2011-2012 NBA Season - Page 2

My favorite coverage of the trade.

http://blogs.thescore.com/tbj/2011/12/09/great-moments-in-blocked-trade-history/

Also, another potential game-changer on the market: Rip Hamilton was bought out.

Obviously he's lost a step, but as a complimentary role player, he'd be a GREAT fit on a number of teams. Maybe some team gets crazy creative and reunites him with Chauncey Billups?

Grant Hill back with the capped-out, old Suns. Just what exactly is it that this team is doing? Why have I heard no Steve Nash trade talk? This is his free agent year, it makes sense the Suns would want to ship him out, right?

And finally, welcome back to the NBA, Eddy Curry! Be generous with the complimentary fries!

EDIT: Mavs go for Vince Carter. Sure, why not. Though I think they should have just went with Rudy Fernandez, I hope he's still the starter.

David West to the Celtics. Hornets gets Sasha Pavlovic and Jermaine O'Neal, and are apparently then going to flip O'Neal to another team. In other news, the Celtics have zero centers.

Also, the Paul trade is back on. Same pieces, but apparently the Lakers are going to give the Hornets something more. Probably cash.

Wow, I love the back and forth that's been going on. Paul ISN'T going to the Lakers, and that three team trade is dead. Lamar Odom is going to the Mavs for a trade exception, though. I have NO fucking clue why the Lakers' reaction to the trade falling apart is, "Hey, let's make the team that swept us last season WAY BETTER!"

Reports now say that  Magic are willing to trade Howard to either the Nets or Lakers. With the Chris Paul trade dead, its pretty clear Howard will end up a Laker. Though I don't see why the Lakers would need 3 seven footers. Maybe Bynum or Gasol will be traded next.

So, instead of a great package that would have been received from the Lakers and Rockets, the Hornets will get the spare parts deal of Kaman, Bledsoe, Aminu and the Clips number one pick.

So, good job Dan Gilbert and Mark Cuban!  Your bitching and moaning has prevented a struggling franchise from even approaching relevancy for the foreseeable future.

Call me crazy, but I like the Chris Paul trade for both sides. That draft pick could be a number 1 overall. And I'm geeking out picturing the Paul -Griffin combo - a Stockton-Malone/Paton-Kemp for the new millenium

Honestly, I don't think the Suns will trade Nash unless he specifically requests a trade.  People in this town will go watch a mediocre team with Nash at the point so Sarver has guaranteed tickets sold.  He also has to deal with the fact that he's a very unpopular owner and Nash is one of the most popular players here ever.  I think he's doing everything in his power to avoid being the guy that ran Nash out of town, he's trying to make Nash be the bad guy.

Unless the Clippers, with their ridiculous level of talent, actually perform well.*

Then the Hornets essentially junk the year, losing David West for nothing, forced to feed Chris Kaman twenty times a game in the pivot with no one of considerable talent surrounding him. Bledsoe becomes a manageable point man, maybe, but that's it. Terrible team, BANKING on the Clippers losing. Though given that Vinny Del Negro is the Clippers coach, entirely possible.

The Lakers trade would have gotten them Odom, Scola and Martin. Three great players? Not really, but a decent nucleus. More importantly, three DEFINITELY tradeable assets. Lots of people don't really want Kaman, and while he comes off the books this summer, giving the Hornets lots of cap space, the franchise has been tainted, and it will be hard to get free agents to come there. Not Charlotte Bobcats hard, but hard enough,

*It's hard to find out about these things, but is it possible the Clipps pick is already from another team like Minnesota or something? Then maybe it's worth something.

EDIT: It IS Minnesota's pick. NICE.

P.S. I LOVE this crazy offseason.

David Stern = John McLaughlin?

Sources are now saying the Clippers-Hornets deal is dead.  And that the league is doing all the negotiating on behalf of the Hornets, causing a lot of GMs to steer clear as they don't trust to be dealt with fairly.

That can't be true, can it? I kind of understand that the league would have a say in the deal but this just reeks of collusion. If I'm the Buss's, I'd be EXTREMELY concerned by how my team is viewed by Stern and his minions.  They already have a salary cap and yet a bunch of these assholes (Cuban, Gilbert, I'm sure some more who are unidentified) still hate on the Lakers, Heat and the Knicks for building or trying to build a winning team.

I hope the season begins with the Hornets having only five players under contract,

Doesn't Stern realize his shenanigans are driving the value of the franchise DOWN?

Chris Paul is a Clipper! How fun is that team gonna be to watch?!

Also, if the Blazers sign Jamal Crawford they could really be dangerous. Not sure what the Hawks are thinking letting him go.

I haven't been sure what the Hawks have been thinking since they traded 'Nique.

Poor Baron Davis.

Back to the Clippers: Magic Johnson tweeted they could come out of the West. Talk about instant high expectations. Good luck, Coach Vinny.

Magic Johnson is an idiot.

I am a die hard Laker fan, but I definately will be watching Clipper games. If you could pair one big man with one point guard for pure entertainment this would be the pairing I would choose.

Personally I think the Lakers were wise to deal Odom, better to trade him a year early than a year late. He has always been inconsistent and emotional. Now you can add aging and a year of Kardashian to that mix.  From what I read and hear, Lakers are still working on bringing in Milsap, and if that happens it means Pau will be moving on as well.

I can't believe that people are actually fooled into thinking the Clippers are a legit franchise that is championship caliber.

I recall reading an SI cover story several years back that named the Clippers as the worst pro. organization in American sports history. Indeed, they've made the playoffs 4 times in 33 years. Yet, somehow now they're in the same class as the Lakers and Celtics. Sorry......,not...gonnna...happen.

Well, I'm going to assume the Clip Ship finds a cheap two-guard, probably in a trade involving Mo Williams. Beyond that, given the influence Chris Paul has already thrown around, a weak start could put some Spoelstra-style pressure on Vinny Del Negro, the worst coach in basketball. I could see a Paul-led movement to get him ousted early. And if they get a real coach in there, and a competent two-guard, then yes, they could be better even than the Lakers.

Even though the season is fast approaching, I still feel there's a decent number of free agents and teams with tradeable assets. I think there's one more big shakeup coming.

Anybody watch that ESPN Season preview last night? Ughhh. Worst collection of talking heads ever. Really makes you appreciate the Turner group. Rick Bucher was trying  to say Westbrook was the best player on the Thunder. And Chris Broussard kept shrilly talking over people. It was awful, could only make it thru about 10 minutes.

On a positive note, i really recommend watching the "Open Court" show on NBATV. Just great players telling funny stories. I love it.

What are your sleeper teams? I think the Blazers might surprise and end up in the West top 5. The East is harder to predict, but I think the Sixers might take a step up.

Have a feeling Chis Paul will get hurt ala Danny manning.

Love the Rip Hamilton Pick up by the Bulls.  He'll be the scoring leader off the bench(I hope) and finish the 4th with Rose.

I think this year, teams are GENUINELY going to catch others sleeping, so I wouldn't be surprised if Denver and Atlanta rush out the gate. Even with all that talent missing Denver still goes about eight deep, and if Gallinari seizes control of that team, look out.

Nice call on Denver Gabe, they are deep, talented and young, precisely the type of team that can thrive in a compressed season....though I would expect them to go quietly in the playoffs.

I am most curious about Memphis, losing Battier certainly hurt them leadership wise, and the Mayo trade talk may of given them a locker room problem. But they were fearsome in the playoffs last year and if Rudy Gay returns they are loaded with talent.

I'll go ahead and call it: Memphis' frontcourt of Gay/Randolph/Gasol is the best in the league. They should be a team to watch this season.

The problem with Denver is that three of their top guys are stuck in China, and who knows when/if they'll get them back. Without Chandler, Smith and Martin, they'll have some serious issues.

The Knicks (Chandler/STAT/Melo) might have something to say about that.

As far as sleepers go, I think Indiana has a chance to surprise people. They don't have a star, but they've got talent and depth at every position. The David West signing could go down as one of the better moves of the summer if he's healthy.

agreed Clever, and Hibbert is quietly developing into a beast.

PG - Lawson, Andre Miller

SG - Afflalo (if he re-signs), Rudy Fernandez

SF - Gallinari, Al Harrington

PF - Nene, Kenneth Faried

C - Mozgov, BIRDMAN

They could use some more post-scoring, but I dunno, I think that's a decent nucleus, one with strong chemistry from the last few years. That last factor will matter in a compressed season.

Guys in China - Wilson Chandler (they'll miss him), JR Smith (fucking crazy) and Kenyon Martin (good riddance).

Memphis played out of their minds in the playoffs, they lack enough length on the perimeter to disrupt a competent offense. Ball movement isn't too great either.

And just FYI, I am going to base everything I say about the NBA from here forth on detailed, drunken NBA2k12 simulations. And according to my calculations (I'm like Hollinger, except my method is more legit), the Lakers are gonna be sub .500, Minnesota will be underrated and eventually feared, Lob City will be amazingly entertaining but not quite top-tier, the Knicks will be really good, and the Mavs will be unstoppable.

Three best squads in the League, according to this sophisticated methodology, will be Chicago, Dallas and ... Boston. Boston might get slept on, what with all the activities buzzing around at the moment. I think they'll be more focused without Shaq's corpse mouldering it up, KGs knees might be a bit livelier with the extended time off, but they have questions at center. I love their depth; I think the Brandon Bass acquisition is fantastic, and I am an original Marquis Daniels fan. I can see their veteran mentality and their bench leading the aging BoS squad out of a hotly contested East and into the Finals against the Mavs, where Dirk will put in work and the 'ship stays in the D.

Obviously, I am heavily biased here.

I am unbelievably hype to watch some real-life basketball.

Chandler played great last year (though better for NY than Denver), he'll be a significant loss. Smith, for all his craziness, is an extremely talented offensive player who is capable of huge scoring outbursts. Martin actually just posted his best numbers in years, and though he's never been a great player, he's a tremendous defender, and definitely worlds better than Mosgov (who was quite terrible last year).

They've got a decent nucleus, but they're lacking in players who can create their own shot, and I think they'll struggle to beat good teams.

Counter-intuitively, I think Nene may have a bazooka year, and finally play up to his potential. Maybe he has something to prove. I've always liked his game, but have wondered why he wasn't more dominant. If he can wreck up opponent's interior and stretch their wings with his (underrated) J, creating shots won't be such a problem. I've always liked the Nuggets, simply because I used to smoke weed, and we could talk about the Denver Nugg while smoking Denver nugg.

I put together my Finals prediction for my brother-in-law (who works on the Ben & Skin show on ESPN103.3 here in Dallas). I feel it should be heeded, as I called the Mavs over the Heat in 6 before the playoffs even began (and as a Dirk-era Mavs fan who watched every single damnable game in 2006, who truly believed it was the Mavs time, who planned on making an epic remix of the ABC Finals anthem that year, which might be the best sports anthem of all time, who wanted nothing more than to hang out with Stackhouse, Marquis Daniels and Devin Harris - who made up a baller trio that should have starred in their own TV show, but not a shitty reality TV show, more like a variety game show - and who watched in shellshock as Terry bricked up 7 for 25 in deciding game 6, nothing in the sporting realm could be more satisfying) ...

Uhh, yeah, I nailed that shit, and you can run tell your mother.

Anyway, 2012 NBA Finals: Mavs over the Celtics in 7 as Age and Wisdom unexpectedly triumph against the hungry up-and-comers yet again. I don't think the back-to-backs and back-to-back-to-backs will be a huge deal (at least for these two squads) because their coaches are savvy enough to lean on their deep benches, slash their starters minutes and bomb games if necessary in order to give their All-Stars some rest. I reckon these Olde and Ancient Regimes will finish up in the middle to end of the pack, seed-wise, because in this truncated season the seedings will mean nothing.

KG will scream epithets at David Stern in game 5 live on national TV and become a cultural folk hero. Dirk will average 32 PPG and 7 dimes a game in the series. Seriously, he has too much length on the perimeter. I think Marion will eventually get into the starting lineup. Marion, Odom and Kidd added up probably equals a fucking Quetzacoatls wingspan. If Cuban can land Pryzbilla (and I also predict Mavs fans complaining loudly about the move, only to be proven ignorant), the combo at the 5 spot is massive. Heads are worried about the loss of defensive intensity with Chandler's exit (and I don't blame him for the move, he's going to play in the Garden, he's gonna get paid, and Cuban isn't going to have to worry about his contract when he loses significant games in the following seasons).

The Mavs have two ethereal mentalities in Odom and Terry (Terry, the Hidden Agenda, Secret Weapon and the forgotten element in Dallas' victory over the Heat), and keeping them grounded in Carlisle's system will be crucial. And a competently coached squad should be able to solve the Ninja Dallas Zone this year. It's going to be effort, effort, effort, with a bit of balance provided by fantastic depth.

So as to the question of defensive intensity, I believe Chandler ultimately won't be missed, because Dirk is going to take on that role. He has the hardware now. Before, when he became enraged and his inner Wotan erupted, it disrupted the team's identity. Dirk yelling at Marquis Daniels was an ugly thing, because it was an impotent rage. Dirk was never calmer than he was last year (and his state of mind was incredibly blasted during the infamous Golden State series, as his father battled a deadly cancer while having to battle his nominal basketball father-figure in Nellie while sick as a dog with his recurrent sinus troubles, which is something I sympathize with. Not enough people know these things about what happened against Golden State).
His drive to the rim in Game 4 to decapitate the Heat is one of the most cold-blooded sporting feats ever to be seen.

In order for the Mavs to be as good as they can be in the coming season, they need Dirk to combine his leadership from the finals with the rage and intensity that used to mark his mental game. Remember when he blew up the Suns for, what, 55 points because Tim Thomas called him a pussy? Dirk was mad. It elevated his game.

His game doesn't need that anger to elevate the Nowitzness crush level anymore. But his team needs it. I hope Geschwinder is filling Dirk's off-season with nothing but chess-gambits and famous military speeches. Nowitizki led the Mavs to the title through pure skill against the Heat. He will need to lead them with heart and intensity in order to defend the Squarejaw City Championship in 2012.

The Knicks frontcourt is great on paper, but I'm still not sure Melo and Stoudemire mesh well. They need the ball in the same spots. I'll take Memphis'.

I'm a Celtics fan, but I'm nervous about this year. I like the Bass move, but I think they'll really miss Delonte West.

Shit, more bad news for the C's: Jeff Green out for the year with a serious heart ailment. Here's hoping he ends up okay.

Baron Davis to the Knicks. I'm rooting for B-Dizzle not ending up Stevie Franchise part 2.

Baron Davis to the Knicks is SUCH a Knicks move.

Speaking of which, I heard a rumor they might ALSO pursue Gilbert Arenas. Again, classic MacGruber.

Davis has a chance of working out, Davis and Arenas together sounds like Isiah Thomas is pulling the strings again.

Latest rumors suggest Knicks are looking into Kenyon Martin.

I love that it feels like they're filling their roster with former superstar malcontents.

Many people are picking them to win the Atlantic, but I don't think they're deep enough to withstand a major injury. Plus, the Celtics.

Also, I still think the Lakers will be a better team than the Clippers, at least in the regular season. Reason one is that the Clippers don't have enough time to build a solid Paul-centric offense. It will take awhile for those pieces to build chemistry. Reason two is Vinny Del Negro.

I was happy with my Lakers performance despite the collapse at the end. I think the Lakers have found a good new coach. From starting Ebanks, to McRoberts fine play to a few flashes from Gaudelac i think we will be just fine once Bynum returns.

I really love that Brown went with Blake to in the last part of the game. Missed freethrows and Kobe's turnover aside, the Lakers will again be a force this season, especially in the depleted West.

How about that Odom trade now?? McRoberts > Odom. Keep up the good work Mitch.   We still need a point guard and another 2 guard, but I would take this group over any other in the west except OKC.
