We all know about star tantrums, but this is borderline psychotic.

Man, fuck him.  If a flight attendant tells you to turn your shit off, TURN YOUR SHIT OFF.

It was fun seeing his tweets in real time yesterday and for it to be such a big deal today. But also, he's apparently deactivated his Twitter account "for a time being, to focus on 30 Rock" his reps say.

Weird thing was, when he came out of the bathroom he'd grown a full Grizzly Adams-esque beard.

This is why Ron Swanson is the better bear.

I'm with Alec:

Quote:

First off, I would like to apologize to the other passengers onboard the American Airlines flight that I was thrown off of yesterday. It was never my intention to inconvenience anyone with my "issue" with a certain flight attendant.

I suppose a part of my frustration lay with the fact that I had flown American for over 20 years and was brand loyal, in the extreme. The ticketing agents and Admiral's Club staff have always been nothing but abundantly helpful to me, as I have flown hundreds of thousands of miles with the one carrier.

My confusion began when the flight, already a half hour behind schedule, boarded, the door closed, and we proceeded to sit at the gate for another fifteen minutes. I then did what I have nearly always done and that was to pull out my phone to complete any other messaging I had to do before take off. In nearly all other instances, the flight attendants seemed to be unbothered by and said nothing about such activity, by me or anyone else, until we actually were pulling away from the gate.

In this case, while other people were still manipulating their own phones, this one employee singled me out to put my phone away. Afterward, we still sat at the gate. I pulled out my phone again, while others did the same. Again, I was singled out by this woman in the most unpleasant of tones. I guess the fact that this woman, who had decided to make some example of me, while everyone else was left undisturbed, did get the better of me.

However, I have learned a valuable lesson. Airlines in the US are struggling with fuel costs, labor costs, bankruptcies, you name it. It's no secret that the level of service on US carriers has deteriorated to a point that would make Howard Hughes red-faced. Filthy planes, barely edible meals, cuts in jet service to less-traveled locations. One of the big changes, in my time, is in the increase of the post-9/11, paramilitary bearing of much of the air travel business.

September 11th was a horrific day in the airline industry, yet in the wake of that event, I believe carriers and airports have used that as an excuse to make the air travel experience as inelegant as possible.

Most of the flight attendants I have ever encountered still have some remnant of the old idea of service. Add to that the notion that in this day and age, many people have a lot of important work to do, by phone, and would like to do so till the last possible minute. But there are many now who walk the aisles of an airplane with a whistle around their neck and a clipboard in their hands and they have made flying a Greyhound bus experience.

The lesson I've learned is to keep my phone off when the 1950's gym teacher is on duty. That was my fault there, even though this trip was quite a bit different from so many others. But it is sad, I think, that you've got to fly overseas today in order to bring back what has been thrown overboard by US carriers in terms of common sense, style, and service.

Again, my apology to my fellow travelers.

He sounds like he's on the right side of this one. Don't forget he played Juan Trippe for Scorsese, so he knows something about airline service, style and class

Instead of going to the bathroom like a child and banging on the walls he should have made a video of the incident with his cameras video function and shown it to American Airlines and had her fired.

I'd agree but I've had bad days where shit has set me off I shoulda let slide. I just wanted to defend the idea that he had something to be upset about

Upset about yes, psychotic about, no.

I've thrown a few public fits in my time, I wouldn't call fit throwing a psychotic activity

Again, the airline has alot of PR at stake. I wouldn't believe their version of events is 100% accurate, just like it's interesting that Alec neglected to go into details about his bathroom stuff

Take it all with a grain of salt

I don't know, I have an impossible-to-beat friend on WWF who makes me want to beat up a toilet, too.

I get mad, really mad, i'll kick a wall or something.

and flight attendants can be dicks. that said, Baldwin isn't exactly known for his restraint. so...i'll file this under..whatever.

I tend to be an asshole magnet. So from waiters/waitresses to flight attendants and DMV workers..if there's someone having a shitty day we're gonna be rubbing elbows. That said he does seem like a pretty angry guy.

I don't get some of the reactions though. Oscar De La Hoya was on the flight and apparently said the door slamming, etc. was bullshit and that the guy was just trying to play a game. Maybe it's just me but customer service has gone down the shitter. I've had very few good experiences with people that fill these sort of jobs in the last few years so I can't say I disagree with his yammering opinion. I had a flight attendant push my leg (it was more like a kick to the shin) for having my foot "too far" into the isle...it wasn't at all, just a bit of my knee.

I do live on a fucking island though and have to fly everywhere, so frequency could have something to do with it.

It's just a publicity stunt for his new podcast.

Anybody listen to his podcast?

I did. It's odd. Thomas "Biff" Wilson's new one is better.

"they have made flying a Greyhound bus experience"

That's actually a pretty good line.

But was the flight attendant a disgusting little pig? That's the question we should be asking.

And the rest of the people on the plane desereved to be held up even more for his crap?  Of course not. Dude is in the wrong plain and simple.

You can keep those "Flights are short, do we really need bathrooms on planes?" and "Maybe we can figure out a way to have standing passengers on our planes" douchebags.

Agreed. I'm really enjoying Big Pop Fun. The most recent one where he sings about Gary Busey was quite funny.

Oh I don't want them. Ryan Air certainly have antagonised and lost a lot of customers but I'm sure they've made calculations that they'll gain more through how they price things being the overriding concerns among enough people and so far that seems to be working. The parallels between them and a no frills bus service have been made many times before which is why I threw it up there.

Also, the CEO who said that about bathrooms, standing passengers and my personal favourite that they only need one pilot as he's only known of one case of a pilot having a heart but still being able to land the plane ... well I'm inclined to think that these are statements to attract publicity and attention more than anything else. Standing passengers I'm sure would never get past the safety regulators for starters.

From what I've read, the plane was sitting at the gate, not moving. And from what I've read on every tech blog on the planet, personal electronic devices do not interfere in any way with avionics or any other onboard electronic systems. Baldwin might have have been being a complete dick about it, I dunno, but those airline rules are hopelesly outdated.

I read something about that in a WIRED magazine a long time ago.  Basically, "Yeah.  The rules are outdated and kinda pointless, but don't be a dick about it."

The rule is just there for people's personal piece of mind...people are frightened easily, and do stupid things when they're frightened.

You know, that actually does kinda make sense. Flying brings out some unusual anxieties in some folks.

Is it weird that every time I hear the name "Alec Baldwin" I hear it as "Arec Badwin" in Kim Jong Il-Team America voice?

Every time I hear people are afraid of flying I can only laugh. Flying is great fun and much safer than driving. Irrational fears shouldn't be indulged, those people need to be told to chill and deal with reality.. If I was bored and iPadding on a plane, I'd sure be annoyed to have to turn it off for no reason other than to provide comfort to the ignorant

And I bet you're afraid of harmless snakes, cockroaches or spiders.

Oh those only spiders terrify me, but I wouldn't ask someone to turn off their phone because I was worried spiders might be lurking in the area

The passengers don't ask, the airline people do...thus the passengers feel it's necessary and become irrationally afraid if it doesn't happen.  People are afraid to fly, they will always be afraid to fly, just like you're afraid of harmless spiders.

I personally demand that the airline apologize to Jack Donaghy. Do they not know that he Reaganed not that long ago? This man is responsible for MILF Island people! Let him play words with friends! As a school teacher, I only wish I could talk to my students the way he talks to his children!  I would share my canteen with him!

All joking aside, I know cell phones don't interfere, but just put it in your pocket till you lift off and then tell the flight attendant the phone is on airplane mode. That is what I when I flew in July.

Hang on - so society has to pitch itself to it's stupidest members now?

That's why the west is done.

That post could have used a few more "declines" and Roman Empire mentions, though.

Certainly doesn't have to, but people, especially Americans are bred to be stupid...so they'll go with whatever the gov't decides, no matter how ludicrous.  We live in a dumbed down society.
