2011-2012 NBA Season - Page 3

I have a block. I just can't truly honor a shortened NBA campaign, and its eventual champion. Does anyone really put the Spurs' 50-game regular season championship up with the other, full-length campaigns?

The longer the road, the sweeter and more-earned the destination.

It feels like a lost season, no matter how it pans out.

Winning the title in this compressed 66 game schedule may actually be more difficult than a normal season. Teams are playing 5 times a week routinely and we are only missing 16 games.  The play is going to be ragedy this season because of no training camp and fatigue, but I hope the players are up to their usual level in the playoffs.

I loled when the Golden State crowd started chanting "Beat L.A.! Beat L.A.". The Clip ship has arrived.

Might catch a little of the Portland home opener tonite.

Celtics/Heat is the game of the night. The Heat were clicking on all cylinders in the opener against Dallas, so this'll be a real test for the C's. I'm hoping KG can take it up a notch.

This Norris Cole kid could turn out to be the steal of the '11 draft. He looked like the real deal tonite.

I was amazed that the Heat let him take that many shots in the 4th, the kid sure delivered. Looks like he is going Rondo on his own big 3.

Man, the Heat are looking really, really good this year.

Thank God all the Mavs pick-ups are signed to one-year contracts.

Clippers/Spurs should be the game of the night. Can't wait.

And they're young enough that all the back to backs shouldn't really bother them.  As a Suns fan...hell I don't even know what to say as a Suns fan any more.

Spurs are an outstanding test for the new look Clippers. I am still on the fence about how good this team can be.

The Clippers dont look long or deep enough to compete at a top level. They have 3 point guards, good offense from Butler and explosive play from Griffen. I am not yet sold on Jordan as a top level center and they have no front court depth.  Really looking forward to tonights game.

So the Lakers start the season playing 3 nights in a row including on Christmas day, then have 1 day off (today) and then host the Knicks tomorrow night. This, of course, is in addition to David Stern doing his best Mussolini impersonation and vetoes a trade  (agreed upon by all parties involved)  that would have sent Chris Paul to the Lakers. Of course Stern, being the dickhead he is, denies that  it had anything to do with the Lakers, but Paul ends up playing in LA anyway with the shitty Clippers instead.  Tell me again why people hate the Lakers so much?

I feel like this question has been put on the backburner, but as a sometimes-fan of the woeful Nets, I have to ask - is Deron Williams going to stick around? I sincerely doubt he's ever going to make it to Brooklyn, the Nets are just awful.

I seriously doubt he'll stick around. He's from Dallas and the rumor is he'd love to play in his hometown. And now with Lopez going going down, who they were planning on using as bait for Dwight Howard, you can probably forget he'll end up there. Howard would look great in Laker purple and gold!

It's been a hard start to the season for the Celtics fan. Three losses where they flirted with being blown out (the third one they were). I don't like their depth this year. I miss Nate robinson.

Geek Out Q of the Day: With the season now under way, how do you guys rate the point guards? For me:

1. Rose - the whole package on offense; pure clutch and youngest MVP ever

2. Paul - the new Isiah, unbelievable on both ends, best at running a team

3. D. Williams - a tad behind Paul, offensive machine

4. Rondo - a whiz at setting up teammates, clutch playoff performer

5. Westbrook - most athletic, only question is his decision making

6. Parker - most underrated, still has killer first step, and breaks down opponent like vintage Rod Strickland

7. Nash- still runs team second to none

Too early to say in this wacky season - some guys are going to rise, and some will drop trying to survive these 66 games.

I do like the Tony Parker/Rod Strickland comparison, though Parker can score.

OKC lookin' good. KD with the dagger.

0-3 champ Mavs are gonna need time for reshuffled pieces to gel.

Looks about right to me. And while he's obviously nowhere near elite status, color me surprised by how much potential Rubio has shown out of the gate. I'll confess to thinking he'd be a bust (and in fairness he still could be), but on the early evidence, we may be witnessing the early days of Nash's shaggy haired (and defensively piss-poor) successor.

You've just got to love KD. At the risk of tempting some terrible revelation about the lad, it's great that the NBA has a poster boy who's that dominant and that down-to-earth.

I think when all is said and done Durant is the true next superstar of the league. Looking at that OKC roster, I can see them going nose to nose with the Heat in the finals.

The only issue is that OKC is soooo young that I dont know if they can maintain composure, and I am not sure they will get calls.

If Lebron focuses on pure production and does not piss and moan when Wade closes the games, then the Heat look nearly unbeatable. But if Lebron continues to get butthurt about Wade being the closer on the team, get ready for more nonsense.

I know OKC has their own issues between Westbrook and Durant, but for some reason I am still expecting them to figure it out. Durant is just such an unguardable freak, he is averaging over 30 points and shooting over 50 percent since the start of the season, that is just ridiculous. When I look at Durant, I just see Kobe stretched 4 inches in height, and 8 inches in wingspan with a better attitude. This is the guy who may rewrite all the record books while King James will be relegated to being the most amazing athlete we have ever seen in the league, rather than one of the greatest players.

One of the NBA experts said that with the current Westbrook/Durant issues that the Suns have a shot to get Westbrook straight across for Nash to give OKC their best championship chance this year and the Suns have a building block.  As a Suns fan, even I can't believe OKC might go for that.  If they would then the Suns should do it immediately but I can't imagine a scenario where that works for OKC.

OKC is still young, but extremely talented and they got some playoff experience last year.  I think they'd have a much better shot if they had a full season to continue to gel.

My Bulls are in much the same boat.  Some young guys having gotten their first whiff of a championship, I thought they were poised to make a big leap forward in confidence and consistency this year.  But between the shortened season, the lack of a big pick up (I don't see Hamilton being the piece that puts them over the top), and Boozer remaining a big dead weight on one half of the floor, I have a hard time seeing them making it past a focused, hungrier Heat (who I kind of thought may implode after the 10-year storyline they were selling got derailed right out of the gate).

So while my heart will remain with Chicago, the head says Miami beats OKC in 6.  Unless Howard does end up in LA, which would shift things dramatically.

Kobe is Robocop, but Kevin Durant is the Terminator. LeBron is just Cain from Robocop 2.

A healthy Paul is number one with a bullet. Last year, he was just as good as Rose, but playing on a crappy team with a bad wheel. He's an offensive wizard, and a MUCH better defender than Rose (right now at least). We'll have to see if he ever fully recovers his health, because Paul at his peak was as good as any point guard ever.

Also, Westbrook is better than Rondo. He's on the wrong team (and actually, a Rondo/Westbrook swap would probably be good for both teams) and doesn't mesh well with KD, but he's a much better and more well-rounded offensive player.

The speed at which Rose has added a deadly 3 point shot is amazing. He was already the fastest, most athletic player the 1 position has ever seen. I have watched Rose twice this season and he definately is looking more to set up his teammates. I still cant say he is number one at the position (I have a 3 way tie at first) currently, he definately has the most talent and will be the best point guard of his generation unless he suffers a terrible injury.

Paul is the most asthetically pleasing point guard, he is a joy to watch and creates opportunities for his teammates better than anyone except Nash. But when you consider that Nash is not 1/10th the defender that Paul is and cannot get to the rim the way Paul does, Paul becomes the offensive fans first choice at point guard.

Personally I think Williams is right up there with Paul and Rose for that number one spot. He has amazing size, great passing, is an inside/outside threat and is a great defender at the 1. It's a shame he has never had other great players to play with, I think if he even had a decent team around him that he would compete for a title every year.

A credible argument can be made for any of these 3 as the number 1 PG in the lead. The other candidates all have significant flaws that remove them from contention. Here's the rest of my rankings.

4. Rondo-  If he had a jumpshot he would contend for number 1. He is the best defender at the 1, the best help defender, a good distributor and an amazing offensive rebounder. But having your 1 not be a threat to shoot from the outside is so damaging strategically to a team that until he becomes good at this, he will never be in the top group.

5. Parker- He is the poor man's Chris Paul, not as explosive, similar injury problems, but a wonderful offensive player and a great table setter.

6. Westbrook- He is as talented as Rose physically, the guy is lightning quick and strong as hell. But he has not yet learned to play the 1 as a 1. He is very reminiscent of Iverson in that he has amazing ability, but does not seem to understand the role. He may get his head straight and become an amazing player. Or he may continue down his path of contentiousness and poor decision making and become a coach killer. I think he may need to move to 2 guard if he cannot make being a distributor his priority.

7. Nash- he is an artist on the floor. At his height he made basketball a beautiful game. But his defensive limitations have denied his teams the chance to win championships. Always a great player to watch, but not one I would want on my team to compete for a championship.

PS, if OKC trades Westbrook for Nash they are insane.  They need someone who can penetrate and dish to Harden, Durant, Sefalosha and others. OKC is still hampered by not having a player that can post up. The are two ways to create inside out open shots, dribble penetration and dumping it down to a player that can score in the post 1v1.

If they really want to trade westbrook they would be much better off getting a solid pointguard and a post up player. Something along the lines of Randolph and Conley from Memphis for Westbrook and Collison or Ibaka, or maybe they move him for Gasol in a multi team deal that also brings them a credible point guard.

One last thing. I feel terrible for the Knicks losing that kid Shumbert in the first game. With him on the floor the Knicks looked amazing, with the collection of crap they have at point guard now they look like a 500 team.

This looks ridiculous even as I type it, but is there any chance the Mark Jackson-coached Warriors hit 'respectable' this year? They've got some nice pieces and the chemistry's looking pretty good thus far.

I am not sure about the warriors, having steph curry and Monte Ellis as your two best players seems a bit redundant. I only watched their game against the Clips but they seemed to fade pretty badly. Given their ability to score and the fact we are going to see some sloppy basketball this season means they maybe have a shot at .500, but I doubt it.

I like the Warriors backcourt. I hope they keep it together. And I'm rooting for Jackson.

The Celtics looked great tonite. The Pistons were just what they needed.

Looking forward to Clips/Bulls. Hopefully, my boys will bounce back after getting trounced by the Spurs.

Speaking of the Spurs, I think they're the sleeper contender this year. Their reputation is one of an old team with a closed window, but they have a nice mix of youth and vets. only thing that baffles me about them was the decision to move Hill. He worked great for them last year.

I feel like a lot of teams had unfinished-seeming offseason plans. Everything pointed to the Spurs amnesty-ing Richard Jefferson and finding a replacement for him, and possibly filling the Hill gap. Not that it will matter - the sturdier teams with systems already in place will benefit the most from this shortened season.

Rose outplayed Paul again.  Bulls still looking good.  The UC should be nuts tomorrow.

Lakers won an ugly one today. Was dissapointed to see Ebanks as a DNP, I think he brings athleticism and defense that does not always show up in the box score.

I also would of preferred to see McRoberts as the first big off the bench with Pau moving to the 5. I think McRoberts adds a lot more to the team than Murphy does.

On the plus side, Kapono is playing better basketball than I imagined he would and Barnes and MWP are also exceeding my expectations.

Bynum was just a beast, if he could stay healthy I think the Lakers are a better team this year than last.  I really think Odom is on the downside of his career and that the two headed monster of Murphy/McRoberts will be better in the long run.

Blake is getting better, but I still think the Lakers need a point guard if they are going to contend for a title.

I am just spitballing here...

but there aren't a lot of amazingly talented seven footers in the league. One of them is DeMarcus Cousins, who just demanded a trade from Sacramento, who responded by sending him home. Probably for good.

Another is Dwight Howard.

Cousins is a massively talented guy who needs a change of scenery. The Kings also have a huge glut of good wing players. And Sacramento has a lot of salary cap space under the cap.

Just sayin'.

Hopefully the Kings get something for that headcase.

The problem, as with most Dwight trade scenarios, is that nobody is going to trade for him unless he's going to stay there after this year, and I don't see that happening in Sacramento.

A team would have to be real stupid to want a cancer like Cousins on their roster. He'll probably get dealt to the Warriors.

Yeah, it's kind of amazing how accurately he lived up to his billing as a super-talented head case. He has absolutely been both of those things to the highest degree. If I was a veteran team starting to rebuild, I might consider trading for him if I had veterans to rein him in. Otherwise, I wouldn't want to touch him for at least 3-4 years.

Thread Starter

As for Cousins, he has DC talent, but unfortunately has the attitude too. An interesting fit for him might be the Lakers.

I actually wrote this as one of my predictions for the season:

"Ricky Rubio wins the Rookie of the Year award. I'm all-in on Rubio. His game has always been more suited for the NBA than Europe, and he's on a Minnesota team full of young guys who can run and shoot. He can defend, rebound, and will throw at least 2 Sportscenter-worthy passes a game. Jason Kidd won ROY while shooting 38% from the field, just sayin..."

I've loved Rubio ever since the hype started on him. His game is perfectly suited for the more wide-open NBA game. You can count the guys in the league with his kind of passing instinct on one hand. People keep forgetting that he held his own in the Olympics against some of the best point guards on the planet at 17.

I think its safe to say that the Knicks are a bad team until they find themselves a backcourt. Imam Shumpert may be the answer, shame he was hurt in the first game.

I watched Iman Shumpert for years in the ACC. Trust me, he's not the answer. Guy's an athlete, but his basketball IQ is painfully low.

I got him in the 5th round last year. Almost single-handedly won me my league. He's just ridiculous. I hope he gets the credit he deserves this season, even though the Wolves won't be above .500. I know it's blasphemous to say, but I might take him over Blake Griffin as the league's best young PF.

So, uh... stupid question, but, that Love trade isn't really worth it, is it?
