Atlanta, Raleigh, Charlotte... we've got you hooked up for some adventuring.

Saw this yesterday in Charlotte.  It's definitely my favorite Spielberg in a good while.  My comments echo a lot of the positive stuff seen here.  Knowing absolutely nothing about the TinTin universe before seeing the film, I was able to follow the story right from the beginning without much confusion.

A few specifics:

The motion capture is amazing, the best I've seen.  It is used to full effect and there were only a few minor spots where the limitations of the process showed through.  Zemeckis should be calling him and asking for tips.  Or, you know, just make regular movies again.  It even beats the pants off of Avatar, and that goes for the 3-D usage as well.  This is the first 3-D movie I've seen where it is essentially unobtrusive to the viewing experience.  There were exactly two points in the entire film where I noticed it to the point where it pulled me out of the film

those being when TinTin is wielding a flashlight and the dust in a room is 3-D (I hate that effect) and when the villain points his cane at someone and it juts out of the screen (the only real occurrence of something like that in the film).  And neither of those a so long as to be bothersome.

The action is everything that the action in Crystal Skull was not.  There are similar action breaks in both films, but the atmosphere and context of the situations in TinTin earns it.  My absolute favorite action scene in the film is

when Captain Haddock is hallucinating and relives the pirate siege of his ancestor Sir Francis Haddock's boat, the Unicorn.  For me, the pirate action in this film was much more entertaining than the 2 Pirates of the Caribbean films I saw.

All of the performances were very good, but Andy Serkis knocked it out of the park with this one as Captain Haddock.  Best performance from him since Gollum (or Caesar if you're so inclined).

So it's pretty obvious that I would highly recommend that you all go see this one.  The story is interesting and action-packed, the technical chops are outstanding, and it is just an all-out fun film to watch.
