DVD/VCR question

My old DVD/VCR started destroying my VHS tapes, which I'm using to record tv programs.  I need a new DVD/VCR player that I can use to record.  I picked up a Toshiba tonight but it didn't have the In/Out plugs(No idea what they are called) so I can't record.  Can anyone help me out?  If I have to I'll move on to a DVD recorder but I think I'll have the same problem.

For those who don't want to invest in a dvr, I can see how VHS would make sense. I never had a dvr and was still vhsing some programs up until a few years ago

Your only option is to get a DVD/VCR combo.
