Anyone else feel that Dark Water had a Don't Look Now (as well as Ringu) vibe to it? From the quick glimpses of the girl with the slicker, the water logged locales (Venice in Don't Look Now, rain soaked Japan in Dark Water), to the tortured parent and of course the final tragic encounter with the "ghostly child".

While there are a lot of things different about the films, I couldn't help comparing them (especially the imagery) as I watched Dark Water last week.

Anyone else feel this way?

not a bad little flick.....kinda f'ed up ending

Nakada takes a lot of influence from the Euro filmmakers, I wouldn't be surprised if there some of Roeg's masterpiece in there.

'Dark Water' was very similar to 'The Ring' and Nakata's almost starting to feel like, to me at least, the M. Night of Japan. Same tone and pacing in all his movies, same dreary atmosphere. Not that it's bad, I love all three of M. Night's, just a bit frustrating.

difference is, Nakada doesn't try to shove his "message" so far down your throat that it ends up hangin' out your arsehole.

Plus, he's bleak as hell.

For the most part I agree, but the "resolutions" of Shyamalan's films go one direction, while Nakata's endings go... well a different way altogether. In that way, they are very different.

But we digress.

Anyone else see Don't Look Now? Do you feel that Dark Water may have a bit of influence from roeg's film?

Has Nakata ever listed his influences?

(edited to protect myself from the deriding comments concerning "Don't Look Know")

he mentions something about his influences in this ain't it cool news interview:

you've got to scroll down a bit.

All right, I've never seen "Dark Water," but I have a question for those who saw "Don't Look Now." This involves MASSIVE SPOILERS for the ending of "Don't Look Now":

I know there are metaphorical implications involved in the ending, but taken literally, we are seeing a serial killer midget who slashes people's throats. Did anyone else think about this and go, "huh"? Does she lure her victims over to a step-ladder she's standing on so she can reach their jugulars?

MASSIVE SPOILERS and AWKWARDLY SET-UP JOKE over.

No, but she does hide in dark alleys, pretending to be a crying little girl, luring people to lean over her with concern.

It's more effective than you think. Smartass.

P.S.
She's a dwarf, not a midget, and she's really got no problem with reach. See the movie.

No offence to any vertically challenged chewers, but what are the differences between dwarves and midgets?
If I'm not mistaken, dwarves have normal sized heads with small bodies, and midgets have more a more proportional sized head. Dwarves tend to be taller on the whole.

I think nowadays, and person of small physical stature thinks of "midget" as a slur, making the old way seperation obsolete. Kinda.

Wow, that got weird... I'll have you know that the Inspector stands at a towering 12' 5"!

Seriously, I can see your point about the similarities between the two... I think anybody who has seen "Don't Look Now" has come away "influenced"...

Well, if I'd thought about it at all, I wouldn't have been able to make a dumb joke about it. But yeah, that actually makes a lot of sense. And don't tell me to watch the movie again -- that shit fucked me up.

Fair enough. At least you actually watched it. In your earlier post, I thought you said you hadn't.
