Opinions, folks-How good are these?

I've been looking over a few titles, but not too sure if I wanna spend the cash for em so i come to you kids looking for some thoughts. And yeah, I know, i could do a search on em but dammit, i'm lazy today!
i do have Battle Royale and really dug it but did not realize there was a two disker out there (mumble grumble piss moan) how much better is the 2 disk? Worth getting or does the single give you a good enough job?
What about Audition? i've heard a couple of recomendations for it and the back cover certainly intrigues me. hollywood video has the R-rated version which i don't think I wanna go with since theres an unrated out. Thoughts?
And I know its not horror, but since I mentioned Audition, that director has two others that I have seen/heard about that sound funky; Fudoh (sp?) and Dead Or Alive?
God, this sucks! I wanna buy buy buy!!!! but i hate getting a stinker!

Fudoh is Takashi Miike's best film. Too entertaining for words. If you don't like Fudoh then there's clearly something wrong with you.

Dead or Alive is more of an acquired taste. Hyperkinetic beginning and ending, slows down quite a bit in the middle.

Neither film is anything like Audition.

Audition is a great film by any standard but to me it is the best Japanese horror film you can get. Definitely stay far away from any edited version. I'd recommend Evil Dead Trap as well for Japanese horror.

I've got Evil Dead Trap (picked it up from BestBuy on advice from folks here actually) and enjoyed that one, even through the multiple endings (grin)
I keep looking at Audition over at Suncoast but end up putting it down. looked trhough some reviews of both that and Fudoh on Amazon andthe general concensus is they are goodies. And gods no, i would never touch an r-rated versionwith the knowledge of an unrated.

Audition. Wow, what can one say.
This is a severely disturbed slice of cinema.
I also liked Nakata's "Dark Water".

Who has seen City of Lost Souls, and is it good? It's one of the few Miike films I can find locally (I already have Audition).

I also enjoyed Hideo Nakata's Ringu and Dark Water. I'm a little disappointed that he's coming to America though. This is one case where I wish a good director would not gain Hollywood exposure. How can he win?

City of Lost Souls isn't a horror movie, despite what the title may imply... it's a gangster movie. not bad, but certainly not Miike's best.

Audition is just brilliant, hands down.

Dead or Alive is complete and total ass, with a very good opening sequence so it's actually even worse than ass IMHO since it tricks you into thinking it's gonna be good.

I have City of Lost Souls but haven't watched it yet, I should get on that...and Fudoh, why do I keep forgetting to borrow that from Rogueboy?

Okay okay okay! I get the picture! i will pick up Audition. Seriously it seemslike that is a hands down winner as i have yet to hear a bad thing about it. I'm also looking really hard at Fudoh-it just ssounds really cool.
I still wanna know if there is a great difference between the single and double disk of battle Royale. I guess the two disk has eight extra minutes? and dubbed in english?
thanks for the words on dead or Alive too1 I was aboutthat one as well, but it now has huge pencil scratching throughit.
now does anyone know where one might sell organs for a quick buck or two? (damn bills....mumble grumble piss moan)

the Dead or Alive movies are yakuza movies, as is Fudoh. they are definitely not for everyone, but the same could be said of ANY of Miike's filmography.

I don't own it but I've seen it - I believe the SE is called the director's cut and in my opinion it is weaker than the theaterical cut. This is mainly because the majority of new scenes are, quite frankly, pretty boring. In the middle of such an excellently paced film they just s..l..o..w.. it all down.

The flip side of that coin is that you DO get additional character development in that you see more flashbacks involving more of the characters in their pre-BR reality.

As far as I can remember there are no new scenes involving violence or action. When showing the film for the first time to friends who I think need to see it, I would never choose the SE over the final cut.

I didn't see many of the special features, but the behind the scenes footage of the set was very cool in contrast to the intensity of the film and its subject matter. I'd love a package with the regular theatrical cut but including the extras on the special edition.

added: City Of Lost Souls is the weakest of the Miike films I've seen. You'd be better served hunting down a copy of Dead Or Alive instead; if you're especially resilient to disgust and have a healthy sense of humor, locate the disturbingly, inimitable, Visitor Q. I highly suggest TRY before you BUY if possible.

i've read some things about Visitor Q, mostly reviews through amazon, and whileit sounds like a truly fucked up movie,i have that...morbid desire to check it out. Wishi could find a place around here to "try" it out, but gods, can you imagin a Hollywood Video or Blockbuster handling something of that nature. It'd be the firggin' end of civilization as we know it.
I'm still debating on BR...I definately want to get Audition and Fudoh, but they are one of the more "pricey" flicks at Suncoast and no one is gotem up on ebay yet. Plenty of R3 Auditions dammit! But thats another thread altogether!

Visitor Q is more than a little disturbing.

but Happiness of the Katakuris... now THAT is a truly fucked up movie.

If you have a Best Buy near you they carry the unrated Audition for around $20.

What a wacky film that is. It has to be seen to be believed.

The first Miike I've seen was"Ichi the killer".

I've seen a lot since then but it's still my personal favorite. Really wicked.

Still, I recommend "Audition":I'm not easily shocked but this one completely freaked me out!

I've got the uncut SE of Ichi on it's way and I'm hoping that this turns out to be as good as everyone says it is.

It should be noted that the R1 of Katakuris comes out today. Miike is a genius, and the weakest thing I've seen from his is probably City of Lost Souls, though it too has its moments.

Alright dammit-one of two things haveto happen here. either i need to stop frequenting this fine establishment, or you guys have to stop. just stop. I only make so much money a week y'know. (grin)
And i started off this thread with like only two or three titles inmind, and now it is growing in leaps and bounds (adding in as a cause a few other threads about Phone and Dark Water)
(sigh)
I'm gonna have to donate my other testicle to research to afford all these, I just knowit...(but i amhitting Best Buy this weekend,WHOO-HOO!)

Okay, I don't get it....is it just me?
I picked up Audition today and just got done watching it (i grabbed the Chimera release which proclaimsto be the unrated directors cut0 and thought...ehhh...it was alright i guess. It really didn't do anything for me. The vomit stew, the needles, the sawing of the foot. nothing. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a horrible movie, i didn't finish watching it and feel like i did after shit like Ghost Ship or The Ring (american version). It had some good things to it, but do i want to ownit...not really. i would've rather saved it for a rental i think. I don't think it was over hyped for me either, because i have always been hesitant to pick it up (wasn't even sure when it first hit my hollywood video in an R-rated incarnation). I dunno, its like it was just...there. i did enjoy the glee in Asamis face as she sawed through the ankle though. That brought on a smile...
