Gabe T's post really drives home the point that there really is something to be said about the mainstreaming of exploitation fodder like Maniac. This remake will not be a limited engagement or play for a year in shithouse theaters w/ cum-crusted seats in the middle of Buttfuck, Nowhere, instead, it's going to have relatively significant marketing muscle and aim. I think maybe that's part of what bothers me so much about this (I feel) boring new slate of absurdly violent, "ironically" misogynistic, and daringly unoriginal films. I guess I just have it in my head that this kind of material loses its grimy, idiosyncratic soul when pushed through the grossly nostalgic new school genre model.
