JOHN CARTER OF TRAILER

Okay yeah, that's looking a little better.

Is this a Stargate sequel?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, no but seriously it looks like it could be very fun to me. For one, unlike Green Lantern the trailer's not actively a turnoff. The lead "John Carter" guy and the settings do very little for me but there's enough in the Stanton name and some of these shots to make me not turn away from it and if it embraces its own ridiculousness it could be a real swell ride. I'll wait on reviews to know if I see it blown up big.

Looks like the message board is pooping all over the place again.

Anyway, yeah, pretty good trailer. Not exactly knocked out by the originality of the images, but the action and the leading man look suitable. I was dubious enough about this project that I wasn't sure it would be the one blockbuster I would go for this March, but this footage suggests it's a lot more appetizing than that Hunger Games silliness.

Looks entertaining at least.  I'll end up checking this one out.  Did I see Captain Titus of the Ultramarines (Mark Strong) in that trailer as well?

People keep saying this isn't a Pixar movie, but the animation on the Tharks says otherwise.

Sure does. I think if it wasn't Stanton I'd have a much bigger problem with it somehow.

Odd.  Because knowing that Stanton is involved makes me more critical of it somehow.

This. And the Tharks look like they're from a different cartoonier movie IMO. The music cue is so blatant and the story is going to seem so "Johnny-Come-Lately" to the unknowing post-AVATAR crowd. I'll probably wait for dvd, but I do love me some creatures on the big screen. Unfortunately, the big arena monster (white ape?) moment and staging looked reminiscent of the hive guardian scene from PRIEST.

I still don't understand why the Tharks being more exaggerated is a problem. I like their look and movements so far, personally.

At the moment, the Tharks feel more like residents of Toon Town on a visit as opposed to characters that are a part of that world.

Eh, that could be "effects aren't quite finished yet" syndrome. I'm honestly not feeling that way, though.

Oh, maybe their look isn't quite done yet from a rendering standpoint, but what's really making me take notice is the general approach to the animation of the Tharks.  They are animated with a more 'cartoony' degree of caricaturization.  I'm seeing this no matter what, but I am very intrigued by the potential for a disconnect between the live-action actors and them.

I guess I thought you were saying that was a *bad* thing....

And yeah, maybe the disconnect will make them seem more 'alien' and all that.

Also, am I the only one who doesn't give a shit that Dejah Thoris actually looks respectably clothed? Some of the people whining about that (not necessarily anyone here) seem like the "Blood and tits make everything better!" crowd.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, but I do question it as an artistic choice.  Won't know for sure till I see the film.

Ah, OK. No thoughts on the Dejah Thoris comment?

This is probably the stupidest nitpick of the day, but while I'm fine with the animation I do kind of wish the Tharks were, well, greener. Full-on pulp martians.

They're pretty fucking green, man.

On that comment, I'm definitely with you.  A movie of this size would never go for anything too risque.  But at the same time, I'm someone who feels that Die Hard 4's PG-13 took away a lot of what made John McClane such a great character.  Rough language and violence don't make a movie better, but I think a lot of people are bitter about these choices being made only because of commercial reasons as opposed to artistic ones.  It's just this sense of everything becoming SAFE and having the piss and vinegar taken out of it.

So I sorta get where such complaints are coming from, even if they sound DUMB when they're articulated badly.

Hey, I said it was stupid, right? So watch me needlessly dwell for one more comment: They're a kind of gray-green that feels like a half-measure, so as to not get too weird, beyond 10-feet tall and 4 arms. And I say, go weird. This flick is going to have enough monochrome problems as it is; the splash of blue blood is the only bit of color I can recall from the trailer. Most of the images all mush together (though that's also the nature of fast-cut trailers). As it is, they kinda blend into the rock and dust.

Probably needs more orange and teal, for that POP. (kidding!)

Just an observation, and the littlest deal possible. I'll be seeing this opening day, with fingers crossed. Deja Thoris looks fine. FNL guy wouldn't have entered my mind for casting, but I'm pulling for him. The glimpses of Dominic West, Mark Strong, and Ciaran Hinds (I think, for a second? haven't checked imdb) were surprising.

There's a lot of Genosian-esque rock in there, but the shots of the cities and stuff have me a bit hopeful there will be something to keep them from getting too monotonous.

Yeah, I get that complaint, although it looks plenty violent and epic to me.

You're totally right, but for some reason the Stanton factor of it makes me forgive that and even enjoy it.

Chris Spider, It is a shame that your question of Dejah Thoris and her wearing of clothes was left...Undressed.  I think that at least she could wear some kind of...Space Bikini.  The outfits worn on...Buck Rogers In the 25th Century worn by...Princess Ardala seem more revealing, and that was a...Tv series.
