This looks identical to about 20 other movies I've seen in the last five years.  Yawn.  

 

Bonus points, though, for the utterly ludicrous casting of Rihanna as a naval officer.

I really liked BATTLE LA, but it more than sated my appetite for this sort of action. This is uninteresting to me beyond its value as a special effects reel, but I just want to add that:

 

1) The water effects are all kind of terrible, given that this is a tent pole. I know it's early footage, but IMHO it's just not up to snuff

 

2) the kind of crazy cgi camera angles on the ship to ship stuff are so boring. They need to shoot this movie like a traditional naval war film, and instead it's TRANSFORMERS meets VAN HELSING

 

3) Rhiana appears to be stunt casting of the worst kind, since not one line she speaks in the trailer is believable. She seems like a terrible actress

 

And last but not least... That guy playing the main character is just not a leading man. No presence, kind of off putting in appearance, ETC. It's all the more painful when you see Alexander Sarsgard there and then realize that nope, its that other kind of anonymous guy who is actually the hero

Princess Kate, Oh No...You Sunk My Battleship...Expectations!  Not really.  Just kidding!  Admiral Shane and co vs Aliens?  Awesome!  Rihanna looks...Fine!  A...Terrible actress?  Me, I cannot stand...Meryl Streep!  Rihanna looks like a more...Well Rounded, actress than she does.  Liam Neeson in charge of a US Navy Fleet?  Nuff Said!

Said it before, but Berg is one of the few directors who can do good action and fight scenes.  The trailers haven't been great for this, but as Mr. Beaks said recently, hopefully folks don't write this off too quickly.

There are a lot more directors who can do good fight and action scenes than people think. Is Berg one of them? Sure. But it makes me damned sad to see him wasting his talent on something this dumb-looking.

 

And yes, I've read the recent edit-bay visits where Berg goes on and on about how you need to care about what's going on. I agree with him, but his comments sound suspiciously in press-release mode.

Ah. Seems much more interesting than yet another toy-based alien invasion story. I wish Berg the best in using any clout he gets from Battleship to get it made.

 

That doesn't change the fact that I'm not wasting my money on it.

This has been my main complaint all along. I wanted to see modern high tech war ships engaged in an apocalyptic final battle US v. CHINA, the only match up that makes sense

 

Instead we get this silliness

No, they didn't make it based on the game, they adapted the book that the game was based on.

Princess Kate, You're right.  A...US Naval Fleet vs CHINA, would be...Smashing!  Obviously CHINA would have...Plate armor.  Crystal and Pottery could only last so long against Battleships, Destroyers etc.  Also the...CHINA...Cabinet would fall quickly even if it were made of OAK!  Yes, I realize you mean...China the Country, and not Family Heirloom...CHINA, including mugs, dishes etc.

The United States has more aircraft carriers than the rest of the world put together. They're also presently more sophisticated than anything else in the world and the next class being manufactured which should start appearing around 2015 or so are even more advanced. Also, considering every aircraft carrier is part of an integrated group with many other ships with different advanced capabilities (including anti missile defences), It would be no contest between the US and any opponent for a long time to come.

Just saying any real world naval battles involving the US are probably going to be a bit lopsided for the time being.

 

Supposedly there was talk that one of the aircraft carriers the Chinese bought from the Russians was going to be turned into a hotel but I think it's now being used for training purposes (not for deployment).

 

They should probably just worry about making a profit from this movie first before thinking about sequels. The whole project sounds like a big gamble to me.
