THE DICTATOR HAS ARRIVED

Someone needs to overthrow and replace this trailer...

Laughed at the footrace, and the lady breaking the brick with her Boobs (say that five times fast!). The rest: no.

Cohen doesn't really make stuff that cuts well into a trailer.

I'm optimistic about this, but I kinda think the "bomb the Empire State Building" gag was in poor taste. Maybe it was just Reilly's delivery.

I didn't laugh once. I'll spend my ten dollars else where.

I've long felt that Cohen works best when he is portraying his characters within the confines of "reality", when he has to keep his act just believable enough that the rubes he is filming will fall for it

When he is left to indulge his comedic impulses without those constraints, it really is at times like a slightly funnier alternate universe Mike Meyers. I think that was clear going back to the remarkably unfunny ALI G IN DA HOUSE, a pale shadow of the side splitting UK  ALI G SHOW

Like I said in the article, I like Cohen..................................but this is currently falling right in the Myers/Sandler ballpark.  Not a good sign.

Only the race and the Empire State line did anything for me.

I get that no one liked it, but really, we should like it less. This is a much worse trailer than the Stooges one from last week. It looks very bad.

The only chance of this working out is if the movie is somehow really, really dark, and they can't quite cut a trailer for it. Reilly's line and the foot race hint that might be possible. Alternatively, this might be as painful as the worst of Mike Myers. It sure as hell looks like a financial bomb, no matter what.

That was definitely questionable, but there was also about 25 seconds of actual comedy in it. I think a red band trailer would be a bit more telling.

Aren't trailers for comedies supposed to be funny? Seriously, that was wretched.

But he said "WTF? What. The. Fadabadabadana!"

You're telling me you were not enthralled? Swift and Wilde are rolling in their graves. From jealousy and awe at such wordplay, of course.

However, isn't it the case that these days, making trailers is a professional art in itself and handed over to a specialist department just to make it?

The alarming implication is maybe there just isn't sufficient appropriate material for them to make a good trailer and that would be a worry for the film makers.

Yes, I was referencing your article in my post! Well written, thanks!

And.... It turns out I missed the final five seconds of the trailer last night. The part where he's doing the foot race is really funny, it's kind of a take off on Kim Jong Il and his six holes in one, ETC

I never really cared for the BORAT CULTURAL LEARNINGS OF AMERICA FOR MAKE BENEFIT GLORIOUS NATION OF KAZAKHSTAN or BRUNO trailers, for what it's worth

The trailers for both of those movies elicited several laughs from me. This one... zero. frown.gif

I'll be honest, I've been an SBC fan since the late night channel 4 stuff, so I will watch this. If it has got at least as much stupid but funny content as Ali G Indahouse then I'll be happy. I like that despite the way his career is going, he's not completely given up on these kinds of characters.

And the "WTF" scene is funnier if you watch Kingsley the whole time. He looks like he needs to take a shit or something.

I guess for me I am just disappointed because I remember this project started life as another BORAT style reality film - and I think it could have been really funny if done in that style. Then they were saying he was creating a different reality character centered around a european singing contest. It seems now though he can only work within fictional worlds because presumably everyone now knows who he is

I'm surprised he even attempted another one.  I remember reading that they had a really hard time getting enough footage for Bruno because everyone was recognizing him.  Hell, I'm pretty sure he stated in interviews around the time that he probably wouldn't bother attempting it again.

It's a shame.. I wish he would have stayed small scale with TV based projects and flown under the radar. BORAT the movie is fun, but not half as good as some of Borat's best stuff on DA ALI G SHOW. I feel like it wasn't a worthwhile trade to get a 2 hr Borat's movie if now it means there will be no more reality humor from SBC

I laughed at the foot race gag.  Yes, I AM a horrible, horrible human being.  I'm okay with it though.

Nevermind shooting those runners, he should have shot his fucking writers.

Is the Freddie Mercury biopic starring Cohen still on? Now this question may be derailing the tread, but why talk about a movie we're not going to see?

Last I read, the script is still being worked on and it is on the backburner for the moment.  Also, I believe the current title for it is A Kind of Magic.  It's supposed to cover the band's career from its inception through Live Aid.

It was originally supposed to film in early 2012, but since that isn't happening Cohen signed onto Django Unchained and Les Miserables.  A great way to pass the time, I must say.  Anyway, it is a passion project for him, so I doubt he'll give up on it.

Thanks for the info.

Definate Sandler vibe from the trailer, which is a real shame.

Finally caught this trailer. I love BORAT to pieces, but this looks to be his LOVE GURU/ZOHAN.

I'm feeling increasingly like I'm in the minority on this one now.  I still haven't liked what I've seen in any of the subsequent trailers and TV spots, but most seem to be coming around on the film.  It's good to know I'm not alone.

From the last trailer I've seen, I can tell that movie is going to be about Cohen's character finding love and learning the error of his ways. I'll pass.

He finds love, kind of. But not the other. Its pretty good about that stuff. For example, the villain's nefarious plot is to bring democracy to his country.
