Its Official...Buffy has been Cancelled!

I just pulled this off E! I knew that the 7th season would be the last one, but it still kinda sucks to hear an "official" word.

Buffy" Laid to Rest

Feb 27, 2003, 11:45 AM PT

The demons of Sunnydale won't have Buffy the Vampire Slayer to kick around anymore.

UPN has officially announced the cancelation of the series, as star Sarah Michelle Gellar leaves to concentrate on her big-screen career.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Gellar was close to signing on to the feature film Romantic Comedy. Production on the lovestruck spoof starts in August, ostensibly when Buffy would start filming on its eighth season. The casting news put a stake through Gellar's return to the UPN series.

Then word leaked of Gellar's come-clean interview in Entertainment Weekly's March 7 issue. "Buffy, in this incarnation, is over," said the actress, whose contract expires at the end of this season.

Finally on Thursday, 20th Century Fox Television and UPN confirmed what insiders already knew, production on the series would end this April after seven seasons and 144 shows.

The series finale will air May 20. While Eliza Dushku and Alyson Hannigan are both making crossover appearance on Angel and Buffy, this season there's no word if the titular lovers separated by destiny, several hundred years and network rivalry will finally reunite for the last episode.

"It's hard to believe it's over," said creator Joss Whedon in a written statement released through UPN Thursday. "Well, it's hard to think at all, or stand, or form vowel sounds, so maybe it's time to take a break. I'm just glad I can say we did our best on every single episode. We didn't always succeed, but we never slacked, and I'm immensely proud of my writers, actors and crew for that.

"And I'm proud of what this show means...I truly believe that in years to come, people will look back and say 'that was a show that was on TV.' Yessir. I truly do," said Whedon, who received an Emmy nomination for the creepy classic episode "Hush."

The eulogies were echoed by execs at 20th Century Fox and UPN. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer will go down in history as one of television's best shows and an enduring testament to the vision and genius of its creator Joss Whedon," said 20th Century Fox Television prez Dana Walden. "For seven years, Joss, his team of writers led by Marti Noxon and an extraordinary cast led by Sarah Michelle Gellar captured the cultural zeitgeist and effortlessly combined drama, action and humor. Without question, Buffy will live on for generations to come."

"We have been very fortunate to be the home to such a landmark series, always brilliantly written and acted," chimed in Dawn Ostroff, UPN's entertainment boss. "I'd like to send a special thanks to the remarkably talented actors, producers, writers and crew who worked tirelessly through the years."

Gellar won the role of the Chosen One back in 1997 when Buffy the Vampire Slayer was nothing more than a punchline, based on the box-office bomb starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry (how bummed are they not to have signed on for the series?).

Prior to Buffy, Gellar was best known for her sudsy role as Kendall Hart, daughter of scheming Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) on All My Children, for which she won a Daytime Emmy.

Despite its dedicated fan base, Buffy would never win the thespian an Emmy (or even a nomination, though she was nominated for a Best Actress Golden Globe), but during her seven-season tenure Gellar managed to add multiple credits to her résumé. While pulling double duty as wisecracking schoolgirl and vampire slayer, Gellar also moonlighted during her hiatus in movies like Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Cruel Intentions, Simply Irresistible and Scooby-Doo.

Gellar's break-neck schedule won't slow down, with the actress slated to begin production on Scooby-Doo Too with husband Freddie Prinze Jr. as soon as Buffy wraps. Warner Bros. is eyeing a summer 2004 release for the sequel with a script already in the works for the third installment of the franchise.

Rumors of Gellar's departure began lurking on the Internet last summer, when news that Buffy's sister Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg) would have a larger role in the seventh season, prompting speculation that the demon-battling heroine would pass the stake on to her little sis.

Most recently, Dushku's name was put forward as a possible slayer sub for a potential spinoff series. Dushku joined the Scooby Gang in the third season as rogue Slayer Faith, but an alliance with the dark side put an end to her time in Sunnydale.

Ultimately, the Hellmouth could go unprotected since a rep for the actress just confirmed she's inked a pilot deal with Fox for an untitled project from writer John Feldman, which would see Dushku as a morgue employee who talks to the dead instead of staking them. The corpses tell Dushku's character how they were murdered and every morning she relives the same day, hoping to set things right.

In addition, Buffy's executive producer Noxon has already been tapped for a new one-hour drama next season, leaving the fate of Sunnydale uncertain.

Still producers maintain the possibility that the slayer mythology lives on. According to the statement from 20th Century Fox and UPN: "Discussions regarding the future of the Buffy franchise and a possible spinoff are ongoing."

Well some of us are diehard fans of that show. The worst thing that happened to it was naming it after some horrible movie of the same name.

In reality, that show has more wit and depth than any other show Ive seen (save for its spinoff Angel). The writing on Buffy is hands down some of the best writing Iv ever seen, movies included. The acting is superb, the stories and characters rich and dynamic and the action is through the roof.

Dont knock Buffy. Its an outstanding show.

However, as a fan who has seen every episode (and has ALL of them on tape or DVD)I must admit that Angel is the superior show. But thats another topic altogether.
I knock it with gusto! I can't see how it lasted this long!

Wow look at me dissing a show so I can piss people off.

Next time try watching it first before you make your idiotic comments.

Well Gruber, if youd actually watched the show, you may feel differently. And I dont mean a single episode...or even a few of them. Id be willing to bet if you had watched a full season of that show, you wouldnt be praising its cancellation.

Now, if you HONESTLY watched a full story arc of that show (which is about half a season) and you HONESTLY did not like it, then I stand corrected.

But you will forgive me for being so defensive of the show, because so many people claim they dont like the show....even though theyve never seen it. The ignorance of some people when it comes to that show is amazing.
You don't need to see a full fucking season of a show to get it's drift. I saw more than enough, and it wasn't my cup of tea, to use that hackneyed phrase.

Thanks Gruber...you just backed up my point. You could not possibly catch the drift of Buffy because the show HAS NO drift.

Every ep of every season has been full of plot twists, character changes, character deaths, etc, etc., etc.

Its something different every time, no two eps are alike.

Im not knocking you personally, its just Ive had this same conversation with people for the past 6 and a half years.

Buffy is a love/hate thing. The problem is 90% of the people in the hate category are the ones who never gave the show a chance...or claim they watched enough eps to "get it" but they never really paid attention...and those people probably cant even name a single character on the show save for the title name.
No, I gave the show a chance, and I don't like the shows basic idea. I have no desire to see pretty teenagers wander and slay vampires, and other monstrosities.
Im sorry you sound like my mom before she actually watched and payed attention to the show. By the way they arn't teenagers anymore....they umm have passed that age what about three or four years ago
post #12 of 40
forgot to add that im slightly glad this is the last season. The show needs to end when people still like it

Agree with Ornth. And Gruber....all the main characters are 22 or 23 years old. (Except Dawn whos about 17, Robin is 30, Giles is in his mid 40s and Spike is 129)

I can't say I ever got into Buffy either, I tried it a couple of time, but it never tickled my jibblies. I assume I'll probably like it during syndication and promptly pick up the DVD's soon there after, but in the mean time the cancellation mean nothing to me but open air for something different.
I suppose it is better for it to end now. Its just that is the only show I watch, without it what will I do for an hour everyday? Reruns get boring once youve seen them all 5 times
post #16 of 40
I've never been able to get through a whole episode.
Ah, the Buffster taking a bow. Well, she had a good run and, unlike the "X-Files", I enjoyed every season Joss Whedon and the gang had to give.

Yes, it is better now to back out than to wring the idea dry of all its creativity. Soon, oh yes, soon all the seasons will be made available for our viewing pleasure. Can't wait.
I know the show's called "Buffy" and all, but does anyone else feel like the show really belonged to the other members of the Scooby gang? I like the story surrounding the Buffy character, but I never thought Geller was the one who made the show special. Believe me, I'll continue to buy every season set and be glad for it, but I'd watch a show about the further adventures of Giles, Willow, Xander and Spike with just as much enthusiasm as I watch this one. I may even start buying Angel, even though I've never seen one episode.
I watched it... well, tried a couple of times at least. It was horrid to me. And I thought the movie, and especially Kristy Swanson, were FAR better than this tripe. So sorry if I have to say i am also amazed it went this long.

Then again, people watch Smallville too......

Now I will point one thing out. In the poll for the most popular sci-fi characters of all time, Buffy did have more characters than ANY other show. Both farscape and Star Wars were tied at 2 each, and Buffy had 4. but it seems you like one end of the spectrum and hate the other. I know almost no-one that watched both Buffy and Farscape.

Yet, 4 of the top 5 spots were Buffy and Farscape (behind the #1 Doctor Who) and now BOTh series are ending somewhat pre-maturely. Who makes these dumb marketing decisions anyway?

Totally agree with i3ullseye and The Man Called Gruber.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

In fairness, they named it after the movie, and took character names, locations and even the same "gifted" writer...

It was the years-later TV version of the film. Not a coincidence. Take it in slowly, man...

I dig the movie.

That and the movie was better.

That would be the SFX magazine poll? Considering the mag interviews Joss Whedon every month, and usually a couple of Buffy or Angel cast members as well, it's hardly surprising.

In response to Serfico...

They took the title characters name, and that was it. Every character on the show was newly introduced in the first season. NOBODY from the movie, save Buffy herself was in the tv show. She was the only character that transferred over.

Secondly, the locations were not the same. The movie took place in Los Angeles. The TV show takes place in Sunnydale, a fictional town.

Joss Whedon however did write the movie, and become the EP and creator of the show.

Besides Surifco...my whole point was that it was a really ballsy move naming a nationally-aired TV show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".

With a name like that, who would take it seriously? Much less....of the general audience who would have the intelligence needed to understand that the show is an adult drama and not some teeny-bopper comedy.
Dude,

Buffy is a story of a blonde-haired, high school chick who was endowed with special abilities so she could drive stake's into the heart of vampires. She was called a "Slayer", special role passed down through various females over time to help keep the vampire number in check.

She is supervised by an older male observer whose position is to train and pass down the legacy of each slayer.

The story is written by Joss Whedon.

Now, am I talking about the movie or the show?
Phantom,

For what it's worth, I know there are obviously many others that share your enthusiasm for the show, and are sad to see it cancelled.

I am sorry it has ended, and glad you got so much out of it. No shit.

Hey thanks. I wasnt trying to shitcan any of the points you made, I was just trying to clarify some stuff regarding the show.

In all honesty, Ive enjoyed each of the 6 1/2 seasons of Buffy and I look forward to the climax of this season. I will be sad to see it go, but Im glad its going out while its still good.

HOWEVER...

I WILL BE REALLY PISSED when Angel goes off the air. I know there will be at least one more season of that show, maybe 2. But Angel has proven to be much more superior than Buffy in every sense of the word. When that show goes, I will be pissed.

It would have been safer for Joss to have named the series 'Tearstains in Hell: A Dramatic A-Brechtian Study of American Adolescence and The Harrowing Onset of Van Helsing Syndrome'...

That would have put enough distance between it and the successful box-office smash...

Not to play devils advocate here, but Buffy was hardly a Box Office smash. It made about 4.5 million, which was good for the time (1992), but it diddnt even make the top 50 for that year.

Just think, what will all you wet blankets have to bitch about anymore?
i was watching the movie earlier today and i can now safely say that the series is at least 20 times better. the movie just isn't very funny, there are no real plot twists and turns, the characters are all jack asses and the vampires aren't scary. give me the show anyday over that mess.

and i also think Buffy is the weakest part of the show. Spike and Giles are probably my favorites, with Xander and Anya up there too. i'll be sad to see the story end, but i'll always have the dvd's to entertain me.
i3ullseye, I watch both Farscape and Buffy. I'm just freaky like that.

I actually just got into both shows recently. Buffy, because.. I watch M*A*S*H (Oh God I am a freak!) every morning, and once I happened to turn over to FX an hour early, and.. There was Buffy. So I watched it.

I'm not a huge fan, by any means. Half the time, I don't have any idea what's even going on, since I haven't seen any of the earlier episodes.. But it's still enjoyable. To me, at least. And I'm not so into it that I'm emotionally crushed by this news. Like people said, it's good that it's ending now, rather than it being overdone. ..And there's always reruns.

I still wanna see "Hush", dammit.

"Just think, what will all you wet blankets have to bitch about anymore?"

With movies like Resident Evil, Fear Dot Com and sequalizing of Jeepers Creepers you think we are lacking lame crap to pan?
Oh don't worry about us, there's always something to tear down. If it's not Buffy, it'll be the Texas Chainsaw remake or the new Dark Castle flick.

You guys should be more worried about where you're going to get your jollies once Buffy ends. Sitting around in your jammies, swapping makeup tips, popping bon-bons... But alas, nothing to watch on tv.

Yeah because god forbid us ever disliking something...
