Warren Ellis: Captured Ghosts

So the comic shop I go to hosted a screening of this (kind of a low turnout for the only screening on the Gulf South).

Really, this is must see if you are a fan of Ellis or of writing in general. Just a really good look at Ellis and how he has developed over the years. Only disappointing thing is there is so much to get into with Ellis, that the documentary could really use a sequel, especially with Ellis stepping away from comics.

A review.

Also, this doc is filled with great one liners.

I'll definiately pick up the DVD. Where is Ellis heading off to? He's talked about doing TV for ever and I know there's plans afoot to do another attempt at a Global Frequency show.

As for a sequel, well I'd buy a whole two hours of Ellis talking about Planetary

He's got a two novel deal, and his Marvel work for hire exclusivity deal is up, so he's taking a break from mainstream comics to work on his novels and the Gravel screenplay and other things.

He doesn't seem very happy with the current state of mainstream comics.

The documentary is pretty great.

On Planetary, there is a great interview on YouTube with Ellis where he states he doesn't like talking about Planetary because of all the personal stuff it is attached too - his dad dying and his getting very, very sick.

Cool, maybe we'll see the return of Fell at some point.

Is Freakangels worth bothering with?

It's free, so there's no excuse not to find out.

You might as well not hold your breath for any new comics from Ellis for awhile. He has said there are new Fell scripts, but it sounds like for the most part he is done with the medium for awhile.

But what about Anna Mercury 2? I've been waiting patiently for nearly two years for the final two issues.

As of July, his work FAQ said Anna Mercury 2 completion should be released in January (given Avatar's weird publishing schedule, probably March or later I'd think), Doktor Sleepless conclusion in early 2012, he's writing more Fell but Templesmith draws it on his own schedule and had family stuff in the past year that took priority over work.

That's cool. Ellis is my favorite writer in the medium, and I've been loving his Avatar work. Hearing that he's stepping away from comics breaks my heart.

Ellis today on twitter:

Absent a seizure, SECRET AVENGERS 21 out today sees me saying goodbye to new comics for a little while. Hope people enjoyed those 6 issues.

So he decided to sign off with a big "fuck you" to Captain America, Marvel comics, and anyone who, y'know, doesn't think torture is awesome?

A friend who knows my unholy love of Ellis told me to pick up his run on Secret Avengers. Holy shit. Read the first three this weekend. It is like Planetary combined with spy-fi and Marvel superheroes. The best part? I could just hop in on his first issue. No needing to read a ton of complicated back story. Just off you go, into the story head first.
