The only thing that worries me is that I'm not positive that Some Other Guy isn't Tatum. It's really hard to tell from the trailer.

Some Other Guy is actor DJ Cotrona, who is playing "Flint".  As for Tatum.....

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

He filmed for less than 2 weeks and Marlon Wayans (who isn't back) already dropped references back in the casting stage about them all dying.  Duke is a goner!

Here's the cast....

JOE:

General Joe Colton - Bruce Willis

Roadblock - Dwayne Johnson

Snake Eyes - Ray Park

Flint - D.J. Cotrona

Lady Jaye - Adrianne Palicki

Jinx - Elodie Yung

Mouse - Joseph Mazzello

Cross-Country - Stephen Martines

Tunnel Rat - Eddie Hargitay

Blind Master - RZA

Havoc - Matt Gerald

Clutch - Jim Palmer

Grunt - Ryan Hansen

Snake Eyes' wolf, Timber, is in the film as well.

COBRA:

Cobra Commander - ???

Zartan - Arnold Vosloo/Jonathan Pryce

Storm Shadow - Lee Byung-hun

Firefly - Ray Stevenson

And, of course, we have the great Walton Goggins as 'Warden Nigel James'.  Also, James MOTHERFUCKING Carville!

I want Channing Tatum to get NAPALMED with the sorriest look on his face right before that happens. If he can even muster a sorry look. Dude only has one look to him, so maybe I'm asking for too much.

He seems earnest enough, but he is just blank and wooden before the camera, I've yet to see him deliver a compelling line. If he were to disappear from the movie scene entirely I'd consider it good news

It would be great if Stevenson was the one to land the killing blow

Huh...that's actually not a bad idea. I can't stand the guy but I can totally see it...and it's pretty good.

I think Thomas Jane could rock Shipwreck pretty hard too.

I'm surprised people remember Channing Tatum in GI Joe enough to dislike him.

Was Duke anybody's favorite Joe?

Yup, this one looks like its throwing away every single thing that didnt work/sucked from the first one (Say, the protagonists, Snake Eyes uniform, those fucking mech suits, the idiocy about the baroness being "not really evil", cobra commander's stupid ass look and plot...i could go on al day) and replacing it with things that are exactly what you expect in a Gi Joe movie (say, the Rock using Roadblock's massive gun like it weights nothing, the look of Cobra, that shot of the white house).

I'll add my hat to the lack of Shipwreck; although i'd rather see Beach-head or Low Light as well.

The only thing that would make this perfect is if they made this a soft-reboot of the first one (lke the Hulk films) and wiped Cobra Commander, Destro and Baroness from the original so they could make them work this time (A co worker's crazy theory(which seems to have been done in the comics before) for this is that the "president" isnt Zartan at all, but Cobra Commander himself; the imprisoned Cobra Commander is the real Zartan)

I could live with that, specially if it leads to Vooslo in a awesome Zartan costume.

It would be even greater if later on the movie, they probed his brain with that awesomely stupid device from the first flick,

Playing Shipwreck would give Slater a reason to use his Nicholson impression. Didn't the Shipwreck of the cartoon talk like Nicholson?

Personally, I was angrier about what they did with The Baroness.  Oh HELL no.

If this happens, that's great. The first film was just crap.

Yep. In fact, Shipwreck was based on Nicholson in The Last Detail.

I actually wish that Marlon Wayans returned in this one. Normally he's friggin' annoying, but in the first, he was one of the best things about it. Tatum "acting" alongside him only further enhanced that.

I'm not ENTIRELY convinced by the trailer, but the action sequences look like great IDEAS, so I hope that carries. Also, that cast.

-Burnt by how they might be offing everyone from the first movie. Cheap ploy. I have no problem with Tatum if you surround him with THIS cast.

-Jon Chu directed the third STEP UP, which was like the WARRIORS of dance movies. I actually think he's a big upgrade over Sommers.

-Again, I need to understand how they'll deal with the Cobra Commander thing, because I'm totally bummed you could see this happening from the first movie on, that being JGL opting out of a sequel because he was "too big." Though, looking at his resume, he's probably just "too busy." Ray Stevenson allays this fear somehow, because Ray Stevenson is the best dude ever.

I agree. Wayans had a good presence, and with Tatum's death they could have bumped him up to lead. I think if he toned down some of the humor he could have been compelling

Finally watched the trailer now I'm home.

As someone who's only ever watched the trailer for the first film and has only a vague notion of the original concept anyway (seriously, here in Oz there were a few action figures around but there was no GI Joe cartoon down here, so it was always something I knew about as "an American thing" growing up) I gotta say that looks like a tonne more fun than the last outing. I actually wouldn't mind seeing that.

Dwayne helps. Dwayne makes (almost) everything better. Bruce at the end was fun too.

He's basically a cross between Nicholson and Popeye.

You guys keep this up and I'm not going to be able to imagine anyone BUT Christian Slater ever playing Shipwreck on the big screen.

As awesome as it would be to have JGL back, I wasn't shocked at all with his absence.  After all, Cobra Commander is now masked and has an altered voice...........which basically means anyone can play him.  That's obviously him standing between President Zartan and Stevenson, so we know he's in the movie.  The better question is where are Destro and Baroness?  Is CC just being a dick and letting them sweat it out in the slammer longer?  We know Miller isn't back and I've never come across anything about Eccleston (though I guess Destro could be played by anyone now as well).  Saying "all the Joes are dead" is an easy way to eliminate the heroes who aren't returning.  It's a lot harder to do that with the villains when you have one of the three incarcerated ones walking around on screen and the other two are (currently) conspicuously absent.

I'm also not clear on which cast members had sequel options in their contracts.  I'm pretty sure only some of them did (Tatum and Quaid for sure).  Oh well, they are still bringing back at least 5 actors, so it isn't like they dumped absolutely everyone.

Well, if all the Joes are dead, then presumably President Zartan ordered a strike on the Resolute as well, which was where Cobra Commander, Destro, and Baroness were being held.  I'm betting he pulls CC out to 'question' him, then orders the strike on The Pit and the Resolute, based on intelligence obtained from Cobra Commander during questioning, conveniently killing two of CC's lackeys in the process.

I swear less thought went into this idea than it seems like.

Hahaha, that's a great way to describe that flick.  I own it on BR w/ pride.  Haven't even seen the 1st two.

This looks really fun.  I vaguely recall Elodie Yung from B13: Ultimatum as the cup ramen slurping Chinese gang leader that likes to whip her hair.

Looks like a blast, thanks to Rock and Bruce, SnakeEyes looking great here, Adrianne Palicki NOT wearing a Wonder Woman costume, and the WHite House Cobra takeover shot. After seeing the ninjas swinging about, I was shocked to learn SS wasn't back as director. That smelled just like VAN HELSING.

Yeah, this completely looks like Stephen Sommers movie. What's he up to? Van Helsing notwithstanding, I think there's a place for him to be making movies in Hollywood.

Yeah, the only problem I have with the cliff scene is the transition between real stuntmen and CGI ninjas. Hopefully, it will still be a cool action scene despite that.

I actually thought the CGI was pretty good and well-integrated in those shots, but I'm watching on a pretty modestly-sized computer monitor, so who knows. Might look bad on the (a) big(ger) screen

Yeah, it's not a HUGE problem, but I can kind of tell when they switch.

Whoa whoa whoa...are we saying the original G.I. Joe wasn't a serious film? Because I'm about 75% of the way through this Master's Thesis and I think it might be too late to change topics.

Finish that thesis Splatoon!  Once you're done I'll let you borrow my Master's Thesis on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secert of the Ooz

I'm still waiting for Tax Master's response to Justin. I am very curious about his ideal Joe film.

That said, I love this trailer. I love the goofiness, I love the Rock, I love the techno-cized White Stripes, I love Tyra Colette in a red dress, and Bruce. There is so much to love here.

I'm too lazy to look up the info right now, but I know he has a number of projects in the works...................one of which Spielberg is producing.  I don't think you have to worry about him disappearing anytime soon.

The only movie I loved more than this one in 2009 was Inglourious Basterds.  I will be there on day one for this one.  I love the Rock.

There's a difference between thinking something is "good" and "dumb fun", mind you. I think Rise of Cobra is enjoyably stupid, with some excellent hammy villainy provided by Christopher Eccleston and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Plus, hey, Sommers can actually film a fucking action scene.

This looks to be much in the same vein. I look at these films as the modern equivalent of an 80s actioner like Commando.

I liked some of the ideas, characters, and performances of the first one. I agree that the villains were very entertaining. I also appreciated how the plot was as simple as just "good guys vs. bad guys" without too much exposition, plot twists, and machinations (I hate when comic book or action movies complicate things too much as they're trying to be 'epic').

The execution was sloppy, though. The frenzied editing of the action scenes and clunky back story (like the laughable flashback scenes about Duke and Cobra Commander or Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes) annoyed me, as did Tatum's unbelievably wooden performance and the shitty, shitty characterizations of Scarlett and Ripcord (I don't blame the actors for that, they just had awful dialog). Fortunately, there was fun to be had, despite the shoddiness of the thing. I definitely left it thinking there was potential for a much better sequel, and I hope that's what will come to fruition now.

I really hope that frame grab of Ray Stevenson indeed includes what Cobra Commander is going to look like in the movie. I don't know much about "G.I. Joe" (I don't recall ever watching its cartoon and I know I never read the comics), but I've always liked that helmet design. I was disappointed that it was excluded from the first film. I know people said they had to change his look because the character has worn something over his face that makes him look like a KKK leader, but the helmet never caused that problem.

Superbowl spot is out.  In my opinion, not as decent-looking as the trailer:  invoking the "immortal words of JZ" for inspiration?  Bit much for me, even with the on-the-sleeve goofiness.  Then again, I've never been into G.I. Joe, so I suppose this flick was never meant for me in the first place.

I guess this is Dwayne Johnson's shot at a franchise vehicle.  It's like nobody but him, Snake Eyes, and Bruce Willis exist.

So he says the quote, and then they actually play the fucking song as if we didn't just hear him say it?  Ugh.  That was shit.

I remember watching this on cable during a turkey and booze induced haze and being amazed how much I enjoyed the power suit scene and how completely awesome the pacing was.  It just kept going and getting cooler and cooler.  It was built like an action set piece should be.

Without wanting to handcuff myself to a frothing Tax Master, I maintain that this property could be filmed with at least a Marvel level of seriousness, like Cap America. The GI Joe: Resolute animated film was a reasonably mature upgrade on the 80's cartoon.

Of course, it probably won't happen. But yeah, I'll go to this (if drunk friends approve on the evening in question) or buy a delete-bin copy. I'm a huge fan of the characters and collected the toys as a kid, but I'm realistic about what happens on the way from toy shelf to screen (and back again!)

Sommers is abysmal, but the G.I. Joe brand is pretty stupid to begin with.  Taking into account his butchering of some more promising material, such as Van Helsing, the stupidity of the first film is just an indifferent sigh, not an infuriating misfire.  If you like seeing a simplistic Saturday morning cartoon adapted into a simplistic feature film, chances are you'll eat it up.

Well hey at least you're not being condescending or judgmental about it or anything

Just saying, G.I. Joe is a brand that practically invites hack directors to the table.  Not much you can do with it.

Right, and Van Helsing offered far richer opportunities. Monsters vs. monster hunters > super soldiers vs. terrorists. Because that's a reasoned argument.
