TODAY’S MAJOR TRAILER #1: DARK KNIGHT RISES

Lots of teasers rolling out today, let's start with the big one.

Looks good, they showed a decent amount, but never will they show enough.

A little intrigued by Anne Hathaway in this. Is Liam Neeson coming back?

If the rumors are to be believed, for a cameo in a flashback. Josh Pence is already confirmed to be playing a young Ra's Al Ghul in a flashback, so it's safe to assume that Neeson will be used to further stitch up the narrative and sell the idea that he has some connection to what's going down*.

*At this point I think most of us know what that connection is likely to be, but how it's sold and what the details are is anyone's guess. But please, dear God, I am begging you, no one mention the Lazarus Pit. Pleeeeaase.

I got the impression that Catwoman is working with Bane or is part of The League of Shadows from the Trailer.

A little titbit. I read the novelization for BATMAN BEGINS and they had these Raa's Journal entries in which Talia and the Lazarus Pits were mentioned. But thats just the book. It probably won't be reflected in the movies.

If she's involved with Bane or the LOS, or whatever, it's probably in the same, unofficial capacity as The Scarecrow previously was. Either that, or she has her own completely separate arc that eventually intersects with what Bruce is dealing with.

Or simply that the same high level of corruption that causes Bane to attack Gotham is the very thing that motivates Kyle to start stealing from the rich.

Maybe. Although to me it sounds more like something a thrillseeking thief from a lower class background would whisper into the ear of the rich playboy whose safe she's cracked just minutes earlier - being part of the criminal element Wayne no longer fights on a nightly basis, maybe she's heard a few rumours about the League that he isn't aware of. So when Bane's stadium-collapsing shenanigans put her cryptic remarks into context and forces him to put on the cape and cowl again, he might consider her as a source of information, and later, an unlikely ally.

Since I'm from Pittsburgh, I was glad to see Hines Ward in the trailer. Its Monday night football, and I'm down with my inner yinzer. That sentence will make sense if your from Pittsburgh.

Small detail that made me smile: listening to this with headphones, you can hear the faint stirrings of what sounds like The Joker's siren-style theme music kick in as Selina is talking to Bruce.

Boy, filmmakers really love having Selina Kyle show up at masked balls, huh?

Pussy and balls are the perfect pairing. (I'm sorry)

Jesus.

Looks like a generic, albeit expensive, action movie. I'll see it, of course, but Bane just doesn't bring the excitement that The Joker does. I'm expecting it to be better than Batman Begins but not as good as The Dark Knight.

Generic?

Looks good, and damn they picked a hell of a line for Bane. Pretty much sums up the character.

Yes, "generic", because Nolan is soo intent on making these "realistic" (although his idea of realism includes an earthquake machine apparently) not to mention his fixation on Bond style action, that these no longer resemble "Batman" movies. If you got rid of the masks this could have been produced by Luc Besson and Wally Pfister's cinematography is still as bland as fuck. Then there's Hathaway who still acts and sounds like a teenage girl, one with a great set of tits admittedly, while Bane looks like a Gimp.

Your insight depends on hyperbole over articulation. It is null and void.

"With Gossamer's ... asses ... you're mad the misted eye."

Douchebags in popped collars. This looks bad.

Best curse ever.

It doesn't have the 'unf' that the Dark Knight had, but I do believe my faith has been earned. Also, much more down with Hathaway as Kyle now that I've seen her in the 'world'. Also, Batplane?

Looked to me like there was a parking garage or something below that football field, and they were blowing up the supporting pillars...

I dunno, I listened with my V-MODA CROSSFADE LP headphones, and he's easy enough to understand. I suspect many who complain of unintelligible dialog listened to the trailer using wonky computer speakers. I think once you're hearing the dialog over a theatrical sound system, you should be fine

This trailer was fairly good, though certain moments were to me extremely questionable (the football stuff in particular felt like unintentional comedy). I'm sure I'll enjoy this, and I hope Nolan knocked it out of the park, but the marketing materials for this so far have not wowed me. To be fair TDK had some of my favorite posters of the past 10 years (in terms of posters that were actually used in public spaces, rather than online only designs),  but still, the posters for TDKR all remind me of the art from the RAMBO film of a few years ago. It's not a bad art style, but it just feels out of place with what's come before

This trailer seems cool enough, but I'm just not getting a terribly Batmany vibe from it

I don't have any problem understanding Bane either... "When Gotham is ashes, you have my permission to die."

Also, was that Matthew Modine?!

The football sequence is clearly meant to have a bit of dark humor to it. That's not an invitation to a debate, as Ray Charles could see that was the intention, and he's both blind and dead.

What would make it more Batmanny? The Batusi? I would pay to see that, he is in a ballroom at some point.

My general rule of thumb is that movies that prominently feature sporting stadiums that aren't actually about sports suck. Perhaps I am overlooking an obvious example here. But in my book, stadiums are like helicopters: the more of them you have in a movie trailer, the dumber the plot will be.

I guess the music just made it seem as if it were being played with a straight face, as if we were watching some sort of tragic football horror

And it could be darker. All that daylight footage just doesn't seem like BATMAN to me. I'm sure the movie will be fine, but the lack of night time shots did irk me

You must hate The Last Boy Scout then.

Part of what Nolan is doing in this film is bringing Batman out into the daylight. I'm sure it serves a thematic purpose, but it also makes sense in that if Batman is going to be effective, he can't always pick and choose when he wants to go out and do battle. Bad guys aren't on his clock.

I think you're spot on with this (it serving a thematic purpose). The Joker also already picked up on Batman's preference to work in darkness (he called the mob bosses out for meeting during daylight hours because of their fear of Batman); it's not a stretch to think someone as calculating as Bane would seek to exploit that preference and force Batman to come out in the open during daylight.

Oh yeah, I was just playing. I've played in rock bands and worked construction for years so my ears are pretty hammered but with headphones I could make out his words just fine.

It's an effective trailer.  Beyond that we will have to see.

Sorry no hyperbole ether way here.

That "When Gotham is in ashes. You have my permission to die." line was what really sold Bane to me as a villian.

A very strong, big guy with a ruthless edge,

I thought it was "When Gotham is.. ashes, you have my permission to die"

Either way it was a great line, chillingly delivered and the look of terror and awe on Bale's bloodied face is what really sold it

Trailer looks interesting ...

I understand what Bane says, what I don't understand is what Bruce says and that guy replies to in the prison.

Bruce: What does it mean?

Old man: Rise.

Bane: Master criminal. Bat-breaker. Can quote the fuck out of Led Zeppelin.

That's definitely the vibe I'm getting.

Batman prefers the darkness because he looks goofy as shit in broad daylight.

Caine makes that trailer and breaks my heart just a little bit. Surprised he's not been mentioned yet. His Alfred is side by side with Oldmans Gordon as the emotional hearts of these films.

Sudden Death is an entertaining Die Hard rip-off, but not a great film.  The Last Boy Scout, on the other hand, is WELL worth your time..............especially if you are a fan of Bruce Willis and/or Shane Black.

For those concerned about Batman in the daylight, it's a deliberate thing by Nolan. He basically says how ridiculous Batman looks during the day and wants to bring him out of his element. It's been on his mind even during The Dark Knight. Here be proof:

There's also a film called MS ONE starring Guy Pierce that you might want to check out next year. It's pretty much "The Last Boy Scout in Space".
