I've got a line on airfare for $360 round trip from Chicago to Brussels. It is non-refundable so before I do this I need to know how much hotels and a car will be over there anybody know off hand?

I've never traveled out of the U.S. as a civilian before do I need a passport? I imagine I do so how complicated is that?

You definitely need a passport and I would suggest you get one soon (depending on when you'll be leaving) as the wait can take up to 2 weeks. And if you expedite it (because you waited too long) they charge you mega extra for it.

As for currency etc. go to http://www.xe.com/ucc/ to get an idea of what the funds exchange rate looks like.

You should probably repost this in another forum too, Culture and Free Form would be more appropriate. Hope this all helps and good luck planning your trip

Thanks girlcreature! This is all on the spur of the moment, like everything else I do, so I am totally unorganized for something like this but I always manage. I booked my flight and hotel reservations. I'll be in Brussels for all of the good movies! I still need to find out about renting a car as I plan on taking a side trip to Amsterdam! wink SHould be a great time even though I'm going alone. I'm pretty outgoing and usually wind up hooking up with people. I need to brush up on my German as well. I took it for two years and all I can say is "I have a pencil". I don't think that'll get me very far. Thanks again and if anybody else has any suggestions I'll take em!

Good luck on the trip Floydian ... If you've got some free time to travel around, you really should see Prague in the Czech Republic ... I had never been out of the USA until last year, and I visited Prague - HOLY SHIT, can you say "Stendahl Syndrome" ?!?!?!? ... The architecture and sense of history had my palms sweating ...

Anyways, have fun and enjoy the films !!!

Thanks Elmie, Prague sounds interesting. Me being the photographer that I am I'll have to make that a stop.

Well, I got a couple of things to say there...

First of all, you don't need to rent a car. It's expensive and it's just not the way people deal in Europe. The metro and trains are well-organized and I think that's all you'll need.

The hotels are pretty expensive most of the time, but if you're sure to make the trip, I can try to find you a student room somewhere, which would be a lot cheaper.

You have to buy the tickets in advance for the festival. You should contact the staff then, coz the biggest movies sell quickly out.

You definitely don't need German in Belgium (nor in the Netherland!); national languages are French and Dutch. But most people speak English so that shouldn't be a problem!

Any more questions?
