Beautiful little movie, love Don Bluth's work. New York City feels so lived in, so much personality. All the characters are great, although Fievel himself doesn't have much of an arc. Everything always happens to him, but he's brave from the start. There could've been a lesson about him learning to obey his parents, but in fact he's rewarded at the end (and does it again in the sequel!)
Great songs, so catchy! "No Cats in America" and "Somewhere out there" are classics, as praiseworthy as anything Disney put out at the time. Only real complaint is Dom DeLuise's Tiger comes in far too late into the movie, in like the last twenty minutes, and his sudden friendship with Fievel and nice-guy-cat shtick didn't quite gel. Tony the mouse and Tiger's character could've been combined, but both feel underdeveloped as a result.
Survives the nostalgia test, but the sequel does not.
