Bilbo's butt!

Wow.. that is just terrible!

I'm honestly taken aback. I hope it's not a signal that the HOBBIT is going to be crammed full of Jackson's annoying 'fisheye lens'/stuttery frame rate gimmicks

Why on earth is this poster orientated this way?

It's painful, because otherwise despite some overly gaudy lighting and over saturated colors, it could be an OK poster image

This is a story that needs class and dignity, and this poster screams "Bilbo just took some magic mushrooms!"

Kate, serious question, have you read the book?

Yes. They read it aloud to us in 5th grade. I also watched the cartoon version several times on Cartoon Networks' Saturday night Cartoon Theater back in the day

Okay, good. Just wondering. Personally, I love the purity of The Hobbit, and very excited, but wish it didn't smell so strongly of LOTR as I really don't like those books or films at all.

Dickhead dragon who loves treasure? Brilliant. Love the wit of the book, really hoping that comes through.

Yes it's that very narrative purity that made me think Del Torro would be a better fit for this semi stand alone adventure. I'm not particularly keen to have everything turned up to 11, Jackson style, with HOBBIT being divided across two films

I very much preferred ONE Hobbit film, as a stand alone children's story, and then one bridge film based on whatever story threads remained

Oh well

It's ok.. Nothing I'll ever buy and hang up on my wall.  Then again, all the Lord of the Rings posters had an "over worked" feel to them.

Except for this one..

Yes, that's a classy poster and all, but surely it would be even better if the entire image was cocked at a 45 degree angle for some reason, right?

If Dutch angles bug you that much Kate, I'm just going to recommend that you never, ever watch The Third Man.  It may very well kill you.

It just makes no sense for this film or for the tone of the poster

Except that it does make sense.  Canted frames are often used to signify discomfort or uneasiness, and here we see Bilbo literally leaving his comfort zone of Bag End for the first time.  It's not the greatest poster ever, but it works thematically.

Well OK, different strokes I guess. Look, I'm a big fan of posters that are done well. I started the BEST OF MOVIE POSTERS thread on GUY.COM and filled it will all sorts of great posters, including posters for films I don't really care for. However, on this one, I just really don't like the image

What can I say

"Come on, Sam. Remember what Bilbo used to say: 'It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.'"

That poster makes perfect sense.

Richard Dickson you can argue the logic of the image on  the poster all you want, but all I am saying is that as art I find it off putting and it doesn't signal to me the tone I feel the film should convey, and it doesn't give me the warm fuzzies for going back to middle earth

Maybe a charming, illustrated and handsomely detailed version of that same image would have worked

Maybe it would have worked if the angle of the tilt was less severe

Instead my reaction to the poster is entirely about the over bright colors and the crazy off kilter perspective. It might work for you but for me it does not. That is all I can say

Maybe it works as an image for the film that was actually made, not the one apparentlly going on inside your head.

That is exactly my fear, that this poster signals a film full of Jackson's hokey camera techniques. I hope it is just the tone of this poster that is off, rather than the entire film. Oh well. It doesn't make me a grinch to be down on Peter Jackson in the year 2011. He has had a checkered history, to be honest even though I enjoy many of the individual moments, I don't even really like RETURN OF THE KING as a film.  The pacing of the Sam and Frodo stuff is tortorous, and the movie becomes a big slog

I have no reason to suspect Jackson is right for a charming, small scale childrens film

I like it.  Bilbo's about to go on an adventure, and I'm going with him!  Yep.
