The Evil Dead Remake Goes To Middle Earth
post #2 of 14

I'm sure they'll have an equally rugged and appropriate location in New Zealand.

I'd also like to add that, at this point, anyone who thinks we still have a chance of getting a full-blown Evil Dead 4 is insane.  The ONLY way the "original" franchise will get continued is if this reboot is a hit and Raimi decides to team up the survivor(s) with Ash in a sequel.  Unless that happens, I think we can all kiss the chance of seeing Ashley J. Williams and his boomstick on the silver screen again goodbye.

I can't for the life of me understand why they'd go to middle earth to film this. Go to literally any cabin in any forested area of North America and you're set. It's a movie about people taking a weekend to smoke pot in the woods. Why would you set it in a location that looks like it required a 23 hour flight to reach?

Please. Without A Paddle proved that if you want your wilderness movie to be a raging success you MUST take it to the land of the kiwi.

"So instead of a SMart housewares employee, they'll explain workshed proficiency by including a mechanic?" I ponder.

I read a plot synopsis the other day that basically broke the camel's back for me. They are over complicating this to the point that it's laughable. I mean, I'll still see it, but this is ridiculous. Among the recently announced remakes, or ones that are already shooting, it's the only one I'm not really looking forward to.

If I'm not mistaken, both Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess were produced by Raimi and both shows were shot in New Zealand. So I think he has a ton of good relationships and connections there which will give him more freedom in shooting and probably also allow the budget to stretch further.

The only reason I liked the originals was Raimi's batshit direction...everything else about them was ridiculous.  And the director they picked for this made a terrible short.  Oh, and can't stand Diablo Cody.  No interest in seeing this.

Raimi's direction and the craziness that is in every film is what makes these films what they are. Of course, can't forget about Bruce Campbell. They're bringing in this new guy, Diablo Cody did that rewrite. I'm not a fan of hers either to be honest. Never saw Jennifer's Body, and I hated Juno.

Raimi keeps talking about the better effects they can do now, that I wonder why he just doesn't remake it himself. Pretty sure everyone would be a lot more open minded about him doing the remake himself, but then there would be even more volcanic nerd rage at why he just doesn't do Evil Dead 4.

The nerd rage over Evil Dead IV needs to end.  It is never going to happen.  It was never going to happen.  Phantasm V?  Yeah, that could happen (though it becomes less and less likely each passing year).  Evil Dead IV?  Nope.  While I completely believe that Raimi sincerely wants/wanted to make one, I could never see him actually buckling down to do it beyond tossing out a few scripts pages here and there.  Drag Me To Hell is the closest we are ever going to get to Evil Dead IV.  The fanboys just need to give up on it.............................................and this is coming from someone who would give his left nut for the project to actually happen.  Let it go!

As for the remake?  I'll reserve any judgment until I see a trailer.  The visuals are what is going to make or break this reboot.

I've never heard of those shows but I have heard of Cleopatra 2525 and Jack Of All Trades.

Seriously?

One of the reasons I adore the EVIL DEAD trilogy is that old school handmade vibe. That they used stop-motion, dangerous rigs, puppets, actual messy fluids, etc. A ton of the creativity came out of their limitations and guerrilla tactics. The obvious  skills that shone through in spite of those limitations made them a cut above other low-budget film-makers of their time (and even now frankly). That charm and creativity and passion for film-making has inspired me to create my own stuff over the years. Recent glossy FX? Not so much.

A fair point, but I just felt like the charm of the original (I'm not a huge fan) owed to the idea that these every day folks went on a normal weekend excursion that suddenly took a hard left turn into the insane. When you shoot in NEW ZEALAND, the cabin in the woods no longer looks as if it could exist in your small town, and the vast wilderness seems a natural fit for the supernatural, meaning that when the horror happens it's less jarring and less of a surprise
