What films are you looking forward to in 2012?

Thread Starter

A lot of really cool films coming out next year.

Here are my faves:

1. Prometheus - I've got absurdly high expectations for this one. Can this prequel be as good as Alien?

2. Judge Dredd - It can't be as bad as the one with Stallone.

3. World War Z - I hope the zombies who don't run.

4. Gravity - Alfonso Cuaron directed the brilliant Children of Men. Will this film be as good?

5. Beyond the Black Rainbow - What is this film about? I have no idea, but the trailer freaks me out:

Well, that was my list. Tell us about what films you are most looking forward to.

SAVAGES and LOOPER both come out on the same day. That's gonna be a good weekend.

Prometheus, The Dark Knight Rises and the Avengers. Obviously some others will sneak in there. Just not sure what the schedule is yet.

Django Unchained, The Hobbit, Gravity, Skyfall, Savages, Looper, Dark Knight Rises, and Prometheus are all big on my radar, among others. It'll be festival season before I find smaller / artier fare to look forward to.

But the movie I'm looking anticipating more than any other? At this point, I think it's actually Les Miserables. I LOVE the play, and the talent that's being enlisted for it is really getting my hopes up. Plus there hasn't been a great, epic movie musical in... ever.

I want Les Mis to be JOHN ADAMS good, but I have a feeling it will be merely King's Speech good.

This is pretty much my big list, with Prometheus at the top. Except Savages, which I now need to look up. Not as psyched for Avengers as I feel I should be.

If you just look up Savages, you might not see what's so exciting besides maybe the cast. Read the book. You won't be sorry.

This movie is INCREDIBLE.

It's really fucking weird and out there, so I imagine it will turn off people with its slow pace and completely vague storyline.

Essentially (and I tread lightly), it's about this mad scientist who has been holding this girl with telekinetic powers hostage. Apparently as she ages, she may hold the key to entering another universe. She may or may not be his daughter. He may also be squabbling with his superiors who have different plans for her. Everybody may or may not be insane. It's also set in some terrifying version of 1983.

Anyway, I'm most excited for FRANK OR FRANCIS.

It's the next Charlie Kaufman movie.

I'm not 100% sure I have the casting right, but essentially, Jack Black is a hateful blogger who constantly slings criticisms at filmmaker Steve Carrell.

Carrell makes the awards-friendly "You," which he writes, directs, scores, produces, and plays every role. He wins ALL THE AWARDS.

Also, Nicolas Cage is a disgraced comedian famous for a series of movies called "Fat Dad" who is an Oscars host.

And Kevin Kline is one of a duo of filmmaker brothers frustrated by "You" so he builds a machine to create the most awards-friendly movie in the world. The machine is also played by Kline.

Also, it's a musical.

I've got a good feeling for 2012.

1) Prometheus

2) The Avengers

3) Armor of God 3: Chinese Zodiac

4) The Expendables 2

5) Lockout

Gabe T: You have seen Beyond the Black Rainbow? I am so jealous.

Here are some more films for 2012:

6. John Dies at the End - The books was pretty funny, and a bit scary at times. Don Coscarelli directs.

7. Silent Hill 2 - This one is based on the third Silent Hill game. One of my favourite survival horror games.

8. Ghost Rider 2 - Its directed by the lads behind Crank, so it could be really good. Althought they also made Gamer, which was lousy.

I'll add:

Wettest County - John Hillcoat hasn't disappointed yet.. and that cast!!

SKYFALL

BULLET TO THE HEAD

I said this last year at this time, so I'll reiterate, because it never came out:   New Whit Stillman film, damnit!!

2012 kind of frightens me. We're out of Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, The Matrix, Harry Potter, Nolan Batmans, Pirates has run out of steam, and The Avengers is finally here. Yes, Marvel movies will continue, but any sequels won't be able to compete with the momentum that Iron Man started when Nick Fury appeared onscreen.

What will be the next big thing?!

Having just read the books, I am curious how The Hunger Games will turn out.

Bartleby_Scriven, Well there will be many more...MARVELous properties.  The Guardians Of The Galaxy, Dr. Strange and other...Magical Journeys could be taken.  I am hoping that eventually...Ms. Marvel and Thanos will Join...Captain Mar-Vell on the Silver Screen.  The Kree-Skrull War could be...Awe-Inspiring!

I don't know Fleed, it was the interactive nature of connecting all the movies together and waiting to see what character would be introduced next.

I get a feeling that won't be fresh anymore if they try to replicate it for Avengers 2.

It's pretty amazing to me how I've gone from "One movie or bust!" to total convert on The Hobbit.  The production diaries Jackson has been posting just absolutely sold me.  I'd still prefer it be one film, but I'm much more on board now than at any point since the project was first announced.

Bartleby_Scriven, Marvel doesn't have to connect everything to...Avengers 2!  Maybe...The Defenders will happen!  Dr. Strange, Valkyrie, Night Hawk,  She-Hulk (replacing...HULK) would be an...Awesome film in it's own right.  Really, there have been so many guest heroes in The Defenders, the team could consist of anyone!  Maybe Power Man and Iron Fist can be good moderately budgeted fare so...Power Man and Iron Fist could happen.  I would love to see a S.H.I.E.L.D. Film!  Nick Fury, Val (Fury's Gal Pal from the original series) Dum Dum Dugan, Gabe Jones and co vs HYDRA or A.I.M.!

John Carter's making me nervous. It has the potential to suck and worse (for Andrew Stanton), flop, but there's just something about it....that gives me hope it'll pull through (Andrew Stanton)

The Avengers

Skyfall

Prometheus

The Master (a director's follow-up to one of my favorite films ever? Okay!)

Django Unchained (see above)

Lincoln

The Dark Knight Rises

The Hobbit

I was going to add Inside Llewyn Davis, but that doesn't appear to be coming out until 2013.

World War Z

Prometheus easily gets my number one slot, followed by Avengers and Dark Knight Rises; also interested in John Carter, Brave, Lincoln, Hobbit and Looper.

My cynic pick for movie im dreading is World War Z, which i have some unexplainable feeling of dread towards for some reason.

Guys, guys! STOKER. How have we forgotten Chan-wook Park?! Making his English debut!!

Cogan's Trade - Andrew Dominik and Brad Pitt re-teaming after The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, with Ray Liotta, Richard Jenkins, Sam Shepherd, as well as Sopranos alums James Gandolfini, Vincent Curatola and Max Casella rounding out the cast?

YES. PLEASE.

Seven Psychopaths - Martin McDonough and Colin Farrell re-teaming after In Bruges , with Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson rounding out the cast?

YES. PLEASE.

Only God Forgives - Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling re-teaming after Drive?

If I had to pick only one dubious 3-D release of a technical-marvel but flawed movie with terrible dialogue and ethnic stereotypes, I'd rather see the Titanic 3-D.

My current "Top 10 Most Anticipated Releases of 2012":

1. Prometheus

2. Django Unchained

3. Skyfall

5. The Dark Knight Rises

6. The Avengers

7. The Expendables II

8. John Carter

9. John Dies At The End

10. Riddick III: Dead Man Stalking

Others I'm looking forward to...

47 Ronin, The Amazing Spider-Man, Antiviral, Argo, The Bourne Legacy, Bullet To The Head, Cabin In The Woods, Cogan's Trade, Cosmopolis, Dark Shadows, Dredd, Frank or Francis, The Gangster Squad, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, G.I. No doubt I'm probably forgetting a handful of films.

Just looking at these lists, it's going to be a big year for Joseph Gordon-Levitt

TDKR

Lincoln

Premium Rush

Looper

Django

Good for him, the guy deserves to become a household name. Other stuff I'm looking forward to:

Prometheus (wasn't completely sold until the trailer, but damn that's a great trailer)

Avengers

Cabin in the Woods (not usually a horror fan, but I'll watch most anything with Joss Whedon, and it's been too long since Amy Acker was on my TV)

The Hobbit

Gravity (I'm a lot less excited since we ended up with Bullock instead of the other names floated, but it's still Cuaron)

Chronicle (Could be crap, but I got a serious Kid Miracleman vibe from the trailer, which intrigues me)

Brave (It's a Pixar film that isn't Cars. Until proven otherwise, I'll assume that means it's great)

ALL of these. Especially "Cogan's Trade". So glad Dominik didn't get put in permanent director's jail after "Jesse James" tanked.

Off the top of my head...

Django Unchained

Prometheus

TDKR

Avengers

The Hobbit

The Grey

Gravity

Having read the Django script, I gotta say next Christmas can't get here fast enough.

I also gotta say it's the weirdest choice for a Christmastime release since, well, Dragon Tattoo. Slavery! Rape! Bring the kids!

I now think those exact five words should be the tagline.

The second half of 2012 is going to be packed to the brim with JGL:

July - The Dark Knight Rises

August - Premium Rush

September - Looper

November - Lincoln

December - Django Unchained

Now if only he can film a quick role in something getting an October release....

Yeah, I recently had a gander at the Django script and was enjoying it so much I actually stopped reading it to avoid spoiling the first viewing too much. It's damned good.

Yes to all of these. Also The Awakening from the writer of Ghostwatch, starring Rebecca Hall and Dominic West.

And as someone who was raised on the kind of film/TV shows this is obviously inspired by, I'm also really looking forward to The Reprisalizer from Matthew "Garth Marenghi" Holness, although that looks like it's a 2013 release. Can't even type that title without chuckling and thinking of Edward Woodward.

Hansel & Gretel just got bumped to 2013.

The official reason is that they want to capitalize on the fame that Renner will (probably) gain from The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy.  Smells like bullshit to me.  It was originally supposed to be released in less than two months (March 2nd) and we haven't been shown anything so far beyond a few stills.  It appears we have another shitty fairytale flick on our hands.

I keep seeing reports that Tarantino wrapped shooting on Django Unchained today, and that several months of post-production will follow.  But surely that can't be right, can it?

I think they started in November so it could be correct.
