the guy as well. I kept waiting for the cliche of the panicked villain screaming "OKAY I'LL TALK!" But nope, he just shot him. I absolutely think this will come back to haunt Art.

What?  Art killed him?  Thought he just shot the wall, got the info.

Not only that, but Bill expressed that same love of the old-time cowboy lifestyle that is so much a part of Raylan's character; you could easily imagine Raylan giving the same speech about walking into the saloon.

And I'm slow on the uptake-- I had to be reminded that the telescoping baton was Karen Sisco's weapon of choice.

He didn't, you can clearly see him breathing when Raylan and Karen show up.

Just re-watched. I'm an idiot. My apologies.

Loved the Art scene as well, but I really liked the small exchange between Raylan and Boyd.  Those two have fantastic chemistry and my grin just grew bigger with each new line or expression.  This season hasn't quite hit the ground running as I expected.  There is a little more set-up than I anticipated - which is fine.  It's a good thing they have polished the dialogue even further and have such charismatic characters or it would be just a smidge tougher to get into.  Can't put my finger on it, but this season hasn't hooked me as much as last season.  Perhaps, it's the absence of a clear season-long villain.  Or, maybe Margo Martindale’s was just that stellar.  Don’t get me wrong.  I still adore the show.  It looks to be a great season.  It just hasn’t fully clicked, yet. I really can’t wait to see what’s in store for us.

I think it's definitely in the "laying groundwork" stage of the season, but there's an assurance to the whole production, from cast to direction to writing that leaps out. It's always exciting to see a show that's locked in, and even though I may not be able to tell if a character is alive or dead (jeez), the quality of the show is at least apparent.

It'll be nearly impossible to top Martindale's performance from last year, but the regular cast has never been stronger.

Was anybody else briefly distracted by Williamson doing Bubba Gump's voice again?

I think if you're expecting a single villain that lives up to Martindale you're setting yourself up for disappointment - not because they can't measure but because they're wisely taking a different approach. Otherwise though these episodes are very much following the formula established by the first two seasons, which is to spend the first few episodes laying groundwork while also delivering fun standalone stories.

I was distracted by his poor butchery skills more than the voice. What the hell was he supposed to be doing to that poor meat?

We have been introduced to the main villain in Neal McDonough's man from Detroit, and Limestone looks to be an ongoing presence as well.  Justified has always been shaggier and more procedural than its contemporaries like Breaking Bad or Sons of Anarchy when it comes to plot arcs.

Understood, and I almost muddied my post further by mentioning McDonough.  It's just that his presence wasn't as prominent or haunting.  I admit I had some expectations.  Now that I've set those aside, I should be able to enjoy what unfolds.  It really boils to the fact that by the second episode of last season I was riveted.  This time, I am not as much.

Really? The second episode of last season was the one with the pregnant escaped convict. It was kind of a low light of the season for me. Although it did have the grapefruit shot.

I guess I had a hard-on for the Bennett's from the moment I saw them.

I commented about my disappointment with Leonard's new novel Raylan upthread, and one of the oddest decisions he makes is to jettison not just Mags, but to swap out Coover and Dickie for a pair of Crowe brothers who turn out to be a pair of uninteresting fuckups. Both Coover and Dickie, for all that they were overshadowed by their mother, were pretty formidable opponents: they each basically had Raylan dead till Loretta, and later Boyd, saved him.

Bass Reeves should get movie.  The guy was great.  The stache alone would get an Oscar.

In O. Henry's darkly ironic original story, the Cisco Kid bears little resemblance to later adaptations. The character is a 25-year-old desperado in the Texas-Mexico border country. He kills for sport and is responsible for at least eighteen deaths. His real name is possibly Goodall.

Very sneaky, Justified

It's killing me that I haven't been able to see any of this season yet. Stupid being stationed in Germany. Oh well I'll continue to keep myself occupied with my season two DVD's.

HOLY shit.....why this hasn't been developed for film/tv is shocking...

There should be a Hollywood feeding frenzy for this story....I can only hope it would be produced/directed by competent film makers.

edit...

I see there has been something produced...but it looks like a slightly higher budgeted student film (and not a great one...)

After "Deadwood", I can't stand to see a western movie where everyone is always wearing spotless clothing, especially after riding a horse for days.

"Raylan" was written first, no?  On the Season 2 Blu-ray, there's a panel with Graham Yost, Elmore Leonard, and some producers, and Yost talks about taking Coover and Dickie from a Leonard story, while creating Doyle and changing Mags from male to female.

that is awful.

"Me and dead owls don't give a hoot."

Loved Raylan telling the story about the one rule he still obeys, followed shortly by whipping out LeGros' gun.

Neal McDonough is fantastic.  I loved his smile for the camera.

Another fantastic episode. And yeah, McDonough's smile was priceless. He's a formidable villain for sure. I really hope his "taxi-driver" gun isn't his undoing though (they kinda sorta maybe hinted at that tonight). McDonough is an actor I've seen in countless movies but I would have never really pegged him for a good villain until now.

Whoo!  Fun, menacing episode.

And LeGros, bringing the heat!  I love that guy.  So many great character actors in tonight's episode, shit, the whole show!

I wanna hear the rest of the story about how he got the track for his TAXI DRIVER gun setup. "I was out shopping for a Christmas tree, and..."

LeGros is hilariously sad/sadly hilarious as oxy-addicted Wade, especially "9... 1... 1....". So pathetic even Raylan can't stay mad at him.

Speaking of which, I guess being pulled away from his new domestic life made old Raylan even more ornery than usual. I love full on grumpy/irritated Raylan.

Justified next to Sons Of Anarchy and Hell On Wheels is one of the best dramas on TV and is a breath of fresh air from all the CSI, NCIS, and Law And order type shows that on every other channel.

Justified is light years ahead of those 2 shows.  Justified should only be compared to the greats now.

Can't wait till Boyd and Quarles start to have conflicting interests.  Raylan will be the least of his problems.

I love how they're slowly chipping away at just how menacing Quarles is. What the fuck was up with that guy tied to the bed?
