The Scores of John Carpenter

Yeah, this should probably be in the music forum. So what?

Anyway, I was rumaging thru the PSX Blow-Out Bin at my local Game Stop used video game store when I stumbled across The Sentinel Returns.

Which for some reason has a score done by...yep...John Carpenter.

So I fork over the $6.99 for it and take it home only to discover that it sucks.

The game, not the music.

So on a whim I load the thing up in my CD player - why, I don't know - and low and behold the damn thing played like a normal CD.

Meaning I just scored myself the rarest Carpenter score of all time.

Sort of a cross between Escape From L.A. and The Fog only with the synths much more obvious.

And it got me thinkin'.

For a man known the world over as the master behind all but 2 of his movie's scores, which one is the coolest?

Golden Age - The Fog
Silver Age - They Live
Modern Age - Vampires

And while I hate the movie, I will be buying the score to Ghosts of Mars on the 16th...

Halloween.

I've always found Carpenter's scores remarkably addictive. This is suprising, generally they are only a repetition of at most seven notes!

I've always liked the Assault on Precinct 13 ditty the best (not too sure if it was one of his, I'm too drunk to check IMDB to be sure, but it has his hallmarks!), Halloween is a close second, followed by The Thing and Escape from New York (DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE!).

Ghost of Mars has yet to get over here, I'm probably going to spend my cash on it but I really feel that Carpenter DESERVES a resurgence of some description...

Part of Carpenter's genius is his ability to pick good, unusual people to collaborate with creatively; that's why the score to GOM kicked so much ass because the grand-master of the technical guitar solo, BUCKETHEAD, plays with Mr. Chance. Buckethead also worked on the Mortal Kombat sequel and Last Action Hero. Film scores are exemplary (and his concept albums are visionary masterpieces, redefining the current state of guitar rock). Basically, the mofo can shred an axe. Also cool because John Carpenter is an obvious influence on Buckethead's work; he has a few songs that sound just like JC stuff. Small world.

For the last time:

Carpenter didn't compose The Thing, Ennio Morricone did...

Regards to the score of THE THING...Morricone did indeed compose the score for the film, all the really great orchestral stuff...but anything electronic...including the main "pulse: theme...that was Carpenter. Hence, Morricone's anger with the guy.
