SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS Post-release thread..... - Page 2

Agreed with those who say they should bring Harris back. As much as I liked Mark Strong in the first, his character pales in comparison to Moriarty as played by Harris. That guy knows how to portray both intelligence and cruelty without even speaking, and was definitely my main reason for watching this. Though the movie had some flaws, the final match of wits between our hero and his nemesis was brilliant (especially the way they inverted the "Sherlock Vision" by having Moriarty interrupting him). I wish more of the movie had been as powerful as that finale.

If (big if) there's another one, I'm betting Harris returns as a surprise in the third act.

Unless I'm reading things wrong (and I'm not the best with maths), the movie has turned a profit hasn't it? So there's a good chance for a third one.

Am I incorrect?

I think the third will happen, going by what all the principals have said. Downey freaking LOVES making these movies, for some reason.

Doesn't surprise me, because no matter what you think of the end product, it looks like he's having fun, oh and there's this...$$$$$$!!!

I just don't want another Blackwood. God, what a lame villain. Not for Mark Strong's lack of trying.

Same here, Blackwood really dragged the first film down for me. And Holmes was injured and still survived, so Moriarty could easily have too.

Mark Strong is like the test of the writing. If a guy that good can't elevate it you know it's waaaaaay undercooked.

Film was very much in line with the first. A solid timewaster. Nothing special....except for one thing;

Jared Harris as Moriarty. A remarkably chilling and effective performance, in what was essentially a campy lark (with both Law and Downey jr hamming it up to the max).

Harris stole the show, and taking account the other things I've seen him in (Mad Men, Benjamin Button, Fringe, Betty Page, I Shot Andy Warhol), he's got to rank up there with the finest and most versatile British character actors working right now. Spielberg cast Harris as Ulysses S. Grant opposite Daniel Day Lewis' Abraham Lincoln, and you can see why. Harris may never get the same type of glory, but he's got the talent and presence to stand toe to toe with an all-time great like DDL.

It's a shame his equally gifted father Richard Harris never lived to see Jared really start hitting his stride and earning recognition (probably starting from his brilliant work on Mad Men). I think Jared will be an Oscar nominee/winner one day if this rich vein of performances continues. Hope his role in Lincoln is big enough to maybe gain spporting actor recognition.

At least Richard Harris had the chance to see him in... LOST IN SPACE...

Wow. Crazy to think that Harris AND Gary Oldman (on current form, both probably the strongest British characters actors of their age range of about 50-55) were both in this turd. Of course Oldman's rep was firmly established then, and Harris was still percieved as a jobbing journeyman actor. Great to see how far he's come. Just shows that if a talented performer gets good roles to strut their stuff, their quality will shine through.

Man, I bet it's Matt LeBlanc's turn for his movie career to blow up.

Are you sure that's not his audition for Italian Spiderman?

The production budget was supposedly $125 million.  It's hit almost $180 million domestically and is sitting at a worldwide total of $440 million.  Sherlock Holmes 3 is guaran-fucking-teed at this point.  It won't hit the almost $210 million that the first one did, but the trilogy will be seen through to the end regardless.  I suspect Ritchie will only produce next time 'round though.

Well, that makes sense, and I can't say I'm unhappy about it. Seems like a fine thing for all these guys to spend their time on. The world needs entertaining piffle. Granted, I don't think the world was lacking for it, but I like these more than Transformers or whatever.
